I don't like it. I have not liked their past several singles.

This will be the lead single from the Shrek 2 soundtrack. This is the second Counting Crows single to ever be upbeat (Mr. Jones the only other happy-toned single of theirs) This may do something on Hot AC besides Triple A, all because this is from the Shrek 2 soundtrack. My Prediction: #9Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I'd count Hanginaround as an upbeat single... anyone know how that did at Hot AC? I know it charted decently on Alternative.

I'd count Hanginaround as an upbeat single... anyone know how that did at Hot AC? I know it charted decently on Alternative. I don't know of its Hot AC peak, but it fell just short of the Top 20 on CHR/Pop so I'm assuming it was quite high. Plus it is a moderately-strong recurrent on my station. I've never really considered "Hanginaround" upbeat. It definitely sounds catchy, but I meant upbeat/downbeat as far as mood is concerned as opposed to the tempo. The lyrics suggest deep apathy to me. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Yeah, I agree lyrically. I guess I was thinking more of the "party" feel it has. Thanks for the info. I don't think it got much play on our Hot AC around here (WTIC in hartford) but I could be wrong, I was away at college at the time. But I know our alternative played it before switching entirely to a more "new-rock" format.

Actually, it peaked at #18 on CHR/Pop. How did "Accidentaly In Love" get so many adds this week? The hype for "Shrek II" is encouraging the promotion of this track. It really is a catchy tune and I imagine will become one of Counting Crows' more larger hits. I'm actually more suprised about Jason Mraz getting 21 adds for his latest. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It's up +525 spins as of the evening... not too shabby. It'll be interesting to see how this compares with Big Yellow Taxi's run. Their singles (the sucessful ones anyway) tend to be slow burners, but with some help from shrek they seem to be bucking the trend.

COUNTING CROWS Accidentally in Love Producer(s): Brendan O'Brien Writer(s): A. Duritz, D. Vickrey, Publisher(s): Songs of SKG/EMI Blackwood Music o/b/o itself and Jones Falls Music, BMI Label/Catalog Number: Geffen GEFR-11151-2 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: May 22, 2004 By agreeing to write the opening song for anticipated movie sequel "Shrek 2," Counting Crows likely experienced a bit of pressure in their quest to make kids everywhere happy. But the Crows can rest easy. "Accidentally in Love"—the perfect kickoff to summer—will tickle the tots and their parents too. With its simple guitar strokes and sugary harmonizing, though, the pop/rock melody could burn out quickly. Still, everyone needs that light and breezy book—or in this case, sing-along song—for the beach season. When Crows frontman Adam Duritz belts the sunny chorus, "Come on, come on/Turn a little faster . . . Because everybody's after love," just try not surrendering. Sure, the song is a little sappy. But it sounds just right.—SA

I like it. I don't think this will kill them like it did Smash mouth, but of course they have less to lose in the first place anyway.

Maybe so.... Walkin' On The Sun All Star Can't Get Enough of You Baby Then the Morning Comes Waste Yeah, you are right, I guess Smash Mouth just had two songs that were much larger than about anything the Counting Crows had. The thing about Counting Crows is, though they also are a band on a decline sales-wise and in star power, there is really no comparison. Counting Crows have been defined by the lyrical integrity of Adam Duritz. Critics heralded their first two releases with enthusiasm, saying "Adam is the next Bob Dylan" or "Adam is the new great lyrical discovery". Critics remain generally favorable to Counting Crows, though some do admit they'd like to see more of Adam a a poet than a songwriter. Which Adam was precisely the latter on "Hard Candy", desiring to write catchy melodies over deep, introspective lyrics. Smash Mouth really aren't defined by anything, they were just a lucky successul breakthrough. Many people still relate to the death of hip in "Walkin On The Sun" and I think that single just rung a bell to those new-age rockers yearning for its renaissance. Then, they just got lucky again with "All Star", but you really can't blame the single becoming immensely sucessful. It is exactly what Radio Disney wanted to hear and it caught on everywhere else. So the point is Counting Crows are no Smash Mouth. The reason why Smash Mouth have crashed and burned from the pedestal is because they aren't defined for anything, they just happened. Counting Crows ARE defined for something, and because of that, the band may dominate maistream again at any moment. All they need is a hit album like "August & Everything After". Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The critical acclaim they've had has really died down a lot, and this song isn't going to help the diminishing opinions.

The thing I liked about big yellow taxi is they did something unique and made it their own, unlike many of the other covers that came out around the same time (drift away, don't dream its over, etc).
It may not have been a great choice from the perspective of their core 'alternative' audience, but it gave counting crows what they really needed at the time -- a footfold at Hot AC, which they hadn't really had since A Long December in '97. In fact its still a strong recurrent a year and a half after its release.

This will be their biggest hit since Mr. Jones!! I see a Top 5 at Hot AC and I don't know, It used to be so easy to predict POP, but anymore Hot AC is more like CHR was 4 years ago. A song about Roses smelling like poop is going Top 10 and this one would have went Top 10 3-4 years ago, but these days with all the hip/hop & teen rock it may only go like #26 or something. I guess with a Top 50 chart now and so many hip hop leaning top 40's out there, A Top 30 hit would be highly successful for a singer/songwriter/90's band type... although for all the traditional Top 40's like WVSR in Charleston,WV this will be in POWER!!!!

Actually the lyric in "Roses" is "roses smell like boo boo boo". Still the lyric that opens the chorus "I know you'd like to think that your s**t don't stank" is indeed quite a juvenille lyric for the Top 10, but all in all I love the cleverness of "Roses". I really do think also this will be the biggest hit for Counting Crows possibly since "A Long December". If Jason Mraz could go Top 10 a year ago, why not Counting Crows again? My prediction as below the Top 10, but again, I predicted "The Remedy" would scratch the Top 20. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Roses is outstanding, in my opinion, better than TWYM and Hey Ya. Anyways, this won't kill the Counting Crows, they are too established, I mean hell, it really has been ten years since they hit the mainstream charts, that's pretty established if you ask me. I still have yet to hear Accidentally In Love, but I hope it does well for them, I'm always a fan of Mid-90's Alternative getting thrown into the daily mix.

I wasn't making fun of "Roses" by Outkast just in case anyone thought I was. I just find it too be on the novelty side like "Because I Got High" or something. I like it, what I meant it's hard to predict the CHR Top 40 Charts the last couple years. Like in 2000 "Bent" went #1 at POP, but would "Bent" still go #1 today, at HOT AC indeed it would. Hot AC is CHR POP Traditional and CHR POP is CHR/Urban these days. To me "Bent" is and should always be a #1 hit. I thought "Disease" would go alot higher on POP and "Unwell" would have went #1 a few years back. "Bright Lights" I thought would have went Top 10. Also Sheryl Crow's "First Cut.." I believe peaked at #11, To me it was a stronger song than her early 90's "Strong Enough" which went #2. Bands like Sugar Ray,Smash Mouth, & Vertical Horizon are lucky to scrape the Top 50 these days and the songs are still as catchy. That's all I was saying, that's why this past year I switched my format to Adult Top 40 and I predict if Top 40 stays this way, you'll see a whole lot more Adult Top 40's pop up in the future. Some people hate rap & hip hop and some people hate listening to AC easy music. They want a straight up hit station, something like Adult Top 40.

I agree with pretty much all of it. Adult Top40 is about all I'd ever listen to if I had a station that had that format.

Some people hate rap & hip hop and some people hate listening to AC easy music. They want a straight up hit station, something like Adult Top 40. Well, "Unwell" peaked at #3 on CHR/Pop, and that was last summer. If it didn't take forever for it to peak like it did, it would have most likely went #1, even with the Beyonce hype and the Black Eyed Peas grip on top. So I'm under the impression that "Bent" could have very well peaked at #1 even if it wasn't released until today. Heck, "If You're Gone" is not much different from "The Reason". "If You're Gone" could have even outpeaked its 2001 #5 peak if it was released at this time instead. In the case for Counting Crows, it may be more of a challenge to go Top 10 here just because the Crows haven't exactly intentionally aimed for a catchy song over a poetic song until recently. They're in different territory here and they just have to hope to be lucky the gravy train will stop for them. The way I see it, "Accidentally In Love" has the potential to be a Top 10 hit, but the real question is, will the chance be rewarded to them? Sincerely, Noah Eaton

True "The Reason" and other pop/rock songs are still big on CHR POP no doubt about it. But you can't honestly tell me today's CHR Chart doesn't lean way more towards the urban/hip hop and teeny bop stuff. There will always be pop/rock hits, but will that demo that doesn't like rap & hip hop stick around to hear them as more and more Adult Top 40's pop up which play crossovers "Hey Ya" & "With You" typre stuff too. As "The Reason" being like "If You're Gone", you can't compare because Hoobastank is a younger rock band who seems to be the in thing right now. "If You're Gone" went to #4 at Pop and timing got it back then. I see no more 700+ bullets for Matchbox Twenty at Pop. All I was saying is CHR Top 40 4 years ago is Adult Top 40 today and I think alot of the older demo are gonna jump ship when they find out. Now I'm not saying Adult Top 40 isn't progressing and it'll stay 2001 forever on their playlists. I'm simply saying if you look back at the Top 40 charts of the last 40 years of Pop music you'll see through Acid Rock & Disco through Urban Cowboy Country to Grunge Rock, Top 40 has always been based on Pop & Rock music at the core. Phil Collins,Bryan Adams,Tom Petty,Madonna,Richard Marx,Chicago,Mariah Carey,Elton John,Elvis,The Beatles,Fleetwood Mac,Bon Jovi,Goo Goo Dolls right up until the last few years Top 40 was dominated by True Pop/Rock. Sure there was always crossover R&B,dance, rock, but the core was Pop/Rock. In 1999 Phil Collins went Top 40 with "You'll Be In My Heart" and last year he went Adult Top 40 with "Can't Stop Loving You" which is a great Pop song. So I'm not saying CHR Top 40 is going under or that Adult Top 40's better, All i'm saying is that it's going to get bigger and alot of fans of Traditional Top 40 are gonna feel comfortable knowing Top 40 will live on and great Pop/Rock songs will still get major airplay. For instance Bryan Adams, he started in the early 80's and was still big at Top 40 in '98. That's a 15,16 year career on Top 40. Now with Adult Top 40, bands like Matchbox Twenty and 3 Doors Down & Sheryl Crow will have a home for years and it doesn't matter if CHR eventually thinks they're too old or not. Sometimes CHR will let old rockers in for one song and then be like that's enough and the cd stops selling. I remember Def Leppard "Promises" and then the follow-up "Goodbye" was a great Power Ballad and it got like 15 adds and never took off. I've seen it happen to alot of bands. But with Adult Top 40 atleast we know they will have been given a fair chance and if the songs bad it's bad but If it is a hit, Adult Top 40 will embrace it, or you never know CHR could go even more Hip Hop and Adult Top 40 could become CHR and then a new format will arise. It's all good, because they'll will always be a True Top 40 for the older demo out there.
