Hello,
Attached you will see a test chart for a bran d n ew ranking covering Dance/Electronic music titled Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, which blends radio audience impressions, digital download sales, streaming data and dance club play.
The 50-position chart, which will rank songs designated as Dance/Electronic, is modeled after the Hot 100, and uses the same formula as that chart (and same radio panel of over 1,200 stations in all formats), with dance/club play added as an additional metric.
PLEASE NOTE: This chart will be an addition to our Dance chart menu and will not replace any existing Dance chart.
Similar to our long-standing Hot 100, and other genre hybrid charts launched recently, the purpose of this chart is to give an all-encompassing look at the most popular dance songs in the country.
The definition of the chart is as follows:
Dance/Electronic Songs: A ranking of the top dance titles based on the Hot 100 formula blending digital download sales, radio airplay, streaming data and reported dance club play by a national panel of DJs. Eligible titles must contain musical elements considered to be the predominant sound and tempo of current dance music in a significant portion of the recording. Dance remixes of established pop, rock, R&B, rap or titles of another genre woul d n ot make the song eligible for the chart, even if the title appears on the Dance Club Play or Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart based on those remixes. While there are songs in every genre that can inspire one to dance, the purpose of this chart is to highlight those songs inherently dance an d n ot easily identifiable as any other genre.
A detailed description of the chart formula is below.
Consider this email a start to an open dialogue about this new Dance chart. We are eager to hear you comments and questions, and are relying on your professional insights for guidance.
We will be sending these test charts each week until launch, which we are targeting for mid-January.
The attached document contains the top 50 titles and also includes a column to the far right indicating ranks for a proposed sub-chart of EDM-only tracks.
If there is anyone else in your company who you feel should be receiving these weekly test charts, please forward their names to us and we will add them to our distribution list.
We look forward to discussing this exciting new chapter on the Dance charts with you!
DANCE/ELECTRONIC SONGS FORMULA:
(same as Hot 100 formula, except for addition of Club Play)
Download Sales and any available physical sales (divide by 12)
Airplay (divide HOH BDS format actual audience impressions for Chart Reporters by 7,500) OR divide number found in Encore by 75 since that number is already divided by 100
On-Demand/Tethered Streaming (divide by 150)
Radio Streaming (divide by 300)
Club Play (divide points by 1.5)
With this formula,
1 Download = 1,000 Audience impressions = 25 radio streams = 12.5 on-demand/tethered streams
8 Downloads = 1 Club Play point
The formula results in a Target Ratio for the Hot 100 (the average of all 100 titles on the chart) of 40-45% sales, 40-45% radio and 15-20% streams, as the number will fluctuate slightly from week to week based on market conditions.
Looking at a few weeks of test data, the ratio for the 50-position Dance/Electronic chart has been averaging 30-35% sales, 25-30% airplay, 25-30% streaming and 10-15% club play. Again, this is the chart average. Depending on the activity, some tracks have more points coming from streaming or club play and others much more coming from sales or airplay.
Below are the streaming services that make up that portion of the chart:
