I hope PSY debuts top 10 this week. It's broken records for the fastest viewed Youtube video (understandably, since it's the follow-up to one of the biggest hits of this century).

It is #28 on itunes, so it may have a hard time with a top 10 debut

TS continues to weaken in airplay and sales, so unless its' streaming #s strengthen, it will not hit #1. I don't know what's going to be #1, but Thrift Shop can still be #1 even if it falls in all three factors. Bruno might fall faster due to his huge drop in sales and stabilizing airplay, and Pink might not climb enough to overtake. Not saying it will happen, but it's possible for Thrift Shop to get back to #1 without a streaming increase. Doesn't look that way anymore. With the rate TS is losing AI and the rate JGMAR is gaining, the small advantage in airplay TS has over JGMAR will likely disappear by the cut-off time. Plus, JGMAR is ahead on itunes by a comfortable margin even w/ both TS versions combined. So TS would need to have strong streaming in comparison to JGMAR to stand a chance. So it looks like TS is likely out of the running this week. I'm really pulling for Pink on this one.

If they had released it Monday, it might have debuted at no. 10. These labels need to get in with the times and start playing the chart game on Youtube too.

Isn't he supposed to have an English-speaking single for the US? I would imagine, if that's true (I think it is), that they're focusing on that rather than another Korean-language song, making it get a high peak in the US, especially with such new chart system.

I can see PSY debuting in the top 10 personally. It's broken the record for the fastest-viewed Youtube video, it would be a shame for it to miss out imo. That's like a song with the highest first-week sales of all time failing to debut in the top 10.

But, not all of those views are from the U.S.

It's up to 44.5 million views. It will probably be at like 50 million when the streaming week ends at midnight, and YT gets in the full numbers for its release until tonight at midnight. Even if only 1/4 of those are from the US, that's 12.5 million views. EASILY top 10, good shot at top 3.

If it really does debut inside the top ten, let alone the top 3... This is VERY different from "Gangnam Style" or "Harlem Shake." I've literally heard NOTHING about this song outside of the Internet. At least when those two songs (along with others such as "Friday" and the dreadfully catchy "Gummy Bear" song) people were actually talking about them. "Gentleman" does not feel like a top ten hit. Not even a top 50 hit.

But, not all of those views are from the U.S. Yeah, I know. But it's breaking record all over the place. I don't think people understand how big it is. It's like Right Round's debut week in sales, but the streaming equivalent of it. It really should do well in the Hot 100 imo. It will obviously annoy some of the long-time chart followers if it does though, since streaming is still quite a new component in the Hot 100, and it's not really being accepted as a legitimate addition yet. I do agree with you about Gentleman. I've heard practically nothing about it in real life. But on the other hand, there's some big airplay and digital hits that I can say the same about. I've never, ever heard anybody talk about Stronger by Kelly Clarkson in real life, for example. I wouldn't be aware of the existance of the song if I didn't follow the charts.

I didn't realize one's close circle of friends talking about something meant that thing was popular across the entire country.

It's literally been out for what, 2 days? Of course you aren't hearing people talk about it everywhere lol Exactly, all of the teens and tweens and kweens have been out enjoying their weekends. It's only the nerds and has-been who have been online over the weekend long enough to know about Gentleman. Once they are back in class tomorrow, the nerdy ones will talk about it with their other friends [after all, all childhood cliques have the obligatory nerdy friend]. And that's when the word will catch fire amongst the youngsters. They'll be watching the video throughout the week so they can talk about how funny and cool it is. So the views will sore over the weekdays. Then on the weekend once the kids have gotten their allowance, the iTunes surge will begin as they all download the song. So it'll have a nice debut from these two days; and then during its second week on the Hot 100 it will rocket into the #1 slot. tl;dr = word of mouth works better when people are actually at school

Unless BB has changed its' "Alice In Wonderland" methodology, 24 million YouTube views in the US should be enough for "Gentleman" to debut at #1 on the HOT 100. I never thought this was possible but "Gangnam Style" is musical genius compared to Psy's latest offering.

I hope "Just Give Me a Reason" will have just enough sales, airplay and streaming to top "Gentleman". Psy can have his moment next week.

All my friends are talking about this, hell even my mom has seen it, and I didn't even show it to her. It should be #1 Not sure why people talking about a YouTube video means the song is the most popular in the USA. I watched half the video, before my brain assigned it to the "pop s**t" refuse pile. Fortunately I live in a country (Canada) that still tracks just sales and airplay, not YouTube videos.

Fortunately I live in a country (Canada) that still tracks just sales and airplay, not YouTube videos. Since the youtube count is from around the world, obviously the actual count listed isn't an indication in the popularity in the US. But on to what you're argument seems to really be about. Obviously, a raw video count as sole evidence isn't necessarily an indication of popularity. Hence why youtube streams are only part of the forumula. But the fact that it has a massive and growing youtube count, coupled with the fact that it is quickly rising on itunes means something. And unlike Harlem Shake, it seems most people aren't just downloading it for background music to make viral videos. I imagine most of the downloads come from people genuinely liking the song once a visual was added to the music (as is the case w/ many artists and songs). Or the video made them aware of the song and they like it now that it was brought to their attention, which makes the video act as a form of promotion (again, as w/ the case of many artists). Is the youtube view count the be all, end all indication of popularity? No, but it definitely means something and lot more than I feel like you're giving it credit for.
