The "A" show for this week is from 5/1/1971 (didn't Sirius XM already air this countdown last week?) No, they aired April 24th, with the Harry Belafonte extra intact fortunately. I’m kind of amazed they’re airing May 1st as a A show since it’s one of 3 shows with the war criminal ballad in the top 40. (tho I’m not at all against it)

... The "A" show for this week is from 5/1/1971 ... It previously aired back in 2007! It hasn't been played in 16 years! ... This would be the first time airing with Ken Martin's mono2stereo conversion and it was, as always, spectacular.

Again this weekend there is one '80s show and two '70s shows so again my weekend preview will be a two-parter. Again, we'll tackle the '80s show first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 5/14/1988. Here is a previous repost: Six songs debuted this week: "The Valley Road" - Bruce Hornsby & The Range (#32) "Alphabet St." - Prince (#33) "Kiss Me Deadly" - Lita Ford (#35) "Nite And Day" - Al B. Sure! (#38) "Da Butt" - E.U. (#39) "Dirty Diana" - Michael Jackson (#40) Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "One Step Up" - Bruce Springsteen (#19) "I Saw Him Standing There" - Tiffany (#20) "Man In The Mirror" - Michael Jackson (#31) "Rocket 2 U" - The Jets (#34) "Ritual" - Dan Reed Network (#38) "Endless Summer Nights" - Richard Marx (#40) At least unlike Casey sometimes (especially on this program) I always mention the songs and the acts falling out of the Top 40. :) Biggest Mover: "One More Try" - George Michael (#14 to #4) Biggest Dropper: "I Wish I Had A Girl" - Henry Lee Summer (#23 to #36) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "The Search Is Over" - Survivor "What A Wonderful World" - Louis Armstrong Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Don't Worry, Be Happy" - Bobby McFerrin Hour #2: "Look Away" - Chicago Hour #3: "Bad Medicine" - Bon Jovi Hour #4: "Wild Wild West" - Escape Club BTW remember Premiere aired "Bad Medicine" for a 1988 show last year after one of Bon Jovi's band members (Alec John Such) died. The '70s preview is coming soon.

Forgot to mention this last weekend. How many times has this happened?
The 5/1/1971 chart had Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" at #4 The 5/9/1987 chart had Cyndi Lauper's remake of "What's Goin On" at #12.
We got to hear both versions on the same weekend, which would mean they would have had to have released them at the same time of year.

Let's bump this thread back up, shall we? Anyway, one '80s show and two '70s shows means once again the weekend preview will be a two-parter. I'll start with the '80s show first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 5/19/1984 which was aired just last year. Here is an edited repost: Four songs debuted this week: "It's A Miracle" - Culture Club (#30) "Who's That Girl" - The Eurythmics (#38) "Eyes Without A Face" - Billy Idol (#39) "Almost Paradise" - Mike Reno & Ann Wilson (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Don't Answer Me" - Alan Parsons Project (#21) "Automatic" - The Pointer Sisters (#30) "Show Me" - The Pretenders (#31) "Somebody's Watching Me" - Rockwell (#38) Biggest mover (tie): "The Reflex" - Duran Duran (#19 to #12) "Jump (For My Love)" - The Pointer Sisters (#35 to #28) Biggest Dropper: "A Fine Fine Day" - Tony Carey (#24 to #33) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Jump" - Van Halen "Only Time Will Tell" - Asia Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Dancing In The Dark" - Bruce Springsteen (NR) Hour #2: "Dance Hall Days" - Wang Chung (#45) Hour #3: "What Is Love" - Howard Jones (#46) Hour #4: "Legs" - ZZ Top (#64; debuted) Of note: Premiere has replaced The Cars' "Magic" as the Hour #1 optional extra with "Dancing In The Dark" The '70s preview is coming soon.

Now to preview this weekend's two '70s shows. The "A" show for this week is from 5/18/1974. Here is an edited repost: Two songs debuted this week: "Be Thankful For What You've Got" - William DeVaughn (#30) "Hollywood Swinging" - Kool & The Gang (#32) Two songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Sunshine On My Shoulders" - John Denver (#27) "Mockingbird" - Carly Simon & James Taylor (#37) Biggest Mover: "Sundown" - Gordon Lightfoot (#36 to #20) Biggest Dropper: "Lookin' For A Love" - Bobby Womack (#24 to #39) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Come Monday" - Jimmy Buffett (#96; debuted) Hour #2: "Save The Last Dance For Me" - DeFranco Family (#48) Hour #3: "Carefree Highway" - Gordon Lightfoot (NR) Of note: Premiere has replaced The Eagles' "Already Gone" as the Hour #3 optional extra with "Carefree Highway" as Premiere finally pays tribute to Gordon Lightfoot (despite him being already represented in the countdown with "Sundown" at #20) As for the "B" show, it's from 5/20/1978. Here is another edited repost: Only one song debuted this week: "Tumbling Dice" - Linda Ronstadt (#37) And only one song fell off this week: "Flashlight" - Parliament (#27) Biggest Mover: "Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty (#40 to #26) Biggest Dropper: "Dust In The Wind" - Kansas (#9 to #22) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Still The Same" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (#58) Hour #2: "Runnin' With The Devil" - Van Halen (#84) Hour #3: "Last Dance" - Donna Summer (#75) Of note: Premiere has replaced Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" as the Hour #3 optional extra with "Last Dance". Usually when Premiere changes the optional extras lineup for a "B" show, it's because somebody died and even though Donna Summer is dead, she died back in 2012. Not that recent!!!!!

Puzzled over the playing of the 1984 show as a standalone, as the exact same show (except for one changed optional extra) was also played by itself just last year, and Premiere has in recent years usually waited at least three years to repeat an A or standalone show, though they can be offered as B's sooner after. And we just got 1984 by itself four weeks ago. (Next week we're supposed to hear 1985, which hasn't been the A in over three months.)

Well this weekend there is only one regular '70s and '80s show but due to the Memorial Day holiday, I will still be making a two-part post. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 5/28/1977. Here is an edited repost: Six songs debuted this week: "Life On The Fast Lane" - The Eagles (#28) "Looks Like We Made It" - Barry Manilow (#33) "Back Together Again" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#34) "Gonna Fly Now (Theme from 'Rocky')" - Maynard Ferguson (#35) "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" - Andy Gibb (#37) "My Heart Belongs To Me" - Barbra Streisand (#40) Six songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "I Wanna Get Next To You" - Rose Royce (#22) "Dancing Man" - Q (#23) "Can't Stop Dancing" - Captain & Tennille (#26) "Show You The Way To Go" - The Jacksons (#28) "Don't Leave Me This Way" - Thelma Houston (#34) "Your Love" - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. (#40) Biggest Mover: "Jet Airliner" - Steve Miller Band (#30 to #20) Bigest Dropper: "I've Got Love On My Mind" - Natalie Cole (#25 to #39) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "You And Me" - Alice Cooper (#56) Hour #2: "Rebel Rouser" - Duane Eddy (NR) Hour #3: "I'm In You" - Peter Frampton (#68; highest debut) Of note: Premiere has replaced Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Just A Song Before I Go" (which you will recall Premiere already played as an optional extra for a 1977 "B" show earlier this year due to David Crosby's recent death) with "Rebel Rouser" which again feels like Premiere trying to fix something that wasn't really broken to begin with. "AT40: The '80s" this week is from 5/25/1985. Here again is an edited repost: Three songs debuted this week: "A View To A Kill" - Duran Duran (#36) "Oh Girl" - Boy Meets Girl (#39) "Lucky In Love" - Mick Jagger (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#33) "Lost In Love" - New Edition (#35) "I'm On Fire" - Bruce Springsteen (#38) Biggest Mover: "Heaven" - Bryan Adams (#20 to #12) Biggest Dropper: "That Was Yesterday" - Foreigner (#22 to #37) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Help!" - The Beatles "Through The Years" - Kenny Rogers Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Glory Days" - Bruce Springsteen (NR) Hour #2: "People Are People" - Depeche Mode (#79; debuted) Hour #3: "The Goonies R Good Enough" - Cyndi Lauper (#42) Hour #4: "Not Enough Love In The World" - Don Henley (#80; debuted) Of note: Premiere has replaced Menudo's "Hold Me" with "Glory Days" which makes it the second straight week that Premiere has replaced an optional extra from an '80s show with one by Bruce Springsteen. I'll preview the Holiday specials soon.

Premiere offered a last minute replacement of Don Henley's "Not Enough Love in the World" with Tina Turner's "Private Dancer". Not all stations downloaded the replacement though. Well this weekend there is only one regular '70s and '80s show but due to the Memorial Day holiday, I will still be making a two-part post. "AT40: The '80s" this week is from 5/25/1985. "Here's that May 25th 2002 AT40 as it aired on WPNC:" I just listened to this and the only songs that were palatable were the long distance dedications. The post 1990 Hip hop, rap and Grunge killed good music.

I was able to get recordings with "Private Dancer" in it. Funny that Tina Turner dies midweek and Premiere is quick to change extras for her while Gordon Lightfoot died on a Monday and Premiere had 1971 for an "A' show (If You Could Read My Mind) and 1976 for a "B" show (The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald) and did not change extras for either show.

...Of note: Premiere has replaced Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Just A Song Before I Go" (which you will recall Premiere already played as an optional extra for a 1977 "B" show earlier this year due to David Crosby's recent death) with "Rebel Rouser" which again feels like Premiere trying to fix something that wasn't really broken to begin with. ... Interestingly, this optional extra was presented as if it were an original extra from this very show, with Casey introducing it as such. But, if "Rebel Rouser" was ever played in its entirety on any AT40 program, I cannot find it. So, this appears to be a very well done "deep fake" of an AT40 original extra that never existed, which I'm guessing is the work of Ken Martin.

But, if "Rebel Rouser" was ever played in its entirety on any AT40 program, I cannot find it. So, this appears to be a very well done "deep fake" of an AT40 original extra that never existed, which I'm guessing is the work of Ken Martin. Ken has done a bunch of these, to which he has occasionally admitted over on at40fg.proboards.com/... dL

Hmmm. George Michael's I Want Your Sex. Many of the cue sheets at that time gave warnings to the program directors about that song and their choice to skip over that. The "B" show for this week is from 6/6/1987. Here is a prior repost: Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "I Want Your Sex" - George Michael (#51; highest debut) Hour #2: "Luka" - Suzanne Vega (#93; debuted) Hour #3: "Rock Steady" - The Whispers (#84; debuted) Hour #4: "Cross My Broken Heart" - The Jets (#63; debuted)

In the 1980 show, Casey mentioned 3 different song titles had each been used in 4 different top 40 hits. Saturday Night, You, and Call Me. What about "Lady"?
Styx, Little River Band and Kenny Rogers hit the top 40 with different songs titled Lady.
Any one else hit the top 40 with a song called "Lady"? The Whispers, of "Rock Steady" fame, had a same-titled tune, which was a #3 smash on the R&B chart, reach AT40 for four weeks in 1980. dL

Hmmm. George Michael's I Want Your Sex. Many of the cue sheets at that time gave warnings to the program directors about that song and their choice to skip over that. How did Larry handle it back then? dL Larry Morgan, wasn't the voice guy for AT40 in 1987.
When I hear him I always think of Larry Morgan the Pro Stock drag racer.
On the 6/20/187 cue sheet it says: This week, George Michael's controversial song, "I Want Your sex," jumps into the Top 40 at #36--with a bullet. Even though some programmers have elected to delete the song from their playlists, Billboard Magazine reports that sales are strong. Strong enough to keep pushing it up the chart. Since American Top 40 is faithful to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, we will, of course, include the song in the countdown. But we realize that each programmer is responsible for responding to the individual standards in his or her community. So, if you'd like to delete the song from our countdown, here's the information you'll need to do it quickly. As I said, the song ranks at #36, so that's side 1A on disk, and the middle of hour one, if you tape it from satellite."
The 1/2/1988 cue sheet says
December 15, 1987 Dear Program Director, If your station isn't playing George Michael's song, "I WANT YOUR SEX," then you might want to delete it from the 1987 Year End Countdown. It ranks as the 24th most popular song. And you' 11 find it at the begining of hour 7. That's the first song on side 7A
I've seen one of the cue sheets from another time, don't remember the date, that warned the PDs that because of the licensing contract, they can't remove songs from the show.
