This sounds too much like "Say Hey (I Love You)." It even sounds like it's in the same key.

Michael Franti/Spearhead is perhaps too adult-leaning in terms of demographic/target audience appeal to become a staple at this format, for much the same reason Jack Johnson isn't one. If anything, I'm surprised Michael Franti & Spearhead are being ignored at Alternative radio. If Jack Johnson and the Dirty Heads can enjoy considerable success there, why can't they? Their music complements the format very well. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

These types of songs used to routinely become big hits here. Now their first hit did hit the top 10 here and I'm not ready to write off "Sunshine" either. But it definitely is struggling and that is ashame since the Hot AC format needs to continue to embrace those Triple A crossovers that give this format a unique flavor. Relying more and more on Usher and Rihanna, while not a bad thing if done in moderation, is not the way the Hot AC format should go since it is already sounding too much like a traditional CHR format already. As I have stated many times here before, some Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc. is fine, but leave the rap and the bulk of the rhythmic product for CHR. As far as MF&S not making inroads on Alternative radio, well, that format has long skewed towards a harder edge (at least here in Chicago on Q101) and is far less receptive towards the Triple A leaning folksy type of music that it once embraced. I would just be happy to see them continue to do well on Triple A and Hot AC radio for the foreseeable future.

I think Alternative is really reluctant to play anything that's getting a lot of Hot AC airplay (with very few exceptions) - Michael Franti's first single got played tons on HAC, so IMO that pretty much writes off the entire CD as far as Alt. stations are concerned - most HACs aren't playing Jack Johnson and Dirty Heads, and I'm almost willing to bet that the ones that are don't have Alt. stations in the same market playing those same acts

Usually the order a song will get airplay goes Alt -> Hot AC, not the other way around.
Michael Franti & Spearhead have actually been around for awhile, and are probably considered too veteran to suddenly start getting Alt airplay. How many acts release several albums, and then get Alt airplay? I honestly can't think of any, unless you count whatever stations picked up "Smooth" in 1999-2000.
EDIT: "The Sound Of Sunshine" is this act's seventh album, and Franti is actually 44 years old. Who'd a-thunk that?

That said, it is obviously their breakout release. * To address your other point, I don't buy that because Jack Johnson received generous helpings of Alternative play from the beginning, yet that didn't stop him from getting a Top Ten off of "Flake" here, and that crossover bid along with "Upside Down" didn't hurt him at Alternative. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus Jack Johnson never received "generous helpings" of Alternative play www.popradiotop20.com/Modern-Rock/JackJohnson.htmUpside Down peaked at #25, which is barely any Alternative play at all (look at the spin numbers for songs in that portion of the Alt. chart) - and that was a big HAC single The only Jack Johnson single to hit Top 10 Alternative was You And Your Heart, and that barely got any Hot AC play

And "Flake", although it didn't have a big peak, obviously hung around forever.

Whoops guess I read that too fast lol If I Had Eyes was his only Top 10 Alternative hit - still a song that barely got any HAC play though
