- They were definitely fine-tuning the pacing of the show with new instrumentals that would be used later on in '85 and throughout 1986 - these would replace several from the original 1984 theme package. Compare this show with either show aired from '86 this year and you'll see what I mean - those shows have a distinct flow, while the rhythm isn't quite even here.
- I find it interesting that Casey introed "Along Comes a Woman" with their then-stats of 27 Top 40 hits, with 15 of them going Top 10 - "Now that's chart power!" he said. "Along Comes a Woman", which incidentally missed the Top 10, then proceeds to fall 12 notches to #34.
- I also find it interesting that "Things Can Only Get Better" received the softer jingle.
- OK, so I've ragged on Casey sometimes for giving away new #1 songs - but this week takes the cake! He flat out stated that "the biggest movie song in the survey" was the new #1 song in his lead-in to the final commercial break.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "We Are the World"
- #1 on the Album chart: We Are the World by USA For Africa
- #1 on the Country chart: "Somebody Should Leave" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"

I thought "Voices Carry" was also mentioned as being a week away from hitting the Top 40 (OK, so it wasn't said exactly that way but...).

I thought "Voices Carry" was also mentioned as being a week away from hitting the Top 40 (OK, so it wasn't said exactly that way but...). Listening again, it was...yeah, it was done similar to that of Tina Turner. Truth be told, though, I was moving out of my college room that morning, even as I had the show playing, so it's not really surprising that I missed parts in the later half.

It's also the first 1982 show to be repeated so far in the entire 80s series.
- "Goin' Down" is the only song spending more than two weeks at its current position.
- Casey answered a question letter asking what the highest position a song had fallen out of the Top 40 from was. Yes, that's right...in 1982. ;) Oddly enough, that song fell out from #7, only one spot lower than Air Supply would five months later.
- Casey stated the Hot 100 position that Queen rose from, #62. He also stated that they made the biggest move up the Hot 100 of any song.
- They used a different theme to close each hour; its most distinguishing feature was sounding like "American Top 40" set to a trumpet. All of the jingles were also a re-recorded set that sounded like those used in 1983 - shortly after having been introduced here in '82, they'd be pulled for a time, but would come back later until the entire theme package changed in '84.
- This would be the last show to feature a Top 3 final segment for a little more than three years.
- #1 on the Album chart: Asia
- #1 on the Country chart: "Always on My Mind"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "It's Gonna Take a Miracle"

- There also seemed to be more questions in the survey than usual this week.
- The first LDD makes me wonder if Casey ever participated in any of the Jerry Lewis-hosted telethons - I know Ed McMahon did and I feel like Dick Clark did as well.
- Larry Morgan noted the Bangles' current hit being at #40 with its follow-up being at #50 this week in his intro to "If She Knew What She Wants".
- The #1s on Billboard's other charts were read rather early, right after the first song in the final hour (#9).
- Something about the second LDD being read after "Take Me Home" seems kind of morbid, particularly when Casey read that the writer had felt that life wasn't worth living with her husband gone.
- Now, I've pointed out a couple of times when Casey would repeat stories in multiple shows - but this week, he gave a version of a story that was different from one told later. In the intro to "West End Girls", Casey told a brief story of the origin of their group name that involved them coming out of clubs. This is different from his story on 2/27/88, where the story in his intro to "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" was that it was based on there being several hip-hop groups coming from New York - all the groups had "Boys" in their name.
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney Houston
- #1 on the Soul chart: "On My Own"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Tomb of the Unknown Love" by Kenny Rogers

Here are this weekend's upcoming shows (and be prepared for an optional extra surprise in one of this weekend's shows):
AT40: The '70s this week presents 5/27/1978
Six songs debuted this week: "Bluer Than Blue" - Michael Johnson (#33) "You're The Love" - Seals & Crofts (#35) "Cheeseburger In Paradise" - Jimmy Buffett (#37) "Oh What A Night For Dancing" - Barry White (#38) "I Was Only Joking" - Rod Stewart (#39) "Stay" - Rufus & Chaka Khan (#40)
Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Running On Empty" - Jackson Browne (#33) "Our Love" - Natalie Cole (#35) "Let's All Chant" - Michael Zager Band (#36) "Do You Believe In Magic" - Shaun Cassidy (#38) "Ego" - Elton John (#39) "Stayin' Alive" - The Bee Gees (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty (#26 to #19) Biggest Dropper: "Two Doors Down" - Dolly Parton (#19 to #36)
Original extras: None
Premiere optional extras: "Follow You, Follow Me" - Genesis (#41) "Grease" - Frankie Valli (#69; highest debut) "More Than A Woman" - The Bee Gees*
* = the surprise I referred to earlier. The Bee Gees' version of "More Than A Woman" was never released as a commercial single thus it never charted in Billboard's Hot 100 (the song was at #25 down from a #21 peak on the Radio & Records chart that week). This must be the first time ever Premiere chose a non-Hot 100 charting song as an op extra.
AT40: The '80s this week presents 5/28/1988:
Four songs debuted this week: "Mercedes Boy" - Pebbles (#34) "Under The Milky Way" - The Church (#37) "New Sensation" - INXS (#38) "When We Kiss" - Bardeux (#39)
Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Prove Your Love" - Taylor Dayne (#26) "One Good Reason" - Paul Carrack (#28) "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" - Billy Ocean (#34) "Promise Me" - The Cover Girls (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Dirty Diana" - Michael Jackson (#29 to #17) Biggest Dropper: "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" - Whitney Houston (#19 to #33)
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "You're The Inspiration" - Chicago "Rock Me Amadeus" - Falco
Premiere optional extras: "Lost In You"- Rod Stewart (#45) "Hands To Heaven" - Breathe (#50) "Make Me Lose Control" - Eric Carmen (#54) "Sign Your Name" - Terence Trent D'Arby (#72; highest debut)

I found out that a station in Halifax airs both the 70s and 80s shows on the weekends! It's so nice to hear Casey on the radio again! 'You're The One That I Want' is #3 on their 70s show right now.
Makes me homesick for the mid 90s when I used to listen to him. :( I wish they'd start airing 90s shows.

Will you settle for 1988 as close enough? ;) May 28, 1988 40 36 Pretty Poison - Nighttime (36) 39 -- Bardeux - When We Kiss (36) 38 -- INXS - New Sensation (3) 37 -- The Church - Under the Milky Way (24) 36 38 Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning (17) 35 35 E.U. - Da Butt (35)34 -- Pebbles - Mercedes Boy (2) 33 19 Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1) LDD: Chicago "You're the Inspiration" from Gina in Brooklyn, NY to Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retten, whose 1984 Olympic performance inspired her to take part in gymnastics, and in the process, overcome her birth defect of spina bifida32 39 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me (2) 31 31 Glass Tiger - I'm Still Searching (31)Flashback Extra: Rod Stewart "Lost in You"30 37 Poison - Nothin' But a Good Time (6) 29 33 Cheap Trick - The Flame (1) 28 32 Al B. He did the same thing last year on the 6/25 show, where he didn't even mention the following week's "Triathalon of Rock & Roll" July 4 special. Wonder if the fact that he already knew he was leaving the show by this point meant that he didn't have to promote AT40's own special shows at all? In addition, he plugged his own "America's Top 10" during the credits at the end...
- LOTS of rock n' soul sounds in the first half of the show...then you get to the Top 20, and out come the pop songs - with Hall & Oates, to boot. ;)
- INXS were coming into the countdown this week with "New Sensation", yet their previous single "Devil Inside", which was #4 just four weeks ago on 4/30, is not only nowhere in the countdown, it isn't even one of this week's four droppers...meaning it fell so fast that it dropped before this. :o
- What did y'all think of Casey's coverage of "Da Butt" as a dance sensation?
- "I Still Believe" received the standard jingle this week, but "Make it Real" and "Piano in the Dark" received the softer one.
- Extra "Hands to Heaven" was cut in half.
- #1 on the Country chart: "18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses" by Kathy Mattea
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Together Forever"
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Just Got Paid" by Johnny Kemp
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael

- Casey had a bit of that "earlier 80s" tone in his voice during the show this week. Or was it really the "getting over being sick" tone? I can't really tell ... though during the first hour he did sound similar to how he voiced the shows we've had so far this year from 1980, IMO.
- "Eyes Without a Face" received the standard jingle this week.
- Until now, I'd thought that the 84-86 closing theme always ended in a fade-out like it usually does. WIDL proved me wrong on that, as they played the closing all the way to the end.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Honey, Open That Door" by Ricky Skaggs
- #1 on the Album chart: Footloose soundtrack
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Dance Hall Days"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Hear it For the Boy"

Ah poopystick! The 1984 one would have been fun to hear!
Regarding the 1970s chart, I noticed April Wine, from Halifax, where I live now, fell off and I decided to see how big they were in the US because they are regarded as one of Canada's big groups from the 70s and 80s. That song that fell off was their first Top 40 US hit and only one until in 1979 when they got their second. Their third came in 1981 and that was it.

The 1984 one would have been fun to hear! It was! 1984 is definitely a favorite of mine!

(1) 3: THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE β ROBERTA FLACK (1) 2: OH GIRL β THE CHI-LITES (1) 1: IβLL TAKE YOU THERE β THE STAPLE SINGERS (1)This is the first time I heard AT40: The 70's on June 5, 2011 on WLS 94.7 True Oldies in Chicago. It airs Sunday mornings from 7 AM to 10 AM. For the record: This is the 3rd. incarnation of any AT40 show that the 94.7 FM station in Chicago carried! The first was from June 1987 until October 1991 for the old AT40 (first with Casey Kasem from June 1987 until he quit in August 1988 then with Shadoe Stevens from August 1988 until the 94.7 Chicago station - then Top 40 WYTZ - dropped the show in October 1991 as the 94.7 station switched to carry a simucast of sister AM station WLS Talkradio 890. The second was from Feb. 2001 until September 2001 when the 94.7 station was 1980's/Hot AC THE ZONE as the station carried Sunday mornings the 3 hour 1980's American Top 40 Flashback show (which started with the 2nd. hour, just like some 1978 and 1979 4 hour AT40's have to start that way for AT40: The 70's) but in September 2001 a few days after the 9/11/2001 tragic events the ZONE 94.7 switched from 1980's/Hot AC to Alternative/New Rock and dropped the AT40 Flashback show. Now I'm glad AT40: The 70's has a Chicago affiliate - it's 3rd. time the charm on Chicago's WLS FM 94.7 True Oldies station. At least it's better than listening on Sunday (even on KISS 103.5 FM Chicago) the current American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest.

OBSERVATION:
I am sure this has happened many times, but two songs on the 6/11/1977 countdown had "dirty words" in the original LP lyrics that had to be "bleeped" or used replacement lyrics:
EAGLES -- "Life In The Fast Lane" STEVE MILLER BAND -- "Jet Airliner"
