I mean I know the era is just starting, but I predicted this to be a mess when I first heard she was going independent. For someone who has always treated their career like a hobby, the music is really gonna have to stick when she doesn't have a major machine doing the legwork that she typically doesn't do on her own. Fortunately for her, she has a big social media presence, and she's still very likable and relevant to her audience, so I could see this going either way. I just want this album to be better than Code Dead.

Pretty good song. It is missing something from it. The production kinda gives me 'Smoking Cigarettes' teas. I heard' Smoking Cigarettes' in it as well and thought I was going crazy. |

Monica's only market is UAC. And it's a format that tends to be very friendly to independent artists (especially one's with name value in the R&B community like she has). She can easily score a hit there, she just has to send the damn song.
But let's be honest, her promo was sloppy as hell when she was on a major, who knows how it will be now that she's on her own.

When was her last Top 10 at Urban AC? Several years ago at least (looks like "Love All Over Me" in 2010 was her last Top 10 on the Billboard Adult R&B chart). That coupled with them not even sending the song to radio is the reason it’s not doing anything. I agree that her being indie will have little impact on how it does at Urban AC. Indie acts have gone #1 there plenty of times.
I can see her pulling a Mariah and having her biggest Urban AC hit in years even if she’s had better material since now that she’ll probably focus her attention there instead of still aiming for mainstream success like the last couple albums.

It’s not mentioned often that her first SEVEN singles were consecutive top-10 Hot 100 hits and top-3 R&B. However, she never had a blockbuster album which I think is why the mainstream success she did have is regarded more as a footnote than a highlight of the 90s.
