Well if we are talking about just songs from 2009, I'll give you these four:
"Love, Save The Empty" by Erin McCarley "99 Times" by Kate Voegele "Closer To Love" by Mat Kearney (decent hit, but not huge) "Lucky" by Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat
Yes, I know "Lucky" was a top 10 hit, but ten years ago this would have been a number one hit for multiple weeks. I guess the chart has become too "pop" and therefore "Lucky" would now be considered too "soft" for some Hot AC stations. Still a decent hit, but not as big as I thought.
Everyone have a happy and safe New Year! :)

Love, Save the Empty - Erin McCarley
This song was one of the best of 2009, easily.

Love, Save the Empty - Erin McCarley This song was one of the best of 2009, easily. It definitely was one of my favorites too. Too bad it did not get much airplay here in Chicago aside from our north suburban Hot AC from Lake County, IL, WXLC. You can still hear it played occasionally on there, but the two Chicago Hot AC stations, WTMX and WCFS barely touched it at all. Oh well. At least they both play Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga at least twice an hour!

I would also say Learning the Hard Way by Gin Blossoms
I agree with most of the ones mentioned.

Good choices here.
Dave Matthews Band should have gotten some big Hot AC hits this era, especially "You & Me" which was made for Hot AC!

I think Hot AC is missing the boat by not crossing over more country tracks. Here's a list of recent ones that I think would have done well on the format.
Dierks Bentley - Sideways Lady Antebellum - I Run To You It's America - Rodney Atkins Toby Keith - God Love Her Keith Urban - Sweet Thing Lady Antebellum - Need You Now Billy Currington - Don't Luke Byran - Do I Kenny Chesney & Dave Matthews - I'm Alive Kellie Pickler - Best Days Of Your Life Jimmy Wayne - I Will

Still pissed at my Hot AC station for totally ignoring it. Even after having Ed Roland in studio singing it and the morning dj professing his love for the song. And someone mentioned Anna Nalick. She really could have been a big star if she had followed up her first hit with something else from her album. Something more upbeat and fun. I think they tried to make her too serious when she had a lot of great, pop songs on her album.

I'm very surprised that did not at least make the top 20, but I guess DMB has morphed more into a Triple A act than Hot AC act. I'll add one more very obscure song from last year that only got a smattering of airplay on a few Hot AC stations. That would be Mandy Moore's "I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week". It's a very catchy retro sounding song with a hook that's been stuck in my head much of the year. I did not expect it to be a huge hit, but I think it only barely cracked the HAC top 40 for a few weeks if I recall correctly.

I like many of the songs that you listed but I'll stick with my opinion that I only think there's so much room on HotAC playlists for rock/pop artists that don't get alternative/rock/pop airplay that if you start giving their airtime to country artists the normal HotAC artists won't have any format left. I don't want to see that happen.

I don't want to see that happen. I think there are a couple of country artists who'd fit right in - Lady Antebellum would certainly be one, and I'd argue that there are other selections which wouldn't do too badly. But I agree - I sure as heck don't ever want to hear Toby Keith or Tim McGraw, or heaven forbid, Daryl Worley on my HAC station.

"Get Out Of My Mind" Hootie, Vertical Horizon "Forever" & Smash Mouth "So Insane" and i got 1 to add,it still gets me why "Downfall" was released instead of "All I Need","Cold","The Difference" & "Hand Me Down" but mostly "All I Need".

I agree, about half that list is songs that will never see the light of day outside of country. One, though, is on its way to doing so, however - "Need You Now", which is now up to #46.

Seems like the ballads can have the steel guitar and fiddle taken out, but the faster songs seem to keep the 'twang'. In addition, unless it's Keith Urban, I can't imagine any current male artist being played in a different format. Just seems like the vocals stay country. Of the ones listed, I could see Lady A. getting some airplay (like they have) and Pickler as a long shot with this song.

Delta Goodrem "In This Life" Lesley Roy "Slow Goodbye" Agreed 100% on Delta Goodrem! One of my favorite songs of 2008. I'll add "Sweet About Me" by Gabriella Cilmi.
