She doesn't have to love every song, but I've always questioned her ignoring LTT, when she still sings/writs songs of a similar vein. Huh? She hasn't done many songs at all in that style in like 15 years or more! That song is a true pop ballad. She rarely does those anymore.

Well, sure, jeng- hence, Mimi adding more lyrics. :) It seems to me that maybe the original, short song was intended just as something to be used in the movie. Then someone realized it would make a good song in a larger sense and could be the theme for the movie, so they brought in Mariah to flesh it out and then sing it. Then the label issues happened, so Faith Hill was then brought in to sing it.

jeng- I meant lyrically. We've both talked about how she can change the arrangement if she doesn't love the sound of the original.

Why bother rearranging her old hits drastically to suit her current tastes if she has plenty of material she enjoys that she can perform anyway? It's not like the people begging for her to sing songs like "Love Takes Time" or "Someday" are going to be satisfied if she does a breathy, layered take on them with hip-hop beats.

I forgot all you pay attention to is the lyric. Blame it on temporary insanity. All of this! Look, I love "Someday," "Can't Let Go," and others that she never performs anymore, but if she doesn't love the songs she doesn't love them. And what people really want from most of those songs are the big vocals she used to bring more often. As you said, if she did a more 'urban' version of the songs, it wouldn't ultimately satisfy.

Now, you know I don't just pay attention to the lyrics. But in the case of LTT, yes, it's the lyrics I liken to her ballads output.
She doesn't necessarily have to love songs to perform them. A number of acts talk about how they may not love particular songs, but they still sing them. Pat Benatar and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" comes to mind- like Mimi, she does the usual same songs from tour to tour- but, she didn't have the level of singles success Mimi had, so it's understandable that she would stick to a similar set list from tour to tour.
I guess Mimi likes the songs she continues to perform from tour to tour, but I'd like to see some mixing up on tour. She did well with the CLG/LTT medley, and doing "Looking In" at that mini-concert. Some more of that on the next tour would be great.

Well, what I hear from you most about Mariah is how her songs are similar, which always comes down to the lyrics. If you pay attention to more than that, you wouldn't say her songs are similar. She hasn't had a song similar to "Love Takes Time" in awhile, yet you claimed she did...because of the lyrics apparently.

Jazzy- I haven't seen her on tour. As much of a music fan I am, I don't go to a lot of concerts (I didn't even plan on going to see the MDNA Tour, but my other half really wanted to, so it was a last-minute thing). I do watch a lot of concert footage, though. I do regret that I never saw Whitney Houston live. I would like to see Mariah; I'd be more perked up if she mixes up the oldies-but-goodies that she performs. I've never seen another favorite, Janet Jackson, live. Too similar from show to show. And now my other half wants to see Cher's tour (as that's his favorite)- and I will be disappointed if it feels like another retread of the Believe tour. jeng, I do give lyrics/theme a lot of attention, that is true. As for Mimi songs sounding the same, obviously fans have seen similarities in sound between ballads of the 2000s (especially from WBT-on). and same is true for some other tracks, She did have a streak there where adhered to a particular formula from album to album (starting with Butterfly-on), but that doesn't at all mean all the music sounded the same.

"Can't Let Go" is probably my favorite Mariah ballad ever, didn't she sing some of it during a show in the last few years?

Merry Christmas re-enters the BB 200 at No. 186*. Last year, for the comparable chart (12/1/12), it re-entered at 162. So, not far off.

Last year's chart came out the week of Thanksgiving. This year is the week before. In terms of chart week, it's the comparable chart, but I think in terms of holiday albums, it's probably better to compare timeframes. (not that there's much of a difference between 186 and 162 anyways.)

So does she have a release date for her album now? Or will she postpone again and go for yet a fourth "1st single" to try to lounge the album right? If I'm not mistaken she's always been obsessed about the charts and the #1s. I think it's time to give that up and just release great solid albums that will no rely entirely on hit singles. The magic with singles was meant to end at one point. I think that point happened already many years ago for her...

"The Art of Letting Go" debuts at No. 19 on Bubbling Under (and No. 57 Digital Songs)- four rungs lower than "Triumphant (Get 'EM)." Sales dropped pretty steeply this week, so I imagine it will drop off next week.
I believe this is her eighth Bubbling Under entry. Which leaves the following, radio singles or not, as her releases (excluding airplay-only tracks which were ineligible to chart) to miss the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under:
* Can't Take That Away (only because the B-Side, "Crybaby," charted, because of higher overall airplay) * Boy (I Need You) (No. 68 R&B) * Bringing on the Heartbreak (didn't chart anywhere outside of the club-play chart) * I Stay in Love (No. 81 R&B) * Right to Dream (No. 24 AC) * H.A.T.E.U (No. 72 R&B) * 100% (not promoted to any radio format, but issued as a digital single) * Angels Cry (No. 90 R&B, No. 26 AC) * Auld Lang Syne (The New Year's Anthem) (Remix EP issued) * When Christmas Comes (No. 59 R&B) * Almost Home (No. 20 AC)
There's also something like "Things That U Do" (which bubbled under R&B) and "What Would U Do." I don't believe "I'm That Chick" was officially pushed at Urban AC (though it was scheduled to at one point).

And, as a refresher, her Bubbling Under entries:
Sweetheart: No. 25 Never Too Far: No. 5 ("Never Too Far/Hero" medley is a separate entry) Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica): No. 23 Fly Like a Bird: No. 4 So Lonely: No. 14 Lil' Love: No. 17 Triumphant (Get 'Em): No. 15 The Art of Letting Go: No. 19
I also added "Auld Lang Syne" to the previous post.

"The Art of Letting Go" debuts at No. 19 on Bubbling Under (and No. 57 Digital Songs) Any word or estimate on what its sales were? I would guess 25k.

I hope Mimi isn't shunning The Dream just because he was all over her lowest selling studio album to date. The chemistry between the two is great on a musical level! Give the man a song or three he better than your entire producer lineup honey.

jeng- last week, No. 60 did 30k. Overall digital-track sales dropped this past week, so 25-30K sounds reasonable.

I never understood why So Lonely didn't smash...such a hot track! It wasn't a true single, was it? I know it didn't have a video. I don't even think it was pushed to radio. But, yeah, that song is blazing!

Thanks Pissy! I must have missed that, I love Mimi+Dream on Memoirs! It was the best r&b music since Butterfly. Emancipation was more pop/r&b with old school soul music. It hard to explain what I mean so don't ask dahhlings
