THE WEEKND ANNOUNCES DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC, PREPS ‘TRILOGY’ ALBUMAfter building buzz with his mixtapes and touring with Drake, The Weeknd is taking the next step in his career. The Canadian singer-songwriter and his XO label have entered a deal with Universal Republic. His first release will be Trilogy on November 13. The project will feature mixed and mastered versions of songs off his popular mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. Additionally, unreleased material will be included on the album, with “Wicked Games” serving as the first official release. The Weeknd will launch a fall tour on September 21 in Chicago, with shows scheduled for Hollywood, Miami, Atlanta, New York, and his hometown of Toronto on November 2 and 3. www.rap-up.com/2012/09/11/the-weeknd-announces-deal-with-universal-republic-preps-trilogy-album

It's nice to see him getting signed to a major label.

I think this guy has a great career ahead of him if managed correctly. He's too endearing not to. I do wonder where he'll take his major debut, if there will be any real progression, or if we'll be treated to the usual. He's gotten a lot of exposure on his own, so it might be in his best interest to mix it up a little.
Either way, I'm most likely seeing him live at his upcoming Charlotte show. Hope he drops some of the new material.

Liked his 3 mixtapes/EPs. Didn't listen as much as I would like to (yet) but I definitely love "High For This" and also his part on Drake's "Crew Love" so looking forward to this very much! :)

I think he's built up a following in a manner similar to the way Frank Ocean did. The major difference is that The Weeknd basically completely avoids creating a public image, which creates an interesting sense of mystery around him but may prevent people from feeling a kind of attachment to him as an artist (which seems to be crucial to selling albums).

CAN'T WAIT!
I still feel House of Balloons owns the two mixtapes that came after, although both are still good in their own right. To me House of Balloons is revolutionary and its influence can be directly traced to radio mainstays ranging from Usher to Drake. I can't think of a debut mixtape that's changed the face of R&B music any more than his has. I feel that the attachment his fans feel towards him has to do with how distinct his style is and his niche at creating truly atmospheric and moody songs. I like Frank Ocean as much as the next guy but I definitely feel that Abel has more of a sound that's truly his own.
Also: The Weeknd will be featured on Wiz Khalifa's upcoming album so we have an additional new song to look forward to there as well.

Good to see him get signed. House of Balloons could've damn well been his debut album IMO, it was that good. "What You Need" (with that subtle Rock The Boat sample) and "The Morning" still get heavy rotation on my playlists.

I really feel like I have had my fill of The Weeknd. For the most part, his albums are removed from my phone and there was a relatively high burn rate for me, with a few exceptions. I feel like Frank Ocean is much more of an artist with more to offer than sleazy, louche tales of druggy insouciance. That's not to say I did not enjoy The Weeknd's albums for what they were. I just feel like, for me, this news is coming a little late.

Frank Ocean has more to say as far as content goes, IMO, because he's a storyteller at heart. Many of The Weeknd's songs evoke a similar feeling and seem more emotionally-driven than anything, but each Frank Ocean track has the potential to be different based on the way he lyrically paints a picture. Both talented artists, but they're different in terms of expression.

A year ago I would've said I was a bigger fan of his than Franks. I have to agree that his music has a high-burn rate, but I'm hoping he can put together something refreshing to renew my interest in him.

I haven't really listened to any of his other music, but I heard "Wicked Games" a couple months ago and it's just perfection.

'Wicked Games' was already confirmed as the lead single, but turns out the version being released is a slightly modified version. Listen here. Not drastically different, but I think I'll stick with the original anyway.

The Weeknd Reveals 'Trilogy' Tracklist, Debuts 'Wicked Games' Video by Erika Ramirez, N.Y. | October 18, 2012 12:05 EDT
The Weeknd isn't as camera shy as he used to be. In the obscure black and white viral for "Wicked Games," the singer-songwriter croons directly at the lens.
"Wicked Games," originally from his first mixtape "House of Balloons" (2011), has been remastered for the release of "Trilogy."
The three-part project, to debut on Nov. 13 through Universal Republic, will contain material from Weeknd's past three mixtapes ("House of Balloons," Thursday," and "Echoes of Silence") and bonus tracks including "Valerie," "Twenty Eight," and "Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)."
"Trilogy" will also include a music video for "The Zone," featuring Drake. Check out the tracklist for the 30-song project below.
"House of Balloons"
1. High for This 2. What You Need 3. House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls 4. The Morning 5. Wicked Games 6. The Party & The After Party 7. Coming Down 8. Loft Music 9. The Knowing 10. Twenty Eight
"Thursday"
1. Lonely Star 2. Life of the Party 3. Thursday 4. The Zone (Feat. Drake) 5. The Birds, Pt. 1 6. The Birds, Pt. 2 7. Gone 8. Rolling Stone 9. Heaven or Las Vegas 10. Valerie
"Echoes of Silence"
1. D.D. 2. Montreal 3. Outside 4. XO / The Host 5. Initiation 6. Same Old Song (Feat. Juicy J) 7. The Fall 8. Next 9. Echoes of Silence 10. Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)
This is ridiculous... 27 of the 30 songs are already available for free, legally. What incentive is there to buy them? They're remastered? Wow that's a huge deal... not.

Who's actually going to purchase this? A three-disc set is likely to carry a heft price tag... and for songs that fans have already had for over a year.

When I first read about this, I thought he was actually gonna release each mixtape in a package as a trilogy. He's probably gonna cut out some amazing tracks from some of them because they're all pretty amazing. IMO, he should've just recorded an entire new album.

"Wicked Games" is on iTunes along with a pre-order for the explicit version of Trilogy and the price is only $9.99.
I think this might end up selling decently at digital retailers if it stays at that price but I would be shocked if they sell the physical for that much considering it'll be 3 discs.

99% of the material has already been given away for free so they need some kind of incentive to get people to consider buying the physical product (i.e. a lower price than expected).

^They're good to have, but they don't hold a light to the original material on his mixtapes. For me, House of Balloons was the best mixtape.

Surprisingly, this is #3 on iTunes :O It's the second highest new release behind the standard and deluxe versions of Take Me Home.
