Anybody know when this is going to be released? Lead singer Ed Roland said it's going to radio 'soon' but wasn't more specific.
The new cd is supposed to come out in August.

Apparently somebody tried this out, then stopped playing it.

I'd love to hear it though.

I knew there had been some live cuts of the song circulating that CS has been playing at recent gigs but I didn't think the 'official' studio version was out there yet.

They performed this live last summer and I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "this could definitely be a hit." It was very catchy, if I recall correctly.

I like several of their old songs, but the the leadoff single for the past two albums were weak, IMO. I never listened to either cd in its entirety, so I can't speak for the other songs. Anyways, I'll give "Hollywood" a chance to see if it wins me over.

Depends on what you consider the "first single" from Youth. The station I work for pushed "Under Heaven's Skies" as the lead, one of my favorite tracks from the record. But if you're going the "Counting The Days" route, then I completely agree.

Good point. I was referring to "Counting the Days"... haven't heard of the other song.

'Counting The Days' was the first single, then 'Better Now', then 'How Do You Love.'
'Under Heaven's Skies' was considered for the third single, but ultimately they went with 'How Do You Love' instead.
I'm confused over something... apparently 'Hollywood' has already charted briefly, before being sent to radio. How would that happen? Somebody playing an advance copy? A live cut? I don't know as much about how these things work as most of you.

'Counting The Days' was the first single, then 'Better Now', then 'How Do You Love.' I thought "Better Now" was an amazing song. I don't understand why it didn't do even better than it did. Looking forward to hearing "Hollywood"

Thanks for the clarification on the singles. "Under Heaven's Skies" is a great song and should have been a single, IMO.
At any rate, I'm afraid that Collective Soul, among several other 90s *alternative* bands, has fallen victim to format shifts. Back in the mid 90s, they belonged on Top 40 stations because they fit into that eclectic sound that included the likes of Alanis, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, etc. Unfortunately, you just don't expect that kind of company on a Hot AC type of format anymore. As discussed on the Hot AC birthday thread, the format is shifting toward poppier extremes each year, which squeezes out those bands that aren't heavy enough for the new Alternative format yet not light enough for Triple A. It feels like a lost generation of music. CS still puts out solid music, but where does it fit these days?

If I remember right, Counting The Days was sent to a rock format, then Better Now and How Do You Love went to Hot AC, though Better Now charted on mainstream rock as well.
So I'm not certain where Hollywood will be released to first. I just assumed Hot AC.

There's no reason bands like CS, Counting Crows, Matchbox, etc. can't be on several formats. PD's & label execs forcing them into format boxes is beyond stupid and just hurts the music industry as a whole, to say nothing of limiting the band's future careers.

Well I just read in FMQB that 'Hollywood' is being released to Triple A on 6/12. I didn't see anything about a Hot AC release date.

This debuted on Mediabase Hot AC May 17 at #134. Today it's at #77.
Triple A, it showed up a couple of days ago and is now at #83.
Seems like a pretty good start! I seem to remember it took 'Better Now' forever to slog its way up the Hot AC chart, though it did finally make Top Ten.

I like this. My station played this last week. It is a feel-good song.
And it's almost top 50!

My Hot AC station in Charlotte had a "smash/trash vote" on this song (I still haven't heard it), and in an area where Collective Soul usually does really well, the votes were 50% smash 50% trash (which isn't very good for a new song, I've learned, unless it has a rap in it or a completely novel sound) - "Better Now," on the other hand, was picked up pretty quickly by markets in the Southeast

Either their myspace or website... the latter is www.collectivesoul.comLooks like this is doing very well so far. They seem to have timed everything well.

This is a really catchy song and perfect for summer. This should be able to go top 10 or at least top 15 on Hot AC!

It's only up 49 plays from last week - moving really slowly - would expect more after the success of their last two singles on Hot AC - thanks for the link! Still haven't heard the song

New album is titled "Afterwords." Hopefully they put "When The Water Falls" on the record and release it as a single ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) Best non-single from the self-titled era.

Unfortunately, I think they missed the boat on this song "Hollywood" (just listened to it on myspace) - the verse is a rip-off of "Magic" by the Cars (don't know if you guys remember it from the 80s) - the two songs (verses) are almost identical

I'm a big Collective Soul fan, but I'm not really impressed with this song. It's alright, but it's nothing special.

I'm a big Collective Soul fan, but I'm not really impressed with this song. It's alright, but it's nothing special. That is the general consensus among Collective Soul fans on their two message boards. When you consider how good most of their singles have been, right up to 'Better Now' from a couple of years ago, 'Hollywood' seems pretty limp by comparison. Still, it's shaping up to be a decent-sized hit for them. #39 on Mediabase Hot AC right now... made top 20 on Triple A.
