I remember hear that he didn't like it Home and that wasn't the style he wanted. I hope he changed his opinion, because Gone, gone, gone has some similarities. Anyway Phillip has some advantage, people know more or less his style during AI, he wasn't the best singer (in fact he was very far of that) but people like him (and it's more than being handsome, there are a good bunch of handsome guys who get an early elimination on Idol). Other contestants have the problem with the disconnection between what they sang on Idol and what they do after Idol. Adam Lambert is a perfect example, he was always a polarized contestant, but his ballads were very praised, i always thought that a ballad would work a lot better for him than what he is doing.
Phillip was very lucky that the olympics give Home another live. Home even wasn't a top 40 hit on radio before the Olympics, and thanks to that it make a triunfant comeback to the charts. Not only peakin gin the top 10 but having a long run on charts. The song was a success before the Olympics (it sold really well) but after that pave the way for the album and this single.
The fact that Gone gone gone is a good single, can make a really good impact in his career. The album is selling well, and this song is on the verge of making an impact (Idol will help that for sure). If the song end doing well (i hope so) and he is able to make another hit (even a minor one), he will be in an excelent place to avoid the second album problems than most male idol contestant have. And with time he can adjust his personal taste to what is working on charts. Maybe this songs weren't his personal preferences, that the truth is they are not only working, but they suit his voice perfectly

PHILLIPS*PHILLIP GONE, GONE, GONE 16,500 +34% 192,000 (approx)
I really hope he can avoid the 2nd album curse that affects most most male contestants from the show. Aside from Daughtry I can't think of any recent male that didn't have a flop 2nd album. Scotty hasn't put out a 2nd album yet so maybe he'll do ok also.

Even Daughtry's second album wasn't very successful. I mean it wasn't an outright flop, but when you get down to it, Carrie and Kelly are the only two that have ever truly managed more than 1 successful album.

Also clays first album sold 2.7 while his follow up Christmas album sold 1.4

He's said that after a few weeks of playing the song live, he learned to appreciate it, and that he likes it now. I don't blame him really, he's a singer-songwriter and they handed him a song that he had zero input in. It's natural he was uncomfortable at first.

They're definitely gonna give him a lot of publicity when he performs on Idol.
-"Home" single certified 4X Platinum with plaque given to him on TV. -"The World From The Side of The Moon" album certified Platinum with plaque given to him on TV. -"Home" becoming the biggest selling American Idol single of all time.

Yeah it's been a loooooooong time since they could truly tout the past season's winner as being a big success, so you can bet they'll play it up big time.

Given the weekly sales rates of both, by the time Phillip does perform on the Idol stage again, Home will be the best-selling AI song ever.
Was GGG used on Idol last night or does that not start until the Top 10?

Was GGG used on Idol last night or does that not start until the Top 10? Phillip is performing next Thursday (3/14), so it looks like he's just one week short of surpassing Kelly's "Stronger". I think the 4x platinum plaque would be more than enough for Idol to brag about. They could still brag about Phillip joining Kelly as the only 2 Idol alumni to have ever gotten a 4x platinum single, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if they embellished a tad about Home being the biggest AI song ever anyway, but the 4x certification for Home and the album being gold gives them plenty to brag about as it is.

Maybe in US Home will be the biggest selling song, but worldwide Stronger is def bigger. When I think about a song I like to judge how big it's that song loking also at the worldwide impact. I like Gone Gone Gone more than Home .

I don't think "Home" was sent anywhere outside of North America. I think they're trying for it in Europe soon, though... So obviously "Stronger" is the bigger worldwide hit. Not to mention it's a made-for-radio song by a big pop star, vs. an alternative-ish song by a new artist...

I did not want to underestimate the performance of the song, I just wanted to point out that when we appreciate a song we should take into account the global sales. Just my opinion. "Home" achievments are really great, but let's keep it real. STIUTK was not very radio friendly and Gotye was not a big artist, but that song is a huge hit.

GGG is now #36 and #88 on iTunes. Album is #20 and #27. And the West Coast hasn't seen the show yet. ;0
If you combined the popularity bars of the two versions of GGG the song is actually #18 on iTunes overall.

The fact that this is the boot song is going to give it a boost every Thursday for the next 8 or 9 weeks. Now it's #25 (and #80) on iTunes. This has to make a big splash on iTunes before CHR gives it a chance.

This is now the #10 song on iTunes (you have to combined the popularity bars of both versions of the song).

Which is crazy because I thought for sure he would be a flop winner in terms of commercialness.

I didn't think much of his prospects during the season, but when I heard Home on the finale, I thought he could go somewhere with more material like that, so long as it wasn't "too" soundalike. I didn't think Home would stick around as long as it did, but ironically I think it helped Phillip that Pop didn't latch onto it right away and instead it was massive when his album dropped.
I wonder if the same sort of thing will happen with GGG. Its airplay is building but Top 40 isn't exactly all over it yet. I'm sure Interscope could *ahem* promote GGG a little more to Pop if they wanted, but I think they might be content to let it build on HAC and in sales until it's too big for CHR to ignore. I hope they don't think that will always work with Phillip, though.

This is doing really well on Hot AC and AAA, with the itunes gains i think it will make top 50 on pop soon (well this weeks must be a good amount of songs going recurrent or purged, so it could make an impact pretty soon)

Which is crazy because I thought for sure he would be a flop winner in terms of commercialness. Aside from the Olympics promo he mainly has Mumford and Sons to thank for bringing his folky style back into mainstream popularity. If he had won 2-3 years ago I guarantee he would have been a big flop, but he's coming out at exactly the right time for his style. We are in the middle of a folk revival right now and even CHR is all over the folky stuff at the moment, some of which isn't very poppy at all. So him bringing a poppier folk sound to the table is doing wonders for his mainstream success.

We are in the middle of a folk revival right now and even CHR is all over the folky stuff at the moment, some of which isn't very poppy at all. So him bringing a poppier folk sound to the table is doing wonders for his mainstream success. Phillip's style on the show wasn't really Mumford-esque overall, though, it was more inspired by the Dave Matthews Band. He did do one Damien Rice song which could be considered folkish, I guess. Anyway, if Phillip won two or three seasons earlier, TPTB wouldn't have given him a song that sounded like Home because that sound wasn't as "in" back then. Also at that time Idol still insisted on saddling the winners with adult contemporary cheesfests for coronation songs. Unless it was quality cheese like A Moment Like This or Time of My Life, I agree P² would have been in a very difficult position in terms of single/album sales and getting a foothold on radio, if all summer had gone by after he'd won with no music from him, and then he'd have had to come out with a "real" single two months ahead of his album being released. OTOH, 2-3 years ago, the pop radio landscape was friendlier to Idol males than it is now. But if P² been the umpteenth WGWG trying to break though, he would have been in trouble without a smash like Home to offer (and even then Pop really dragged their feet in embracing it and it feels like the same thing will happen with GGG). Home falling into their laps gave Interscope a direction to take Phillip's other singles that would sound current in 2012-13 while not being musically "out of character" coming from him, either. He really wasn't providing that so much when he was competing on Idol. If he'd won Idol in 2009 or 2010, he still would have been the same DMB-loving guy, a sound that was just as "over" back then as it is now, but TPTB wouldn't have thought to turn to the pop-folk sound that just so happens to suit P² perfectly. It's interesting to think about what they would have done instead if he'd won a few years earlier...his voice isn't right for something like Live Like We're Dying. David Cook's rejects? This is when I wish I had an alternate universe time machine ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif)
