Adam Duritz sounds really engaged as a vocalist on what I've heard from this covers album thus far.
He actually recorded most of his vocal bits during a challenging part of his recent life last year when he was getting off of his antidepressants, one by one, and had some apparent terrifying withdrawals at times. So we can probably expect to hear some particularly emotionally poignant performances.
Counting Crows have long been one of my favorite bands. I thought their previous studio album "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings" was musically and lyrically strong............but Duritz's vocals, at least in the studio versions, just didn't stand up to previous efforts (with the exception of the frightening "Cowboys", and the beautiful "Washington Square" and "When I Dream of Michelangelo"). A lot of the time he just wasn't attaining those cathartic highs like he achieved on "Recovering The Satellites" and "This Desert Life".
I think Duritz is back at the top of his game as a studio vocalist.

There's no arguing few people are ever as emotionally engaged in their songs as Duritz has been in his prime. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't agree more. I'm just saying that, while in every live performance I've seen of about every track from "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings" Duritz is on fire................many of the vocal tracks on the album couldn't help but sound a bit restrained and sterile to me. I'll give you an example. If you've seen live performances of "Hanging Tree" on YouTube or in concert, you'd know Duritz really seethes angst into that part of the song where he says "She says, 'Good morning!'. i don't know what to say. She says 'Good evening!'. I wish that YOU'D GO HOMMMEEEEE!" Duritz really channels the gravity of the situation live. On the studio version, however, he just sort of gently hurries through the lyric, without ever punctuating it. Same with lamenting the thought of freezing to death on your own, or the madness toward the very end where the protagonist claims he got a pair of wings for his birthday and he'll take a test flight this evening. Live, he's unparalleled. In studio, he just comes across surprisingly flat there. "Insignificant" and "1492" are other good examples. I blame the latter in part due to the "loudness wars" dilemma plaguing the song's production. But still, Duritz just doesn't translate the disintegration nearly as well in that studio version as he does in a live setting. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS
