Billboard Top 40 - Top 100 of 2012 (Official)

Happy new year! What?…Too soon? Billboard doesn't think so.

The Billboard chart year has ended. The year began with the issue dated December 3, 2011 and ended with this week's charts, published in the issue dated November 24, 2012. The usual disclaimer…Billboard's year-end rankings only count spins for weeks spent in the top 40. Spins below #40 and recurrent play are not counted. This means the spin totals you see here will be a bit lower than what you'll see in the Mediabase year-end rankings.

The discounting of recurrent play also means that there's another close call for #1. Last year, LMFAO and Pitbull were separated by a, mere, 635 spins (LMFAO won the top spot). This year, the margin is over 3000 spins. However, if Ellie dropped off a week earlier, or Rihanna stayed on a week longer, we'd be seeing a different song in the #1 spot. It was that close. Only counting the top 40 makes the math easier, too. My projections have tended to be pretty accurate. Last year (pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=pop&thread=111579&page=1), I only had two pairs of songs transposed. I'm gunning for a perfect score, this time. :)

Keep your eyes on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz. The year-end top 50 (and the rest of the year-end charts) should be available there in the coming weeks. For now...

Not to discredit Cerebro's work, which I do appreciate, but +1 to this.

Last year I compiled a chart counting total spins per stations from the charts falling within the calendar year (I would like to do exactly January 1 to December 31 but can't unfortunately) and I'll most likely do it again this year so stay tuned if interested :)

Surprised me, too. Rihanna had spent the entire year as the clear frontrunner. That ended the first week of November, which was Ellie's final week on the chart. Had Ellie lost another 22 spins (yes, 22), she'd have gone recurrent:

I mean, it causes plays to be skewed to badly. Look at "Lights" at number one. All because it took her so long to finally take off. Put that up against a song that has done really well in recurrent airplay, such as "Feel So Close." You also have songs by big artists who took off so quickly, so they don't get the advantage of a natural climb. The may only get 20 weeks in the top 40 while another song gets nearly 30 because it took them nearly 10 weeks to take off. I really do not like the fact that Billboard completely ignores recurrency.

They do that for the Hot 100 year-end chart too, don't they?

Correct. To quote, directly, from the page in Billboard's 2011 year-end issue explaining how the charts are tabulated:

The rankings for BDS-and SoundScan-based music charts reflect airplay or sales during the weeks that titles appeared on a relevant chart during the tracking period.

And...

Sales or airplay registered before or after a title's chart run aren't considered in these standings.

And the bit relevant to the Mainstream Top 40 chart:

Rankings for year-end airplay charts are based on accumulated BDS-monitored plays or audience impressions, depending on each list's weekly methodology, for each week a song appears on the chart.

All the acts in the top 20 have multiple chart entries to their credit. "Anything Could Happen" hasn't made much of a dent, yet, leaving "Lights" to do all the heavy lifting. Ellie ended up just missing the top 20.

I'm, quite certain, it won't. Based on the cut-off date for the 2011 chart year, "Party Rock Anthem", thankfully, went recurrent the week that the 2012 chart year started, so it's ineligible for inclusion.

Mediabase's only rule (that I'm aware of) is that a track would need to have spent, at least, one week as a current in order to be eligible to rank on the year-end chart.

And, yes, I do plan on posting my Mediabase year-end projections once the chart year closes. ;)

Not as exhausting as you'd think. The past few years, I have kept spreadsheets for, both, Mediabase and Billboard. I just plug in the spin counts from the weekly charts, and Excel does all the heavy lifting.

The Mediabase chart year, usually, starts the first Sunday after Thanksgiving and ends the Sunday before Thanksgiving. (2012 started with the Sunday, 11/27/11 published chart). This year is odd, however, as Thanksgiving is early and there is, nearly, a full week of November, afterwards. Because of that, it's looking like this Sunday, 11/25, will be the last chart for 2012. That means the 2012 chart year would be 53 weeks. Looking ahead, 2013 will be back to 52 weeks (and end the weekend before Thanksgiving, 11/24/13). I'll be posting the chart some time next week. I'll tweak the numbers if I have the cut-off date wrong.

Mediabase's only rule (that I'm aware of) is that a track would need to have spent, at least, one week as a current in order to be eligible to rank on the year-end chart.

And, yes, I do plan on posting my Mediabase year-end projections once the chart year closes. ;)

Simple. It hadn't gone recurrent yet.

Note that on last year's rankings...

...it only spent 3 weeks on the chart before going recurrent. Those 3 weeks made it eligible for inclusion and, thus, every spin detected counted towards the 2011 year-end chart.

The Mediabase chart year, usually, starts the first Sunday after Thanksgiving and ends the Sunday before Thanksgiving. (2012 started with the Sunday, 11/27/11 published chart). This year is odd, however, as Thanksgiving is early and there is, nearly, a full week of November, afterwards. Because of that, it's looking like this Sunday, 11/25, will be the last chart for 2012. That means the 2012 chart year would be 53 weeks. Looking ahead, 2013 will be back to 52 weeks (and end the weekend before Thanksgiving, 11/24/13). I'll be posting the chart some time next week. I'll tweak the numbers if I have the cut-off date wrong.
