The continued success of Kidz Bop seems a little odd to me. If somebody wants a compilation collecting the biggest hits of the moment, why not purcahse the latest Now! album, rather than sub-par covers of the same songs performed by young people with little discernible vocal talent? Is there a massive gulf in pricing between the two? I don't know if this is the exact reason, but I know for several songs they alter some of the lyrics to more "kid friendly" versions, so maybe the purpose is to make parents feel like they can make a no-brainer purchase. Plus, the Kidz Bop songs always sounded really karaoke to me so I always thought of them as being more like karaoke CDs for birthday parties or something.

There is a huge market for Kidz Bop. It is not for collectors or for regular radio listeners or chart watchers or whatever.
The audience is kids old enough to appreciate music but not old enough to digest the adult content lyrics that pop up in most of these songs.
Plus they are fun and peppy and set to a beat tsuitable for this age group

My nephews adore KidzBop-they are more child-friendly versions and go over well at little kid birthday parties. I used to hate the series, but seeing my nephews bop around to some of the songs has warmed my cold dead heart

Nice that Alicia got #1, albeit with much lower sales. This reminds me of when Janet's "Damita Jo" and "20 Y.O." both debuted and peaked at #2 even though they sold more than the album that did hit #1, "Discipline" (which sold over 180K first week).

I'm glad Alicia got #1, and that she ended up doing slightly better than the high end of HITS' second projection. Christina's fall looks harsher on paper than what it actually is. Her second week drop was really soft due to Black Friday, so the third week sales balance that out. Phillip Phillips had a pretty soft fall, that's nice to see. Also nice to see Miguel return to the top 50!

I do wish Alicia had powered up to 200K, but overall sales aren't that bad. There is always a pretty big dip after Black Friday.

4 Xmas albums in the Top 10.
Rod Stewart came in a bit below estimates.

I believe that makes it 6 weeks in the T2 for Red.
For BB charts dated 2012: Adele 22 (I think), Mumford/Zac Brown 4, Lionel/Whitney 3
Which I'm not claiming as a record; I'm just observing its relative longevity.

How long are we gonna gonna use the "barely-any-promo" reasoning? Aguilera performed on The Voice three times, as well as the AMAs. And, she's done numerous interviews, appears on The Voice weekly, multiple times. The general music-buying public likely is aware she has an album out.

Sure she's done more promo than Madonna and Britney combined, but she still left it all for the album release week which was too late as "Your Body" wasn't even a sizable enough hit.

^She performed on The Voice twice in the album's second week. :) I'm just saying there's really no reason to debate the reasons- the music-buying public just is not that into her right now.

But wouldn't The Voice have the same audience, for the most part? So multiple performances wouldn't really affect it that much?

The Voice's audience usually stays within a certain range- but, it is one of the top-rated programs on TV. Appearances on a handful of nighttime or daytime shows with a lot less audience still wouldn't match the ratings that The Voice gets.

I am stilll confused by everyone's idea of a massive promo campaign. I just have never considered 2-3 performances the week of an album release to equal a massive, extensive, extended promo campaign to promote a lead single and album. But, I guess I am wrong? Like, if you guys were making a promo schedule for an artist you would schedule 2-3 performances the date of the album release, sit back, and call it a day?
I guess I think more traditional pop star and think of Kelly performing MKIA like, literally 30 times everywhere or the extensive promo campaigns lasting for literally months before an album release for other pop stars. But, I guess months of extensive non-stop promo and double digit amounts of performances really don't do much and 2-3 week of release is the most anyone should do? It is an interesting concept and maybe my ideas about promo are outdated. It will be interesting to see what Gaga does as the next major pop star release. Or Katy. Like, I wonder if they will never perform their lead singles or do anything until the actual cd release.

Red is now trailing pretty far behind Speak Now.

Most likely due to her struggling at country. Country is going to be what sells her album, not pop. Pop will sell mostly singles.

^If Bionic couldn't go Gold and since Lotus debuted with less sales than Bionic, I doubt it. Of course it all depends on the performance of the 2nd and 3rd singles...

For someone coming off of a flop era, Xtina needed to step up the promo. As in getting off of her couch in her mansion and doing some leg work. First stop should have been radio stations. The Voice committments and co-parenting would have restrained her a bit but the way this played out it was liked she was under house arrest.
Had she done half of what Pink and RCA put together for her current era, I think things would have turned out differently.
