It's the latter I'm sure. Sincerely, Noah Eaton Actually I lean towards Stay American, baby. Even moreso after seeing the video.

I think "stay american, baby" makes more sense. It's just that the title is "American Baby" and that kind of throws it off.

Yes, I think the message is not to lose faith in our country even if we lose faith in the administration. We all know DMB is anti-Bush and was part of the Pro-Kerry musical movement. I think this song (and video) is just to remind us that even though the current political situation is kind of depressing, when it comes down to it we still live in a great country and being American is still a great thing. Even more interesting is the fact that the members of DMB are not American-born, but South African and can attest to the fact that when all is said and done, America is still a welcoming country with a lot to offer.

Exactly.
The lyrics are so much more profound if he's saying "Stay American". It's like a plea for this country not to lose sight of what made us great in the first place.

Actually, only Dave is South African. He was born and only partly raised there. He moved here at age 18 to avoid mandatory service in the S.African army during Apartheid. The rest of the band are all American-born.

I'm not a big fan of the Dave Matthews Band, but I LOVE this song! I hope it goes to #1.

This could miss the Top 10. In 2 more weeks when the hype of the album comes out, this will definitly get another boost.

It looks like DMB could become another artist to score an all-time Hot 100 peak with their latest single due to the inclusion of digital downloads.
