It so happens "License To Chill" won't be the first single after all, despite its video circulated from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit promotion.
Instead, expect an even larger collaborative effect on this Hank Williams cover.
Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and George Strait ALL join him here.
This is undeniably a mega-hit in the making, perhaps the beginning of a new huge era for Jimmy Buffett: airplay dominating era!
My Prediction: #1
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It debuts at #38 on Mediabase with 452 spins. Good grief, what a start. Watching this song zoom to the top will be painful to watch.

I don't really like it, but that guarantees it a #1 spot.

Ok, I just heard it from that allacces link and I don't like it. I'm tempted to call my local station whenver I hear them play it to tell them I"m going to turn off the radio each time it comes on.
Twelve hours after debuting at #37, it's already risen to #35 and gained about 50 more spins to 507. It sure looks like country radio is gonna force feed this bitter pill down our throats whether we like it or not. :(

Let me all join you in condolence for this disappointing comeback by Jimmy Buffett.
I have to say I've been a Buffett fan since I was a boy. I've always loved him for having a great showmanship live performance and personality filled with both heart and sass in his lyrics and performances.
This cover just doesn't do him justice. It just doesn't sound like the Buffett we knew and loved. It sounds like watered-down Margaritaville, like selling out the cheeseburger in paradise to Long John Silvers.
My Grade: F
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

#34 now on Mediabase. The best thing we can hope for is a quick rise and fall.

I don't really like this either, but it's looking like the summer song of the year. It's gimmicky stuff like this that's hogging the airplay for the better singles that get lost in the shuffle ("Flies On The Butter", "Back Of The Bottom Drawer", etc.).

And a big AMEN to 'someguy' for lamenting how gimmicky songs are pushing aside quality songs like 'Back of the Bottom Drawer'. It's just plain sad to see country radio ignore good songs while weak material like this travesty will rise to the top based on a gimmick, not the quality of the song itself. What's next... Shania, Faith, Martina, and the Chicks doing a group-sing of Coal Miner's Daughter? I can't wait.

It's this gimmicky stuff that made me turn country radio off altogether.

It's already at #28 on Mediabase this morning, with a bullet in the 700's. I'm disgusted. >:(

It seems Mediabase is unprepared to handle the ridiculous way that this song is zooming up the charts in it's first week. This morning's update shows the song has a 1000 spin bullet (which is newsworthy all by itself) but way over on the left of the chart it shows that it's position LAST week was 8, and the position THIS week is 25. It had one spin last Wednesday morning, and maybe the LW position of '8' is really something like 1008, and only the last three digits were read by the software creating the page, resulting in '008', which then had the leading zeros removed. Check it out yourself before this afternoon's update probably corrects it: www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Charts.asp?format=c1R&showtopn=500

There are only 357 currents with spins, so if it got played last week it wasn't Number 1,008.

Is this song losing spins already? Though the bullet is +785, I remember it being over +1000 a few days ago, and now the total spins are 1006. I think it's actually lost some airplay in the last couple days, so it may not be the big blockbuster hit it looked like it would be.

Yes, there was an overall drop in Buffett's spins today, but that also happened to Redneck Woman, once, at about 1700 spins or so. Although I wouldn't mind seeing this song stumble, it'll probably keep climbing fast.

From what I can tell, "Hey Good Lookin'" had a deliberate "WHOA, HOLD ON THERE" stoppage in it's gains because it was out-climbing Kenny Chesney's "I Go Back" single. I plotted out the recent spins from the 1-25 chart, and at PRECISELY the spot where Buffet and Chesney were crossing each other in spins, with Buffet rising on a steeper curve, Buffet's song experienced a sudden and drastic change of direction. Instead of continuing it's climb up faster than Kenny, Buffet's song for the last 8 days has been going 'sideways' on the graph while Kenny's song continues it's fast rise. This is apparently to give some breathing space between the two songs so they don't directly compete with each other. That makes sense because Kenny's on both songs, right?
I don't have the graph online, but trust me, the connection between the two songs looks very obvious.

JIMMY BUFFETT WITH CLINT BLACK, KENNY CHESNEY, ALAN JACKSON, TOBY KEITH & GEORGE STRAIT Hey Good Lookin' Producer(s): Michael Utley, Mac McAnally Writer(s): H. Williams Publisher(s): Sony/ATV Songs; Hiriam Music (BMI) Genre: COUNTRY Label/Catalog Number: RCA 82876-62271-2 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: June 05, 2004
This is an event record if there ever was one. Nearly every major male artist in country music joins Buffett on this remake of the Hank Williams classic. And they sound as if they are having a grand old time. The song is from Buffett's upcoming country release, "License to Chill." Producers Michael Utley and Mac McAnally tailor the track in such a way that it pays homage to the spirit of Williams' lively original—while also sounding like a Buffett beach party where attendees have traded in their Stetsons for Hawaiian shirts. It's the ultimate summer-fun song. Country enthusiasts who embraced Buffett and Jackson's eight-week No. 1 smash "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" will repeat the process with "Hey Good Lookin'." And they've got much to look forward to: Nine of the 16 tracks are duets.—DEP

Maybe everyone realized how awful it was. The bullet is down to +32. Very true, but then again we've seen our share of mega-hits on this chart fall pray to this trend. "When The Sun Goes Down" actually LOST its bullet at one point climbing up the chart when it reached #8 (though not a week-end loss of bullet) and the following week was BACKWARD-BULLETED! Yet, it kicked back up and took #1 for a month and a half. "American Soldier" even came close to losing its bullet at one point. Very close. And that was before it made the Top 10. It won't be all too suprising to see this suddenly garner spins again rapidly. (Though I hope that is not the theory and it actually does disappear already). But by the looks of it, this will well likely go #1. Sincerely, Noah Eaton
