There is no official worldwide totals, so in that sense there is no real way to know for sure who is the best-selling. When you look at album sales in individual countries around the world, there are other female artists that have sold more than Mariah. This shouldn't even be a debate here. We all know it's just p.r. bullsh*t.

^And? There are a lot of countries in the world. How does that disprove what he said? It still doesn't.

Meh. The phrasing of "most successful..." leaves plenty room for interpretation. Success could mean anything. So, it's whatever.
Honestly, get over it. Any female artist who can believable claim it will and has. And each is completely justified.

That's three spots higher than it re-entered last year; if it climbs at last year's pace, it could reach a top 20 peak.

@areyouready....while Mariah is not as big in the U.K. compare to Madge, she is however the best selling international artist in Japan(the 2nd largest music market after the U.S.), she's actually the top selling international artist in Asia, the most populated continent.
In the U.S. both women are pretty neck and neck if you take in consideration both certification and actual sales.

I think those who have done good estimates have taken certifications/sales from counties that are known, account for stuff not certified or taken into consideration for certs, what not, and, boom, there are the estimates. I don't know if anyone's done that for all the "divas."
In any event, with numbers that high for all of them, no one is crying over lack of commercial success.

^And? There are a lot of countries in the world. How does that disprove what he said? It still doesn't. Let's take Europe with the IFPI awards. Since 1995, Mariah has 9 million albums sold. Since 1995, Madonna has 27 million albums sold. Since 1995, Celine has 40 million albums sold. Madonna has outsold Mariah in Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany, France, the UK... Celine has outsold Madonna and Mariah in Canada. I think the only place Mariah might have outsold Madonna is Japan. PLUS, I've seen jenglisbe's estimates for worldwide sales. It does not add up to the best selling female artist of all time.

It would be no surprise if Madonna did sell more records than Mariah. After all, her career began seven years before Mariah's, at a time when record sales were very high. Yay for "AIWFCIY" re-entering the chart at 26. I wonder if it beat its top 21 (I think) peak.

I have found an even greater fondness for "Beautiful Ones" from the vocal to the lyrics to how it was arranged vocally. Softer vocals and then those crescendo waves of runs at the end, pure genius! Dru Hill was fantastic but part of me wishes it was a Mimi and Prince duet. The Butterfly album will forever impress me no matter that I listened to it bout a million times. This woman isn't given credit for the genius approach she took to the album. No this was not a bunch of men who cobbled it together, from writing the songs to the vocal arrangement to the vocals and background vocals ALL MARIAH's idea. At a time when it was easier to go a pop route she at her peak took a major risk and frankly none of those songs outside of "Honey" was really made just for radio. She made this album from her heart, took a risk and shaped R&B albums for females. I don't think outside of fans they give her enough credit for "Butterfly" She is without a shadow of a doubt the most important and celebrated female artist of my time.

2014 SAG nominations winners and losers
Winner: Mariah Carey
Yep, that's two-time SAG-nominated actor Mariah Carey to you, darling. That's not exactly a title anyone thought she'd claim around the time of "Glitter," but Hollywood moves in mysterious ways. Admittedly, she's been a bit lucky. She was worthy of ensemble recognition four-years ago for her hard-bitten turn in "Precious," but her blink-and-you'll-miss-her cameo in "The Butler" isn't quite as creditable, and shows up the frequently unfair way in which SAG counts ensembles: she does a lot less in the film than Yaya Alafia, for example, but the latter doesn't get to join her co-stars in the nomination. Still, more power to you, Mariah -- stick with Lee Daniels and he'll get you that Best Actress nomination someday.
This made me LOL! I had no idea she was in "The Butler". I liked her on "Precious".

She looks really good here. It consistently amazes me how she looks better than some female celebrities who are a good 10-15 years younger than her.

If I recall, Prince is not a big fan of covers, but he praised Mariah's cover of the "Beautiful Ones." I think he had a slight criticism of Dru Hill being on the track, but he liked it nonetheless.

It's all conjecture, both on the part of labels and on the part of fans.

Dru Hill was fantastic but part of me wishes it was a Mimi and Prince duet. I looove that track! Mariah's vocal is so intimate and, ultimately, gritty. She really digs into those ad-libs. I would of course love to get a duet between she and Prince.

I actually am not a big fan of Mariah's cover songs. The only one I have loved is "Beautiful Ones". She just really connected on that track. After that, the only one I can enjoy is " I Still Believe", but mostly because I love the remix. I feel like all of her others covers are missing any conviction of actually loving and connecting with the songs.

The author made a minor error; "Jesus Born On This Day" is a Mariah original not "Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child". Otherwise, yes yes yes.

Had anyone put it on record before her? She was definitely the first major recording artist to put it on record, but it wasn't an original composition for that album. It's been confused as one since the album came out though.

^ Nice. I didn't think it would make it. I still think it's a shame it wasn't a bigger hit because it's her best single since at least "We Belong Together."
