At least there's movement on this chart (unlike that other chart)! That is except for Eric Hutchinson who is stuck at #32 again this week despite still being bulleted and in the top 20 on the Mediabase and Billboard charts.

Something interesting with Pussycat Dolls and #37 I've noticed browsing this weekend's charts.

"I Hate This Part" which debuted at #37 three weeks ago is still stuck there. Coincidentally, on the Pop version of the AT40, it falls down to #37 there this week.

On the Pop version of Rick Dees' chart, "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" which was a sure shot two weeks ago, debuted last week at #37 only to drop out this week.

As for the Hot AC version of AT40, "I Hate This Part" was never featured as a breakout or extra - a song that peaks in the #30s on Mediabase is not good enough to be sampled or charted on AT40.

I know! I thought that was SO weird. The ONLY other song that's lasted only one week on Rick's chart was Just Stand Up!, and that song was meant to be a promotional thing for a very short period of time, I think. Or maybe Rick's just biased against songs that end with an exclamation point

On a side note, also on Rick's pop chart this week, Flo Rida's Sugar debuts at #26. That's the highest debut Rick's had in over two years. So the rarity of a dropoff after only one week, and the rarity of a debut at #26, both in the same week?! Leads me to believe he may be changing his compilation method. And about AT40 snubbing I Hate This Part, I think that's ridiculous. As sheety as AT40 is, I've seen that it usually doesn't snub the songs that do fairy well. So that's surprising to me that it snubbed IHTP.

Well, you can tell Rick fudges songs every so often since there are usually one or two songs each week that rank at the same position on both versions of his chart. I think he does that to save time preparing each show. However, that tactic is lazy and does not lead to accuracy!

The other tactic he uses in constructing his chart that suggests it is a "dartboard" chart as many here have dubbed it as is that a decending song that has passed its peak never, and I do mean NEVER reverses itself back up the chart. For example, on the official charts you will occasionally see a decending song rebound a spot or two once in awhile, reflecting actual changes in number of plays. This leads me to believe that Rick uses the old method (used by most chart shows from the 60's through early 90's) where he fudges his chart to keep songs moving despite having access to actual chart data through Mediabase or BDS. This method was used in the early days of top 40 radio when stations mailed in playlists that were completely devoid of actual data, this before the days of computerized 24 hour monitoring of actual radio airplay existed.

Having said all this though, inaccurate or not, Rick's chart is certainly more interesting to follow, and not that far off the official charts outside of Eric Hutchinson on this week's chart and the Plain White T's about a month ago. I'll take his chart over AT40's any day!

I noticed that too! Once a song has peaked, it's a smooth descent for that song. There has been ONE exception to this I have noted throughout my years following his chart. Well, three, if you count re-entries. Suddenly I See and Pictures of You both re-entered after they had dropped off. The other exception is Whine Up by Kat Deluna. Towards the end of its life, it spent a considerable number of weeks at number 40, before actually going up one spot to 39, and then dropping off. So I think you're right about the "dartboard" tactic.

As for the same-spot-on-two-charts deal, Angels on the Moon was at the same spot on Rick's CHR and HAC charts for eight or nine weeks straight, and over ten weeks total I'm pretty sure. After it's eight/nine/whatever week-run of consistency, there was one week where it was 27 on CHR and 28 on HAC, and then the next three weeks it was at 25 on both charts again. Every week I would check his charts and just EXPECT that it would be at the same position on both charts, that's how consistent it was. Another note on that, if you check the year end top 100 charts for 2008, a REMARKABLE number of songs have the same positions on the CHR and HAC charts. Hollywood's Not America was 89 on both CHR and HAC, and it never even made his CHR chart! I don't know what the deal with that was. Probably a mistake or something. Still interesting to note, though. Honestly, though, I think when a song is in the same spot on both charts, it's a coincidence. So I don't think that's a "tactic," just more of something that has potential to happen a lot, happens a lot less than it has potential too, but only gets noticed for when it happens and not when it DOESN'T happen, if you know what I mean.

As for taking Rick's chart over AT40 anyday, I completely agree! Much more interesting. Who knows what'll happen? Probably not even Rick, lol.
