What an amazing song. Apparently the version being sent to radio is remixed slightly. Haven't heard it yet, but Billboard likes it:
DAMIEN RICE Cannonball Producer(s): Damien Rice, Mark "Spike" Stent, Paul "P-Dub" Walton Writer(s): D. Rice Publisher(s): Warner/Chappell Music Publishing Ltd. PRS Genre: ROCK Label/Catalog Number: (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: January 17, 2004
In an age when the bottom line is stifling creativity and the mass dissemination and promotion of that creativity, it's nice to see Vector/Warner Bros. making good on their promise to promote Damien Rice well into 2004, despite his lauded debut, "O," being more than 1 year old. This exquisite track—one of the highlights of "O"—gets more of a pulse on this remixed version, as drums have been added to the percussionless original (which is also included). The addition proves genius, with the kick drum adding well-timed punch, subtlely mixed cymbal splashes emphasizing Rice's heart-emptying choruses and the crisply played high-hats adding freshness. That said, what makes this one a winner, more than anything else, is the glassy-eyed sadness in the stanzas, the smart metaphor and rhyme in the chorus ("It's not hard to fall when you float like a cannonball") and the God-given soul of Rice. Apart from making for an exciting listening experience, the new additions (courtesy of Spike Stent) just may give the tune enough of an edge for radio programmers to get the track to all those people still wondering (for whatever damn reason) what all the fuss is about.—WO

Wow, this one's taking off a lot faster than "Volcano." It's already in the AAA Top 20.

This song could do big things. Tonight it had a prominent placement on FOX's "The OC". I love it more with each listen.

Absolutely marvelous! A true highlight to kick off 2004.
I predict great things for this second single from "O" and believe it will be the one to show mainstream radio why Damien has such a big buzz right now.
I can see this pulling a "Babylon", where David Gray managed to take his breakthrough single to #57 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Cannonball" will perform similarly.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I'm very upset of the lack of attention this single is getting on other formats.
This should definitely be a Top 20 Hot AC hit. But it isn't even on the current chart! How depressing to see such a high quality track so oblivious like this outside of Triple A.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I wound up liking the album version more than the radio edit. It didn't stick with me quite as long as I thought it would at first, though.

I'm slow, it just debuted on my chart this week. I love it! Haven't really heard the album version much but from what I heard it sounded good too.
