They care because it would be a historic #1. What makes it historic? It will be the first Korean language #1? Wow, that's history.

Why do they care so much? Are'nt we all obsessed bout rankings and charts? I know that we are, we are supposed to be. But why is Billboard? And why this song?

I mean, foreign language songs don't become hits here in the US. When was does, it's kind of a big deal. When one hits #1, it's kind of a historical moment.

I think it was one of the biggest ever, as far as fatalities, even to this day.

I don't understand why there is so much hate for GS due to the foreign language. If the rest of the world can listen to "American" music, why can't we handle one song?

Where's the hate for foreign language?
Seems to me that American audiences don't react in mass numbers to foreign language - or instrumental songs - because lyrics (even inane ones) create a relatable psychological experience. Its part of the culture.

"Macarena" wasn't all foreign language, though= primarily the chorus. I haven't paid much attention- does "Gangnam Style" have English lyrics?

English translation
Oppa is Gangnam style Gangnam style
A girl who is warm and humanle during the day A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes A girl with that kind of twist
I’m a guy A guy who is as warm as you during the day A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down A guy whose heart bursts when night comes That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable Yes you, hey, yes you, hey Beautiful, loveable Yes you, hey, yes you, hey Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all A sensable girl like that
I’m a guy A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable Yes you, hey, yes you, hey Beautiful, loveable Yes you, hey, yes you, hey Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby I’m a man who knows a thing or two On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby I’m a man who knows a thing or two
You know what I’m saying Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style

So, a lot more foreign than "Macarena." :) Call me clairvoyant, but Psy may only land this one big hit.

I always think throwing around the term "one hit wonder" on a current (or soon to be current) #1 hit is premature.
However, this is being billed as and viewed as a novelty hit

^Why I didn't say "one-hit wonder." ;) Yes, it is being compared to "Macarena" and such.

The Macarena folks are not technically one-hit wonders either since they charted multiple times (albeit with the same song)

As discussed before, that depends on one's definition of "one-hit wonder." For some, it's having one BIG hit (whether a No. 1, top 10) and then no more. For others, it's simply charting on the Hot 100 with just one single (or perhaps just the top 40), etc.

In this case charting several times with variations of the same song could be construed as one-hit song I suppose (there was the remix, the original and the Christmas version as the bigger ones)

The mix version was the hit. The original (without the Bayside Boys) was top 40

Billboard.com:
Switching gears to the top 10 of the Digital Songs chart, One Direction's "Live While We're Young" comes crashing in at No. 1 with 341,000 downloads sold. It's the third-largest debut sales week for a digital song by a group, outpaced only by Maroon 5's "Payphone" (493,000) and the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (464,000 in 2009).
But 1D isn't the only big bow this week, as the entire top three are new arrivals.
Taylor Swift's latest single "Red" lands at No. 2 with 312,000. It's the title track from her upcoming album, due out Oct. 22, and is the third pre-release single from the set. It starts a bit larger than its last early single, "Begin Again," which launched a week ago at No. 1 with 299,000.
At No. 3, Adele's title theme song from the James Bond film "Skyfall" debuts with 261,000 after a little more than three days of sales in the tracking week (which ended on Sunday night).
PSY's "Gangnam Style" slips 2-4 with 257,000 (down 13%), Maroon 5's "One More Night" drops 4-5 with 167,000 (down 8%) and Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" falls 5-8 with 149,000 (down 11%).
Ke$ha's "Die Young" tumbles 3-7 with 138,000 (down 27%), fun.'s "Some Nights" moves 6-8 with 129,000 (down 8%) and Rihanna's "Diamonds" dips 7-9 with 108,000 (down 18%). Alex Clare's "Too Close" rounds out the top 10, descending 8-10 with 102,000 (down 12%). Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.31 million downloads, up 1% compared with last week (23.05 million) and 13% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (20.59 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 1.032 billion, up 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (972.33 million).
