Wow! I never thought this will reach the Airplay Top 20! If it keeps up in sales and on-demand streaming, a new peak in the upper half of the top 20 is not out of question.

I'm mean seriously. Do you hear yourself? Alternative music still isn't that popular. You don't see them selling like hot cakes...with the exception of a couple of singles here and there. None of those people have been selling at all for years....and some weren't even that popular when they were popular. I honestly don't think any of the artists you mentioned would ever want their music to be associated with you or your post. Modern Dance music came from R&B and HipHop Genre back in the 80's with a song called "Big Fun". In the early 90's dance songs by CeCe Peniston and Crystal Waters used to chart on the R&B/HipHop charts regularly even before they became mainstream pop radio hits. Prince was just thrown in as a cover for his racist rant. Everyone knows Prince hasn't released anything even remotely mainstream at all in ages....and I doubt this guy has even listened to his post 2000 material. For quite some time now Prince has been releasing albums underground and under the radar and in many cases under an alias. Only a serious and thoughtful prince fan would know that and know that radio wouldn't touch his material....especially if they had actually listened to it first.

He definitely did not mean that is a racist tone at all.
Dark era - period of charts where didn't like what was popular The white boy comment - He's playing on the stereotype that white people don't like r&b music.
I definitely get where someone might get racist tones from it, but I definitely don't think he meant it that way.
I mean, I'm not sure he even understands what racism is. Oh, hai!

Adonis - Big Fun by Kool & the Gang or Inner City..? Either way, really? Inner City. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Fun_(song)In addition, this song is considered by many in the club and DJ communities to be a pioneer with the "Techno" genre of dance music. Inner City is credited with being the first group to develop the "Detroit Techno" style and sound.

If it keeps up in sales and on-demand streaming, a new peak in the upper half of the top 20 is not out of question. It is now being actively promoted to TOP 40, thus the increasing airplay. Funny, I think it is the most commercial of their three hits, but it may not reach the top 10.

Prince doesn't seem to care too much about mainstream success though. There is the occasional song on his recent albums that have single potential, but aside from a performance here and there on TV, he really doesn't do much to promote anymore. Not that he needs to as his concert tours and shows always do sooo well as he is a great live performer. That's where the money is and he knows it. He has a vast catalogue of hits from his heyday in the 80s and 90s. Much of the material released after 1994 or so has been extremely hit or miss.

How sad that a "white boy" had to listen to black artists! :'( ...so it's racist to say that you don't like R&B/Hip Hop music? ??? It's not racist to say you don't like R&B/Hip Hop music. However, when in the same post, you use your race as a reason why you disliked that sort of music and then go on to define "good music" through a list of overwhelming and seemingly white people, there is no reason for casual observers to not infer that "race", for you, is one of the dividing lines of music preference......and a vast number of other things. (Wow at that run-on!) Being white is neither a requirement or prerequisite for commenting on one's dislike of the fact that that particular genre had a stranglehold on the music charts in the early 00's. I wouldn't go as far as to call the OP racist, but it sure does look like he has some antiquated constructs of racial preference that could benefit from a Race 101 class at a community college.

Disliking r&b in general has nothing to do with racism.
I want to believe that he just put it badly (hopefully)

I didn't think his post was racist. But I didn't understand what he meant by "white boy". I'm a "white boy" and hip hop is my favorite genre, and it's also the favorite genre of most "white boys" at my uni as well. I don't really feel like my color determines the sort of music I should be listening to. Most US rappers are black, but with the rappers from my country, it seems to be split about 50:50 between white and black rappers.
But on another note, what about disco? Didn't that dominate the charts at one point? I was reading up about "Disco Demolition Night" a while ago, and I think I read there were weeks where almost the entire top 10 were disco songs. But after Disco Demolition Night, lots of radio stations stopped playing disco songs, and it very quickly left the charts. As a chart-follower, it would've been fascinating to see something like this happen imo.

Disco dominated the top 10 in the summer of 79, with Donna Summer, Chic, Anita Ward and Sister Sledge having the most popular songs. Disco demolition night at Comiskey Park in the summer of 79 was the most notorious backlash against disco, but it probably had already been building. White teen males derided disco because it was not rock music, and it was popular with gay men.
The dominance of disco in one aspect was even more impressive than that by hip-hop. Sales were a major factor in 1979 (several disco songs went platinum) as well as airplay.

Since we're talking history and certifications of singles just came up, I have a few questions.
-are digital sales of older songs combined with physical sales when it comes to certifications? Like, if a single sold a million copies in the 80s or 90s and got certified for it, and then sells a million in digital sales, does it count as Double Platinum or is it just a separate Platinum certification?
-do older songs even receive certifications? Like Don't Stop Believing, which has sold over a million digital I think?

Don't Stop Believin' has sold like 5 million digital
But I don't think labels care about single certifications as much.

Don't Stop Believin' is actually above 5 million in digital sales but according to its Wikipedia page DSB is just certified gold physically, gold digitally and platinum as a ring tone. It seems like the certifications are all separate based on the format? But they don't do that for albums.

Physical and digital are not combined for certification purposes.
Album certs take both physical and digital into account.

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting. "Harlem Shake" is finally on its way out, and I have a strong feeling that it's just going to fall like a rock off the charts. "Thrift Shop"'s airplay is finally peaking and beginning to fall, but its sales and streaming are as strong as ever. This week should be a nice battle between it, "When I Was Your Man," and "Suit & Tie" for number one. "Suit & Tie" should be peaking in airplay pretty soon, though, so this is probably it's last chance to get the top spot with sales probably to start declining from this point out. Especially with "Mirrors" on the quick rise and all. "When I Was Your Man" is becoming an absolute monster in airplay, and its sales and streaming are strong as well. "Stay" is interesting. Its airplay is obviously still growing, but I suspect that its sales and streaming are pretty much leveling out, but I don't foresee them falling anytime soon, just staying stable. This could mean a possible #1 for it once its airplay finally peaks. However, there's also P!nk. "Just Give Me a Reason" still has LOTS of room for growth in airplay. It sales are amazing, with it #1 in that region. Streaming is exploding for it as well. In the coming weeks, as "Thrift Shop" and "Suit & Tie" recede, "Stay" and "Just Give Me a Reason" will take over their spots and battle "When I Was Your Man" for the number one positions. Which is amazing given the fact that all three are ballads. (One of them a piano ballad at that!) I also think this era is amazing for P!nk. Three top ten hits from one album! The last time that happened for her was M!ssundaztood with "Get the Party Started"/"Don't Let Me Get Me"/"Just Like a Pill."
Also, with "Radioactive"'s sales still on the rise and the fact that it's getting an official release to pop, it should be able to finally reach the top ten, becoming Imagine Dragons' first ever top ten hit!

"Stay" has no chance for Hot 100 #1. It's not available on Spotify (similar to Taylor's IKYWT), so it will not hit #1 unless her record label changes their minds.

In Canada it is available on Rdio so the record company must have different strategies depending on the country. Unless TS streaming and sales drop off significantly, it should hold off Bruno and Justin. I think Pink may have a shot in 3 weeks (April 27th).

Taylor's team/label aren't as concerned with getting a #1 but Rihanna's team definitely does care so it's weird that "Stay" hasn't been put up for streaming yet. How long did it take for "Diamonds" to be put up for streaming?

not a racist :'(
the 80s and 90s were great, british bands had airplay and depeche mode, pet shop boys, duran duran, and others were supported by mtv
remember those days when siouxsie and the banshees were played on mtv and us radio and they inspired so many young people
the 90s were dark times, because the 90s were full of crap
radio djs in the 90s and 2000s were idiots and people without brains
i think the time when LA ROUX entered the hot 100, and OWL CITY reached # 1 on the hot 100, was the perfect time when taste came back in the us

no I'm not a racist, i use tan in order to have color in my face
and with dark era i mean dark age
that is a word which is used in History for times, which were bad
medieval times or barbarian times when one was stoned by people when he said he is a christian
soul music of the 90s and 2000s was awful, and rap hip hop of those times also, eminem a wannabe black was the worst (forgive me vanilla ice+ kevin federline)
when usher released IF YOU MAKE ME WANNA i bought his single as a child or teen in 1997 but then he produced only crap
puff daddy in the years 1995- 97 was awesome then he made crap

"Stay" has no chance for Hot 100 #1. It's not available on Spotify (similar to Taylor's IKYWT), so it will not hit #1 unless her record label changes their minds. The Hot 100 is much different than it was with "I Knew You Were Trouble.," though. You don't necessarily have to be on Spotify to be number one now. Why? The inclusion of YouTube. Both "Stay" and "I Knew You Were Trouble." still obtain high streaming numbers now thank to the addition of YouTube. Granted, they'd be higher if Spotify had them, but now a song doesn't necessarily have to be on Spotify to reach number one. "Stay" has no chance for Hot 100 #1.
