New Dance/Electronic Songs Chart Launches With Will.i.am & Britney at No. 1

.Billboard expands its coverage of the burgeoning dance scene by launching Dance/Electronic Songs, the first-ever ranking of the nation's top dance songs combining digital download sales (tracked by Nielsen SoundScan), radio airplay (monitored by Nielsen BDS) and streaming data (tracked by BDS from such services as Spotify, Muve, Slacker, Rhapsody, Rdio, MySpace, Xbox Music and Guvera) and reported club play from a select national panel of 140 club DJs.

Outside of club play data, Dance/Electronic Songs will match the methodology applied to Billboard's signature all-genre songs ranking, the Billboard Hot 100. Titles eligible for the chart will be determined based on a song's core sound and tempo, as they have been for our sales-based Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart, which launched in 2010. Dance remixes of titles categorized as pop, rock, R&B, rap or another genre would not make a song eligible for Dance/Electronic Songs, even if the title appears on the Dance Club Songs or Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.



Topping the inaugural Dance/Electronic Songs chart is "Scream & Shout" by will.i.am & Britney Spears, followed by EDM trio Swedish House Mafia with "Don't You Worry Child" at No. 2. The chart's top 10 also features pop/dance tracks from Ne-Yo, Pitbull and Ludacris (with help from David Guetta) and EDM cuts from Calvin Harris and Zedd.



Billboard is also expanding its menu of streaming charts with the launch of Streaming Songs. The chart ranks the top web radio streams and on-demand audio titles from the leading streaming services mentioned above. This ranking represents the streaming portion of the Hot 100's data pool as well as Billboard's other hybrid genre charts for Country, R&B/Hip-Hop, R&B, Rap, Latin, Rock, and now Dance/Electronic Songs.



Where On-Demand Songs, which launched in March 2012, measures consumer-activated audio plays on the above streaming services with on-demand functionality, Streaming Songs includes that data, as well as on-demand streams.



Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz holds the top spot on both Streaming Songs with 1.45 million total streams in the U.S.



Additionally, Billboard is launching the R&B Albums chart, which ranks the week's top R&B-only (non-rap) titles. R&B Albums, a companion chart to the recently-launched R&B Songs, will serve as 25-position distillation of the overall R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.



Rihanna's "Unapologetic," which is bumped down to No. 2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, claims the first-ever No. 1 on R&B Albums, followed by Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire at No. 2 and The Weeknd's "Trilogy" at No. 3. The three titles are the only albums to share top 10 placement on both R&B Albums and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums

I think it better to launch a Non-Demand Songs chart rather than a combination one , the rankings on the two charts are almost the same as each other, 'cause Non-Demand streams far less than On-Demand ones. :)

Okay, I'm sorry. I need an education on this.

I listen to Pandora where you can type in "Bon Jovi" or "Kelly Clarkson" and they play songs tailored to your tastes. Is this passive streaming? Is this On-Demand?

These other sites like Spotify - do they work so that you type in "Carry On" by fun. (for example) and they play that song for you, thus it is On-Demand? I guess I am trying to understand the fundamental differences between active and passive streaming. Does one involve a subscription service and the other free? What does just typing in the song into Youtube classify as? Sorry, old fart here.

You are correct. Passive streaming are sites where the user does not directly choose what song to listen to. On-Demand streaming are sites that let the user choose which songs to listen to.

So Pandora would be passive streaming, while Spotify would be On-Demand. (There is an exception to Spotify, and that would be Spotify radio, in which case would count as passive.)

Now I don't think Pandora is actually monitored right now, but I think it will eventually. It's probably the #1 source for passive streaming, but I think it's harder to track.

YouTube is not tracked because there are so many videos of one song out there that it's near impossible. VEVO used to count as streaming, but I think they stopped tracking it for some reason. My guess is because it's not a reliable source for streaming. (For one, just recently YouTube found out the labels were using software to bump up the view count for VEVO videos. And then there's instances like "Baby" where users just hit refresh a lot of times to up the view count.)

This is a nice chart to have, but it's not that different from On-Demand songs since on-demand streaming is so much more popular than passive streaming. Also, I think we need just a passive streaming chart since passive streaming has a different way of contributing to the Hot 100 than on-demand songs do.

I sent an e-mail to Billboard asking if subscription on-demand streaming is the only one tracked or if both subscription and non-subscription on-demand streaming are tracked, and if so, is streaming weighted somehow. So far, no response. :(

The rankings on the Overall Streaming Songs chart seems nearly the same as on the On-Demand Songs, 'cause Non-Demand streams far less than On-Demand ones. With a Non-Demand one, we can easily tell apart which songs are more listened-to actively or passively

So this is very odd. I guess the On-Demand chart really no longer is the "Third" Hot 100 ingredient. So its usefulness to the big chart lasted less than a year. Confusing. It reminds me of when they had the "Hot Digital TRACKS" chart initially, then a year or so later came out with the new "Hot Digital SONGS" chart... "Tracks" never counted for the Hot 100, though.

I thought I heard or read right. Radio airplay can be manipulated to favor or disfavor one artist or another, and I gather that they have never trusted radio at all, especially following the payola scandals of the 1950s and 1960s.

A chart that is entirely sales-based takes the complexity and manipulation of radio out of the equation. Record companies put the product out there, and it's up to the people---not the radio programmers or program directors---to decide if it's a hit or not.

^ Also, the United States is such a huge country with so many territories, localities and flavors - and has so many damned radio stations - that it makes sense to incorporate airplay into a national chart. That is why smaller countries do not. Many only have a national pop radio station.

A sales based chart tends to skew content to more extreme or youth-based novelty content, and can also be manipulated, as we saw in the 1990s: repressed release dates, huge discount mark-downs, prime retail & iTunes main-page positioning; labels deciding NOT to release a single at all... What happens when the labels stop releasing singles (a la 2001)? Even in our current age, they could easily switch everything over to "Album Only" model.

There is no perfect answer to how to measure song popularity, so a mix is probably the best way to go.

Before 1991 when Billboard brought the HOT100 into the computer age, radio airplay reports were susceptible to manipulation. Billboard had to rely on the honesty and integrity of the Top 40 radio station programmers, who were supposed to rank the most popular songs from 1 to 40, and identify those songs they had added but were below the top 40 (Billboard would also assign airplay points to adds). "Phantom" adds was a common manipulation. Radio stations reported they were playing a song, but actually were not, resulting in a song's point total being inflated.

Now with Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) radio stations cannot manipulate the charts very easily. They may not play a song that is a hit in another part of the country, but no radio station that wants good ratings, will play a song that most listeners hate. Thus including radio airplay in a national music pop chart like the HOT 100 makes sense.

The inclusion of on demand streaming further increases the accuracy of the HOT 100. It only makes sense that a song is popular if someone bothers to stream it! To my mind it is the modern day equivalent of the juke box which had at one time its' own Billboard pop chart in the 1950s (discontinued in 1957 I think).
