why are so many radio stations dropping country music as their chosen format, as there are now only 2,076 stations playing country music down by 10 from this time last year according too the CMA, is the reason because hip-hop & CHR are more popular with young adults these days or what is it???

In my opinion, this might have something to do with the fact that Country Radio has been playing down a "watered down" format for quite some time...by that I mean, they're playing a lot of "pop" sounding records and very little of what the listeners used to know as "country music". If you push the listeners further towards pop, they might be tempted by those pop radio stations that are playing Triple A format, playing Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt and the like. I kind of think that over the last 10 years or so, we've seen the death of country music, or "Murder on Music Row", and the loss of listeners might have something to do with that.

Country stations still pull in monster ratings in most parts of the south. (Check out Knoxville for example where their station pulls over a 20 rating regularly).
Plus 10 out of 2,000 is less than one percent. I bet other formats have lost that much as well.

Country stations have monster ratings everywhere that isn't a big market and doesn't rely on radio stations from New York City. Tennessee could be the most popular state for Country. Among states with big markets Texas would be up there also. Country stations are popular enough that there could be tons more Country stations than there are now.

According to the newest issue of R&R. Mediabase monitors 2,146 country stations today (4-2-05).
It is still far and away the most listened to format in the country.

I don't understand why NYC has NO country stations, however the CMAs are being held there this year.

The reason why country stations are dropping is because of one simple reason:
Country stations are playing what they want to play and what labels pay them to play...instead of playing what FANS want to hear.
Why would anyone want to listen to any station that plays the same artists 5 times an hour?
Some people, like me, can only stand to listen to Tim McGraw, Kenny, Gretchen, Martina, and Rascal Flatts being played 20+ times a day for so long before they start purposely avoiding the stations that do that.

MusicST -- the simple fact of the matter is that most average country listeners LOVE to hear those artists and love their songs. Since the audience of country music is getting younger and younger, the stations know they can gain listeners by playing the most popular songs more and more. It's just like the CHR/rythmic stations... people love those songs so they play them the most.
Believe what you want, but everyone on this board are NOT average country listeners. We know a lot more about the system than the rest. The average listener doesn't even really care about who gets played and how much. If they like, they like to hear it.

I agree that people don't mind hearing their favorites over and over. I agree we aren't normal (no kidding), but I don't think anyone wants to hear, oh say, Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying" every hour or Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" twice an hour...sure, play Shania or Tim every other hour, but play different songs from them.

You can thank the conglomerates who dominate the industry for that; as previously stated, there is NO reason why 'When The Sun Goes Down', 'Letters From Home', 'Remember When' & 'Mayberry' are among the fifty most-played songs of THIS year when they were all hits LAST year!!!
There are too many PDs out there who are MUCH too afraid of playing new music by new artists, or new music from artists who are 'making comebacks' if you will, to the format/radio, including the likes of Lee Ann Womack, LeAnn Rimes & others.
The fact that Ms. Womack's 'IMHMITM' only gained 700 spins between its spin totals for Febrary & March stems from an overreliance on recurrents and PDs who are just too intimidated by their bosses to either play songs by artists such as Ms. Womack, or the extraordinary new music by the likes of Rachel Proctor, Julie Roberts, Blaine Larsen, Miranda Lamert & several other highly-acclaimed newcomers.
Country radio HAS gained some younger listeners who can't stand CHR/Pop or CHR/Rhythmic stations which play far too many mediocre songs 100 times per week.
NO country station in America has to play its strongest songs more than once every four hours, or 42 times per week, and that's even pushing it!!
Megastars of the format (such as Tim & Shania) will ALWAYS have a presence at country radio; it's up to the PDs to give these newcomers a REAL chance by playing these new songs by new artists in KEY dayparts, such as morning drive or afternoon drive.
They have to TRUST and RESPECT their listeners, and give these newcomers a REAL chance at making it!!!

According to Perpetual Emotion, R&Rs reporting panel expanded by SEVEN stations on April 20th, and now stands at 123 stations.
Once Mediabase begins monitoring all 2,146 country stations, R&R will raise its panel size to 150 stastions, and those 150 stations will be used to determine their chart.
That panel of 150 stations will change WEEKLY, which will undoubtedly go a LONG way towards killing this middle-of-the-night spin buying nonsense which has corrupted the charts of both trades.

I'm assuming the monitoring won't be totally random. If so, we could be seeing some really weird chart runs. Imagine a song going 21 - 14 - 20 - 5 - 22 - 9 on the chart. Surely there'll be some strategy in determining which stations to monitor each week.
