That "performance" was painful to watch. Mariah's dramatic vocal decline will forever remain a mystery to me.
Edit to share my opinion of the video. It's very elegant. A nice change from videos past. I think the song and video will likely remain a simple treat for fans, and largely ignored by the general public.

That "performance" was painful to watch. Mariah's dramatic vocal decline will forever remain a mystery to me. Edit to share my opinion of the video. It's very elegant. A nice change from videos past. I think the song and video will likely remain a simple treat for fans, and largely ignored by the general public. Her vocal decline was due to her newfound freedom... She was living the vida loca. She wasn't at Sing Sing on eternal vocal rest. She wasn't taking care of her voice mostly cause she was out in smoky clubs til the wee hours of the night. Plus this performance was taped early in the day. Her performance of Hero at the beginning of the show was also a tad painful. If you remember she then went on tour and it was night and day from her daydream tour. Her voice was raspy and she struggled to hit the noted she could always hit so effortlessly. Remember Divas Live? Her vocals on Make It Happen we're so raspy. Now she's back to stay at home Mariah. She's probably napping with dem babies and taking care of her voice more. |

Her voice is in much better shape than it was 15 years ago. Many people seem to think that the quality of a singer's vocals simply decline with time, but Mariah's lifestyle change really helped to improve her vocals. She doesn't sound like she did in her early 20s, but she sounds better lately than she did in her late 20s and much of her 30s. |

Her voice is definitely in the best shape it's been since for a long time, with her head voice sometimes even sounding "Daydream"-esque beautiful.
I do wonder, however, if she will ever get her effortless belting back. Even in 1997, she was doing crazy live belting (butterlfly and my all on snl and letterman, for example)... but we haven't seen that since then.
She's had some great moments this year in Australia, but no belting that compares to 1990-1997. I'm praying that comes back- she KILLS ME with those belted runs.
(I still think she has the best voice around, by the way)

Mariah has no plans to perform "Almost Home" on Idol. A possible first single has been chosen, and it's not a JD song. She's still recording though, and they haven't made a final decision. Hope they release it soon. I need uptempo Mariah. Bring me back to Fantasy & Heartbreaker REMIX mariah  |
