This will be the first single from their forthcoming untitled studio album due October 5th.
This politically charged studio album is their first studio release in three years. Up until the album's release before the November election (Stipe said he "wouldn't have it any other way" in releasing the album before November 2nd) R.E.M will tour in swing states.
This first single, however, is one of the exceptionally lighter tracks from the album.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Why is this doing absolutely nothing at HAC? It's perfectly HAC... although the new trend for that format is to sleep on established artists...
Is there a video for it, and i so, why is it not on VH1?

Is there a video for it, and i so, why is it not on VH1? I have no clue. VH1 and Hot AC have their love for certain established artists. They worshipped U2 on their last release in playing all four single videos, and "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" each made the Top 10 at Hot AC. It's a shame what's often considered as the second best band to come out of the past two decades can't find love beyond Triple A now. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This is why I hate radio. I only listen to my CD's. They play horrible artists like Britney, and ignore established talented artists like REM. If you are over 35, your chances of being played on the radio are slim.
In good news, I read that VH1 added REM's new music video along with Duran Duran's new video this week. I will check out "Fresh" this coming weekend.

I'm guessing Hot ACs are hesitant because it's so downtempo, but with such a core artist, that should not be a factor. I imagine with a few more weeks on top of the AAA chart, Hot AC would have to take notice.

Maybe they would have had better luck in the recent past if they had done something other than releasing the same song over and over again, just with minor variations. They had something good with "Bang and Blame" but after that... "Bittersweet Me," "Great Beyond," "Imitation of Life"... blah. And none of those three made sense either.
"Leaving New York" is a vast improvement. I even really like this one, and I haven't been able to say that about any other REM song I can remember. (There have been a few that I liked a bit, but none of them stuck out as special to me like this one does.) I don't remember seeing it go for adds on Hot AC though. If it does it should at least do something.

Not a bad video. Should be on VH1 and MTV2 but that's impossible since A) neither channelplays videos anymore and B) they wouldn't play a song by a veteran act that isn't charting anyway.
