Just looking at this chart, I don't know if I should laugh. First of all, while it's nice to see The Veronicas move up 12 spots and be this week's highest jumper to land at #28, I don't think it's going to translate into much in the following week or two, especially now that it's beginning to move down, and seeing how AT40 is a few weeks behind the official charts.
And in tracking its movement week-to-week, it's almost a joke - it debuted at #40 and stayed there for a week or two before jumping up to #33 only to fall back to #40 and get stuck there again, and now all of a sudden, it jumps up to #28? I won't be surprised if that's its peak, because chances are it's going to fall down again. How far? Who knows?
And then, there's 3 Doors Down. "It's Not My Time" had the biggest drop last week from #29 to #37 and now it goes back up to the same position from where it dropped the week before.
Out of curiosity, has there been a weird case in the history of the AT40 where a song that had the highest jump in one week would completely fall off the following week? Maybe there was, but I can't really think of an example at the moment. If someone does know of one, please let me know.

The problem though is not with the chart data, but with keeping songs on the chart far longer than necessary. The Hot AC format is a slow moving format. It is far more recurrent intensive than any other format except for the AC format. It is definately far more recurrent intensive than the CHR format where you would be lucky to hear songs that are more than five years old more than ten times a week. And though the HAC format is a current based format, the recurrent and gold library is what differentiates this format from most CHR formats. Therefore, the AT40 chart reflects this. But herein lies the problem. It makes for a boring chart to listen to week by week. And as I stated on another thread, the songs within the bottom half of the chart are so bunched up together that it is not at all uncommon to see songs move up ten spots in one week only to drop 8 spots the next, and then reverse course several more times beyond that. Once again as I have stated before, there is a reason why Mediabase and BDS have established recurrent rules. They did this to keep their charts fresh, and to give a fair shot to artists to get their songs heard and played. I understand why AT 40 refuses to remove recurrents, because they don't want to be playing songs their affiliates are not playing yet. But I think some sort of recurrent rule needs to be established, and/or maybe they should cut the chart down to the top 20 or 30 instead. Although accurate, it is silly to see songs on the chart for over 80 weeks, let alone three on at once! I think the time has come to establish some recurrent rules for this chart. I have not seen a chart anywhere in the world with songs hanging around this long! Let's hope this will be the last one we see.

Why can't they just cancel it?!?

Could you imagine how bad an AT40 AC show would be? You might have (I've Had) The Time of My Life at #40 or something!

Something from the late 1980s would just be pushing it. On AC, at the very least, it would go at least as far back to something in the late 1990s/early 2000s - so songs like "I Knew I Loved You", "With Arms Wide Open", "If You're Gone", or "I'm Like a Bird" just to name a few from a massive pack. But I definitely see what you're getting at.
