It is a chill album. I have been vibing to it nonstop.
I would like to say, I think "Tell Me" is a career's highlight for him. It reminds me of Prince "Adore" where it has length, yet it feels so much shorter than what it is recorded. I want it as a single, every 8 minutes and 29 seconds of it need to be on radio. Such a great one.
I have been digging "Mind of a Man", which should be full song. Caught myself jamming to it and then it just stopped, lol. 'FWM" has become better too.

I don't have Tidal, so I'm unable to listen. But from the reviews I've been reading on social media and other places, I'm hearing it's really bad or really good. No in between.

It depends on the mood. I can see how people can say "bad" if it is not style of music that they are looking for from Usher. I don't feel that way and honestly surprised how great it is. The first two singles did put a bad taste in my mouth despite one growing on me so I hope he can work this album somehow someway.

I put this on at the gym today not expecting much from the initial reaction on this board but wow - blown away. This album is really fire. It sounds current fresh and interesting.

Lmao @ Tameka. On first listen it's decent, some of the lyrics are cringeworthy though. I'm not a fan of the rap/sing style coming from him(i.e. Make U a Believer).
I'm absolutely in love with "Tell Me". I can see it eventually ending up on my personal faves from him.

- Need U - I like the MJ influence but this sounds like an Usher-inspired Chris Brown or JB song. It's nice though. - I don't like these interludes. - Missin U - sounds MJ inspired in a more 'authentic' Usher kind of way. I could imagine this on any of his 2000s albums. - No Limit - grew on me like a fungus, but is basically a trend chaser. Also, doesn't really flow that well in between Missin U and Bump. - Bump - sounds like an Usher-inspired Bieber song, or maybe an 8701 outtake. It's nice though. - Let Me - feels Bryson Tiller/Tory Lanez-ish. It's nice though. - Downtime - sounds like an Usher-inspired Zayn song that was handed off to Bryson Tiller to pen a verse in the middle. It's nice though. - Crash - I may be one of the few but I still really love this song and am disappointed that it has been a flop. It sounds like the natural sequel to Climax. - Make U a Believer - Breezy. Trey? Bryson. No wait, there are a few harmonies; this one is definitely Trey. Maybe Bryson wrote it. It's nice though. "Me plus you, that equals winning" is very cute to me for some reason. - Mind of a Man - what was the point of this? We know you're a whore Usher. Stop trying to justify shit. - FWM - Chris, Trey, and Biebs all rolled up in one, although I should point out now that any Bieber r&b song is usually an Usher-inspired Chris song anyway. It's nice though. The hook is an earworm. - Rivals - Chris/Bieber. It's nice though. - Tell Me - ok, now this feels like an Usher song. Zaddy...HOLY SHIT THIS IS OVER 8 MINUTES LONG OMGGGGGGGG I AM GETTING MY LIFE This is like…a Prince moment without trying to be Prince. I need him to give this a nice radio edit and send it out ASAP so he can create yet another generation of babies. - Hard II Love - This is really pretty. I like this a lot. - Stronger - This probably should have been his pop lead single tbh (and it would have made for a much better tie-in with Hands of Stone than Champions). I think there is some unspoken rule that any song named 'Stronger' is required to be a winner. - Champions - eh. Kind of feels like it was intended for A Keys, not that her singing it would have made me think the song was greater than it is. Clearly just an add-on so I'm not bothered by its presence, but I will go back to ignoring this now. ----- I still think he should have picked up where L4M left off, and just done a better job of picking the singles. That was L4M's big flaw IMO, but he chose to believe the problem was the music and has now meandered in some direction we didn't really need him to go. Hard II Love's biggest flaw is that it reminds us that Usher is still greater than any other current male r&b singer out there, but chooses to prove this point by forcing us to sit through an album full of Usher singing other current male r&b singers' songs. Why is he singing all these 'inspired by Usher' tunes instead of singing stuff written for him? Some of it is lyrical - does Ush really use 'flex' or 'scrilla' in his regular vernacular? They don't seem like words he would normally say. This definitely feels like an album where whoever did A&R went out and gathered stuff instead of having a writing camp specifically for the man who would be singing it. I also am disappointed that there is not even one real banger here - I can understand why there isn't an attempt at a U Don't Have to Call or Yeah! or OMG Moment here since all of those things are likely to be accused of being a pop song these days, but there's not even a LITC or Lil Freak type of moment. Like come on Ush you know some of your lady fans need one good beat driven p-popper per album. This reminds me of popbox complaining a couple of days ago about the current state of radio (pop in particular) and how everyone is putting out a bunch of 'chill' songs and boring him to death. R&b has the same problem too. This is an extremely 'chill' album and that's fine when it's a few people doing it but now everyone is trying to ride that wave and I am not really here for the monotony, especially from someone I know is capable of doing something more varied. If he was going to do chill he should have stuck with whatever album was in the works when he released Good Kisser and SCTGITY (although I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those songs found their way on this album). I'd give this album a 3.5/5 - it's listenable with some 'grower' potential, but not particularly memorable; and despite the 'perfection' of an album title (lol Tameka), not particularly Usher.

He's forcing us to sit through an album full of Usher singing other current male r&b singers' songs. This.

Sitting pretty at 81 on Metacritic, this is Usher's highest rated album.

I've been skimming through the album. It's not terrible, but damn... R&B/Urban music right now is getting on my nerves. WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE THE SAME TEMPO. There is a severe lack of variety in production on this album and it ultimately kills it.
I think if he was going for this sound, "Missin U" should have been the template. It has a very current beat and then brings in old school elements when the chorus kicks in. Best song on the album IMO. I think if he had went current but incorporated some traditional R&B into the mix, it would have been a better album.

This album is a depressing reminder on the current state of the R&b genre and the R&B artist. Like...why? Why is everything sounding like this? (bad) The only songs I use on this album are MISSIN U & NEED U (which is how I feel about Usher making good r&b). Now, I wish Mack Wilds would release new music....

Missin U is dope.

There are a lot of other artists who have made great RnB music this year tho. But they aren't popular. Anderson .Paak, Corinne Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Robert Glasper, We Are KING...and I can go on.

Sorry, I should have rephrased to say Mainstream R&B. And...despite liking maybe 5 songs total on blackSUMMERSnight, I just am not that much of a fan of Maxwell's voice (on this album) like I am with Usher's
