There's no irony in folks here having a negative reaction to songs with positive words and messages. Some of you need this music. Sorry but... because we don't praise this song we're automatically bitter irl? My friends would probs disagree with you on that one.

I feel the exact opposite. I'm not connecting to these songs about being a struggling woman and becoming a new me... because I'm not a woman (yes, really) and I'm quite content with myself at the moment.

lol...were people on here actually doubting the fact that you're "...not a woman (yes, really)" Jazzy???
First people wanted her to write songs other than diamonds and pearls, and love. She is writing about self empowerment (NEW DAY & GIRL ON FIRE ) and where she stands as an artist (BRAND NEW ME). And now they want love songs again.
I'm like...let the girl write her music. There are obviously a lot of love songs on the album....by default.
How about people actually rate music based on the music, and not it NOT being a single. It's not a single. It's just an album track released as a Promo single.

I love it. First time, I heard the live record and now the studio version takes it to another level. The production is interesting also. It is like old Alicia with a new spin which make it so damn good.

I've heard four songs so far and holy crap this material is all boring and mediocre. I am not excited about this album at all, the first time I can say that when it comes to Alicia.

I think the message behind the song is this is her art and I can admire that. Hell even if I didn't care for the song, I could appreciate the thought put into it. There is a lot of jumping into it being a single and the purpose of the song is being push toward the side. It would great for her to have a huge hit but I rather an artist first then numbers afterward. I know that's not the reality of the industry but I mention before, music is becoming a second nature in the industry. It is so driven on what can be a hit and artists are being box into releasing a rehash of what's hot now.
Back to the song, I love that her voice is flowing across the production at the beginning of the track. It is really produced beautifully. It has a heavenly sound to it.

Well said @rican. Peter Edge (current CEO of RCA & the guy that signed Alicia to J Records 14 years ago) made it very clear in numerous Press interviews that Alicia Keys will always be Alicia Keys. He won't allow her to be changed and manufactured into a Pop starlet just to please the current market.
She's a Songwriter & R&B artist, not a made-for Hot 100 artist. And yes, she does dabble in current genres and collaborate with current artist to keep up with the current market, but she ALWAYS keeps it real and stays HER. It's a sad sad state in music when a song is down right ridiculed just because it's not: 1. Electro/Pop 2. It's doesn't contain sexuall lyrics 3. And it doesn't take people to the damn dance floor.

But this an Alicia Keys R&B piano ballad. What, just because it doesn't conform to what most R&B tracks on radio sound like, it aint R&B?
Yes, it sounds current, but it is still Alicia Keys & it is and has ALWAYS been her take on R&B. She's an acclaimed pianist. (Refer back to her vast catalogue containing her R&B piano ballads)
And regarding the R&B Radio track everybody wants....it's coming.

I think you and i have a different opinion on what a r&b jam sounds like and that's quite okay but the lack of comprehension isn't.

As is your opinion. I think your yearning for an "R&B jam" where it obviously isn't is just as uncomprehendable. This is a R&B piano ballad. But you are free to call it what you want.
I'll leave it at that.

How many more clichΓ©s does she have to string together before some of y'all realize she, for starters, needs to put the pen down? In any event, she's done worse. Some of you need this music. All I need in this life is Allah and a cup of some lean, KiKi.

I am a woman and have certainly have had a few moments of epiphany in my lifetime but this song is like a damn sedative. Jam, piano ballad, whatever it is or was aiming to be, this song is not hitting it on any mark for me.
I loathed "Doesn't Mean Anything" and "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" took a very long time to grow on me, but I ended up really liking most of The Element of Freedom anyway. So I still hold out some hope that I'll enjoy this album, even though the first two singles have left little impression on me.

I like this. I do find it a little interesting that she is releasing a song like this just as a magazine with an interview with her in which she addresses the whole Swizz Beatz/Mashonda mess is hitting newsstands. Things that make you go hmmm... There's no irony in folks here having a negative reaction to songs with positive words and messages. Some of you need this music.

This is growing on me. It's still probably my second least favorite on the album, but I do like it significantly more than "Girl On Fire". It's just disappointing to me because I actually really like the album, and the first two singles are the only two on the album that I don't really like much.

And FIRE WE MAKE is right behind at #42.
Wouldn't mind this becoming a HUGE Urban AC radio hit. She did produce it herself, and it is autobiographical.
One of my absolute favorites from the new album, with One Thing, That's When I Knew, Fire We Make and 101.
