Meanwhile EW.com named "When You Believe" the best song from a non-Disney animated film:
It's so interesting to me how well-regarded the song has become (I also think of the press/praise it got when Whitney passed). It was a flop in the U.S. when initially released (it did better internationally, though) but has seemingly endured pretty well.

It's funny seeing all the praise Mariah's music gets now when the same music was being critically maligned back when it originally came out. Thank goodness all those cranky old timers retired.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is that the critics who were around in the 90s have died/retired, and people who grew up on Mariah are now working for the media.

It's not like you find the song popping up all over best-of lists though. I've never seen The Price of Egypt, so I'm not sure how well it works for the movie. On its own, it's OK, but not really one of the best from either lady.

Her ballad single choices have all been pretty bad since TEOM. Bye Bye, Angels Cry, and IWKWLI should never have happened. Memoirs was almost ruined in the last segment with Angels, Languishing and IWKWLI. That's what worries about her comments that she's making music to please everyone. She should be making music that challenges her and that she is convinced in doing rather than trying to make people happy.

Umm...as songs, Angels Cry and Languishing are fine. Hell, Languishing is MORE THAN fine.

She really should have a concept of what her album singles should be before she releases an album. If it looks like people are favoring other songs over the choices they thought were the obvious singles, then the singles can always be switched. She should have the videos for her first and second singles already shot by the time her album drops. She has a way of having the most ridiculously delayed videos, and then when you see these videos there is nothing special to them to suggest why they took forever to get out.
E=MC^2 singles should have been: Touch My Body Migrate For the Record Side Effects I Stay In Love/I Be Lovin' You Long Time (dual single ISIL for Urban and IBLYLT to pop)
Memoirs singles: Obsessed Angels Cry Standing O/Ribbon (whichever one is third, the other should follow 4th) Betcha Gon' Know (last to urban very catchy song, very R Kellyesque)

Mariah shades in a way that you have to be a real shady bitch to understand unless ofcourse she wants you to get it. She is a master at it and always comes out of it not looking bad but humorous. MY QUEEN owns the holidays and the art of shade. Who am I kidding she owns everything she got half a billion $$$. The only thing she doesn't own yet is good producers.

Oops. After 20908, ya think she/her team would have done some research. abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/12/mariah-carey-slammed-by-human-rights-group-for-collecting-dictator-cash/Mariah Carey Slammed by Human Rights Group for Collecting ‘Dictator Cash’By ABC News Dec 20, 2013 Superstar Mariah Carey is being called out by the Human Rights Foundation for her recent concert in Angola for its president, whom the organization calls “one of Africa’s chief human rights violators and most corrupt tyrants.” Carey performed a two-hour concert at an event for the Angolan Red Cross this past Sunday and President José Eduardo dos Santos. Dos Santos, who has been president since 1979, has ordered the deaths of many politicians, journalists and activists who have protested his rule, according to the Human Rights Foundation. Carey was pictured smiling at the event with the president and his family, reportedly saying, “I am happy to be here in this room, and I am honored to share this show with the president of Angola.” Carey has not responded to ABC News’ request for comment. The gala was sponsored by the mobile phone company Unitel, which is owned by dos Santos’ daughter, according to the Human Rights Foundation. “Mariah Carey can’t seem to get enough dictator cash, reportedly more than $1 million this time,” Human Rights Foundation president Thor Halvorssen said in a news release Thursday, referring to Carey’s performance for Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi five years ago. The “All I Want for Christmas” singer later apologized for the Gadhafi performance, saying, “I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess.” Other musicians, including 50 Cent, Usher and Beyonce have also accepted lucrative gigs performing for members of the Gadhafi family. They later donated the money. Jennifer Lopez landed herself in hot water this past July when she sang for the president of Turkmenistan, a country Human Rights Watch calls one of the world’s most repressed.

Great article, thanks for sharing! I wonder why the song was unavailable for that period of time. It could've been even more higher in sales by now, but can't complain.. it's still awesome to see it cross the 1M in the UK! This song will forever be a classic everywhere around the world.

^ Perfection!!! Probably the best AIWFCIY performance since the Disney one from 2004. Plus, the song is taken to the next level with live instruments. I wish she would record an organic, Phil Spector inspired (non-Christmasy obviously) uptempo for her album.

On its own, it's OK, but not really one of the best from either lady. Jesus Christ, it's not all about critics lists. Anyway, our point was more about how Mariah gets more respect from critics in general now. The statement about "WYB" was related, but separate. It is written about positively now when I see it mentioned, and like I said, it was shown a lot when Whitney passed. It is remembered more than I would have thought in 1999.

jeng, you were talking about music that was "critically maligned" before, but now that gets praise- so, mentioning critics lists isn't too far off of that, is it? :) I get what you mean, tough- you're talking about critics' comments in passing, and not necessarily lists.

When You Believe is indeed one of the best songs ever. Their voices blend so well together.
Still hard to believe Whitney's gone forever :'(

Before the digital single market, CD singles weren't generally available once they left the charts - here in the UK at least. So after 1994 until the birth of iTunes et all, there wouldn't have been anywhere for the general public to buy the CD single new here.

It freaks me out too! Starting around 2010, there was a very marked change in the public and critical perception of her and it has only been growing. I don't know if it was the birth of her kids or more recently, the death of Whitney, but all of a sudden, Mariah firmly entered the "legend" category and is being treated with reverence (vs. disdain as little as 5 years ago). Even her "crazy" persona is generally being accepted with affection.

Considering that most non Disney animated musical features really suck, this is not a hard list to top. As for this particular one, anything from South Park should be should be the whole thing. With Somewhere Out There and A Mother's Prayer being special mentions.

Well, I think some of what helps Mariah these days is that people aren't put off by her quirks like they may have been before. I think motherhood and marriage has kind of helped reel some of it in, but I genuinely think people appreciate Mariah for her quirkiness now. I mean very few music stars have personalities, especially in today's music climate. I love Beyonce, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake and many other artists and they certainly deliver through their music, but when you see them in interviews you are like damn did someone die because you have no energy or enthusiasm whatsoever.
I also think Mariah comes from the old guard approach to making music, so I think some critics appreciate that nature of her music. I also think people are understanding that as much as Mariah might give off a "ditzy vibe" she is actually quite intelligent if you engage her in the right type of conversation. I know I was always impressed and still impressed by Mariah's music knowledge. Mariah has also been very consistent with her work really since TEOM. It doesn't hurt that she has really gained traction every season with her Christmas music, so naturally with that legacy many would go back to reviewing her catalog of songs, and putting a new spin on it for the public.

I'm beginning to suspect that the reason Mariah has been in the studio recently recording new songs, is because most if not all of the JD tracks were scrapped after they didn't test well.
Mimi ain't playing this time...

Does anyone think Mariah could have a 'Honey' sized hit on the new album? Could Hit-boy give her something that hot and infectious? What's Hit-boy's track record with radio singles with other artists, pretty good?

What's Hit-boy's track record with radio singles with other artists, pretty good? Not really. He's had a couple big hits as a producer (most notably "***I'M RACIST***s In Paris" and "Clique"). The biggest R&B hit he produced was Kelly Rowland's "Lay It On Me," which only made it to #43 R&B.
