All right, I have to admit that I dreaded starting a thread on Hot AC about Michael Buble. However, his latest AC hit "Everything" is picking up some steam on this format, and getting enough airplay to make the top 40. I recall his other Hot AC hit "Home" did mildly well on this format too.
So here's my question - Why does the soft-AC-oriented Buble get the attention of a fair share of Hot AC stations, but the other big-time soft-AC crooner Josh Groban has a very difficult time on this format?
It's not that I'm hoping for either artist to do well at Hot AC. Quite frankly, both Buble and Groban damn-near make me upchuck. I'm just curious why one does fairly well here, but the other doesn't.

If you ask me, it's because Bublé is still "contemporary" enough to get played on the format. Obviously, some of his jazz remakes would never do business, but his original material is rather upbeat, and appeals to the older side of the HotAC demo (hell, some of the younger ones, too). The problem Groban has is that his songs are always big, sweeping ballads, with a choir, and strings, and the second, third and fourth comings of Christ.

Yeah, if you ask me, Josh Groban sings almost in an opera style, which would completely alienate most Hot AC listeners - "You Lift Me Up" was actually played more on CHR/Pop stations than on Hot AC stations when it was released Michael Buble sings in the style of Sinatra, which is probably nostalgic for the upper end of the Hot AC demo maybe whose parents listened to this "crooner" type of music - "Everything" is going to come to a screeching halt, though, once it reaches a certain point on the Hot AC chart b/c many 20-30 something listeners just don't like the music style (including me) :)
