Mariah Carey Says Jermaine Dupri's 'Genius' Single Release Will Make Her A 'Regular Person'
Carey and Dupri dish to MTV News about releasing 'The Art of Letting Go' directly to Facebook fans on November 11.

Mariah Carey and Jermaine Dupri have cemented a rock-solid legacy over the past 18 years, collaborating on some of the singer's biggest hits, beginning with "Always Be My Baby." But the longtime friends are now embarking on a new chapter together with the release of Carey's latest song "The Art of Letting Go" on November 11, via Facebook.

In addition to the classics they've crafted, Carey and Dupri have a connection beyond the studio. This summer, the legendary So So Def Recordings founder took on a management role in Mariah's camp — a role he has played unofficially in the careers of artists such as Bow Wow and Kriss Kross.

"We've always had similar tastes in music," Mariah told MTV News of their relationship. "So we met because he was already producing great records and I wanted to work with the person behind the music that I was listening to and loving. That's when people were [shocked] — 'she's trying to work with rappers.' They didn't know what to do with that."

Dupri's first order of business in his management role was encouraging Carey to release her new song via Facebook, in an effort to speak directly to her fans.

"The Internet has made the world flat, so when you have a person like Mariah whose fan base goes from here to other end of the world, why not share [the music] with everyone at once?" he told us.

"If you just put a record out on the Internet, it's judged by how much talk [there is about it] and what's happening on the social networks," Dupri continued. "It's also a new way of putting music out and I wanted her to be one of the first people to explore this territory because the fans want to be reached and they want to be touched. They're talking to me and I don't even know them."

Mariah welcomed the idea of releasing "The Art of Letting Go" directly to fans, even setting up plans to host a Q&A with her Lambs on Facebook in conjunction with the release of the song. "The way I interact with my fans, it's a different thing than most people," Carey explained. "I've [had] this type of relationship with my fans since I first knew I had fans, which was not till my third album. It [sounds] crazy but it's actually true. I never felt like 'oh I'm famous.' I think now, people have one song — even if it's one song, they're like, 'look at me I'm famous.'

"All of a sudden, fame takes over, [but] you have to stay you, you have to stay grounded and my fans have kept me grounded. A lot of times you don't wanna hear somebody's opinion is, but you might wanna take it in and say, 'How do I feel about that? Is that how I really feel as an artist?' So for me, Jermaine's concept was great because it was was something different than I'd done previously, and we needed to reach all of my fans."

Carey, who released the single "Beautiful" with Miguel earlier this year, emphasized that Internet fame puts a short shelf life on an artist's career, recalling the moment she finally believed that she had fans, after seeing them waiting in the cold to land an autograph.

"Honestly, interacting directly with your fans is the best thing you can do because they are the ones who keep you where you are. Longevity is something that not everybody can have," she said. "Even some of the biggest new stars that have become meteorites over the past couple of years, you see them flailing and you wonder why. And maybe it's because they didn't have that connections with their fans."

"I think now everybody feels famous because of the Internet but [it's good] for me to be a regular person and reach my fans directly. I think it's a genius concept.

For the anticipated single "The Art of Letting Go," Carey worked with producer Rodney Jerkins, under the guidance of Jermaine Dupri, but don't let the title fool you, because the mother of two isn't pretending to have all of the answers. "I don't think I've mastered the art of letting of go," Carey replied, when asked if we should interpret the title literally. "I think the art of letting go is something that will probably take most people a lifetime to master, so the song can be interpreted however [fans like]. It's one of those things where people are gonna have to feel the song, if they feel it...then they're really gonna feel it in their heart."

"The Art of Letting Go" will debut on Facebook, November 11.

Earlier this year Mariah announced a July release date for her 11th solo album, also titled The Art of Letting Go but the project has been temporarily delayed. In the meantime, photos of her in the studio with artists like Nas and producers such as Mike Will Made It, Hit-Boy and Boi1da have had fans riled up for the release.

I just now got the Playlist release. I wasn't aware the songs had been remastered. I love that we get the full outro for "Rainbow Interlude," and the added vocals at the start of "Looking In" are nice but pointless. Still, it was cool to get that. Mostly I like the remastering. I would love to see some of her albums - especially Rainbow - released in remastered form.

I don't think anyone has dissed "#Beautiful." Or at most, only a couple people have.

"Almost Home" had a more mixed reaction, but I like it well enough. It isn't a classic, but it's nice to get a real pop ballad from her again, and the vocals (especially at the end) are killer.

Well it isn't a bad thing to premiere it on Facebook. Also, a good way to get a higher Facebook base because I am sure you will have to like her page to hear it. I can cope with that interview. I am glad to hear at the very end that she declined to speak about American Idol and Miley Cyrus. See already "Letting Go," way to get a subtle meaning in there by showing Americans to move on from those topics ;). Having said that, I am mildly curious for this song since Rodney produced this, but more interested in the album as a whole. Would love a look at all the producers on this album that made the cut. If it has more than 3 JD songs, I probably will lose interest in this project quickly as his production is very stale. When it works it works, but more often than not it doesn't.

I really just want another hot uptempo from her.  I would love for her to let Prince/Quincy Jones to produce some tracks for her.

In and of itself it's a fine idea as a way to help it go viral (hopefully). At the same time, if facebook streams don't count toward the Hot 100, and if it means it isn't on sale at iTunes right away, it could be a catch-22.

It was nice to get an interview, though Mariah's still being fairly vague regarding the song and album. It does sound like the album could be in a similar vein to Emotions, which would be a very good thing.
