JO DEE MESSINA SEEKS TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOLISM
Billboard Magazine reports today that Jo Dee Messina has entered a rehabilitation facility in Utah for treatment for alcoholism.
Mike Curb, chairman of Messina's label, Curb Records, tells Billboard, "Jo Dee has more drive and passion than anyone I can think of and she's dealt with several challenges in the past. I'm sure she will draw upon the same strength and determination that sustained [her] before to get through this difficult period. She's a gifted performer and nothing is going to stop her from pursuing her music."
Messina will reportedly be able to resume her touring schedule on May 30th in Marksville, La. (Phyllis Stark, Nashville -Billboard)
MORE - The current issue of People Magazine (May 3rd) reveals more about Jo Dee Messina's bout with alcoholism in an article titled "Clean and Sober."
According to Jo Dee's account in 'People' she entered rehab in Utah on February 20th, the day after her manager urged her to do so following a poor performance at a Super Bowl after party. When he told her her show was off that night, Jo Dee said, "Holy ___, I can't remember it. Blackouts, that's the sign of trouble."
Messina describes the austere program at the Utah facility and the breakthroughs she made. She completed the initial rehab on March 22nd, but remains in out-patient cabin in Utah for a short time longer.
Messina cited the break up of her six-year engagement to road manager, Don Muzquiz, as one of the things that intensified her drinking problem.
"He was a good person, but when I asked him when he intended to get married, he got furious. He always had a reason why he couldn't. It Just wasn't a healthy relationship. It set off a lot of the triggers for why I drank," Messina explained.
Jo Dee vows to keep working on her addiction. "I will go to AA and other 12-step program meetings in Nashville, or on the road. Career-wise things are going to change. I still will be the hardest working woman in show-business. But I've slowed down a little bit."
Jo Dee is looking forward to the release of her new album. She says it contains a very relative tune to what she's going through now. "One of the songs is called, 'Can You Hear Me,' which talks about how 'I fell hard and punch knocked me to the ground/ It's not easy getting up, but I ain't staying down.' It's something I feel in my gut and my soul," Jo Dee tells People.

Interesting. Hopefully Jo Dee gets the help that she needs. This news makes her recent career troubles make a little more sense: maybe it wasn't all Curb Records' fault that her album wasn't allowed to be released and hasn't yet seen the light of day.
