The first single from DMB's much anticiapted upcoming album. This will be perfect for HAC this Spring and Summer.
I expect it to be #1 at AAA a month from now.

This will definitely explode onto Triple A like brushfire like U2 and R.E.M lead singles often do.
This could possibly go #1 between two to three weeks after the first day of release, depending on when Jack Johnson's next single will be pushed, which if not immediately soon may help Jack Johnson enjoy a lengthy run on top.
Hot AC is more questionable. I think it is definitely a catchy single. Then again, we saw "Grey Street" flop hard after the success of "Where Are You Going" from their previous record, a single we all figured would be another strong follow-up.
But I'll say "American Baby" will go Top 10 at Hot AC. I don't think it'll peak as high as "The Space Between" or "Where Are You Going", but still should have a good run.
My Predictions:
Triple A: #1 Hot AC: #6
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

They played it on my Hot AC station today with a little promo for it from the DJ. I didn't really get a chance to listen to it really closely though. The DJ took some calls from people after he played it and one caller called the song "a sell out". Woah! I didn't hear the other callers' opinions unfortunately.

From Rolling Stone:
"American Baby" opens with sounds of bombs dropping, but Matthews says it is meant to be optimistic: "There is a divide in this country. That song is hoping that apple pie and lemonade, baseball and sunny-day barbecues are not going to be replaced by a 'fuck 'em all and let God sort it out' vibe . . . This album is about love, life, God, death and sex."
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I honestly don't know what to think of this. It's a good song, but I just feel Dave and the boys have strayed way too far from their roots. This is probably the poppiest thing they've ever done - not that they haven't done poppy songs before, but it seems like they've never done anything so melodic and structured.
Like I said, it's not a bad song at all, but it just doesn't feel like the same band that did "What Would You Say" et. al.

I've heard this song a few times now. I like it. Doesn't really sound like DMB to me which is fine by me since I've only previously liked a few songs by them. I wonder what their diehard fan base thinks of it.

I've liked a couple of their singles and album tracks before, but the beat of this song sounds a lot different and interesting with Dave's voice. I like it a lot.

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND American Baby Producer(s): Mark Batson Writer(s): D. Matthews, B. Tinsley, Publisher(s): Colden Grey (ASCAP); Tinco Publishing (ASCAP); Bat Future Music Genre: ROCK Label/Catalog Number: RCA 82876 69100 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: April 23, 2005
"American Baby" made its debut last month via AOL Music's First Listen initiative. Since then, it has become a hit at adult top 40 radio. Now it's time for the catchy jam to cross over to other formats. While it doesn't necessarily break new musical ground, "American Baby" does showcase a group that is very aware of the here and now. "Nobody's laughing now/God's grace lost/And the devil is proud," Matthews sings in the second verse. Of course, such potent lyrics will mean different things to different people. Some will hear a love song, while others will hear a politically charged pop-rock tune. The choice is yours. Either way, "American Baby" is paving the way for a strong debut for the band's new album, "Stand Up," which arrives May 10.—MP

I'm trying to figure out whether the lyrics are "Stay American, baby" or "Stay, American baby".
What a difference a comma makes.

It's the latter I'm sure. Sincerely, Noah Eaton I didn't even think it was anything other than "Stay, American baby." I was 100% sure of it. However, now that I've watched the video I'm thinking maybe it is "Stay American, baby" afterall.
