Ooh! This sounds like an elevated, crisper version of her mixtape days. I'm hope she can go the Tinashe route in this season of her life and career - indie, recording what represents her best as an artist and person, and building a community of fans without the mainstream music industry machine trying to control things.
Also, I finished the book and loved it. I witnessed so many of her career events in real time but it was illuminating to get the context from her perspective as well as all the stuff going on in her personal life over the years. As Chappell Roan said "It should be illegal" for teenagers to be signed to record contracts. The only blessing is the statute that go Jo out of her Blackground contract since she signed it at 12.

It's a shame she seems to not really be a fan of Mad Love - well, in her book, she makes it seems like it was made with a substantial amount of compromise, but I think it really is the perfect bridge from her pop style into a more R&B style - because I am revisiting it and it's pretty perfect, outside of the singles, strangely. I Can Only is the best of what the public got to hear, which says a lot (and I think that song is solid.)
Anyway, I am in the final quarter of the book and I.am so impressed with her rawness and vulnerability. So proud of her. Also, just getting around to Porcelain and...WOW. FLAWLESS. That sample...whew. The vocals, the feeling, all of it.

I read the parts in the book as the Tringle + FAB and Fuck Apologies were the compromises with the label but much of the album tracks are more of her own artistry. Songs like Music, Mad Love, I Am, High Heels, Edibles, Reckless, and Clover are straight up everything she stands for as an artist, IMHO. Good Thing is one that I hope she likes cause it's a fave of mine. MNEK was involved, so maybe. |

I wanna go and get a VIP meet and greet ticket if they're offered. I'm not usually interested in meeting my musical idols, but being a fellow 1990 baby with her and reading her book, I would love to just say hi and experience her vibe person to person.

Debating if I should get the ticket. I know I want to catch her live but her Boston stop is on a fucking Wednesday. I go to weekday concerts more often than not and trying to get home from the Moody Center downtown is near impossible (I was almost stranded after the Creed show), but for my faves, it's always worth it. I think when I saw JoJo in Austin it was a Sunday night and it was a rare 35 degrees in Austin. Oh...it was a small stage outdoors. |
