When Little Peggy March ascended to the top of the chart on April 27, 1963, at the mere age of 15, she became both the youngest artist to ever achieve a #1 song on the Hot 100; as well as the youngest female artist to do so. She would hold on to the record for youngest female for many, many years, but her record for youngest overall artist would be broken just 3 months later by another young artist with "little" in his name. In any case, here is the Billboard Top 10 from exactly 50 years ago this week: May 4, 19631-1 I Will Follow Him - Little Peggy March (2nd week at #1)2-2 Can't Get Used To Losing You - Andy Williams 3-4 Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul & Mary 4-6 Pipeline - Chantay's 5-3 He's So Fine - The Chiffons 6-15 If You Wanna Be Happy - Jimmy Soul (future #1)7-7 Don't Say Nothin' Bad (About My Baby) - The Cookies 8-11 Surfin' U.S.A. - Beach Boys 9-9 On Broadway - The Drifters 10-10 Watermelon Man - Mongo Santamaria Band I love a lot of these songs! Especially #1, #6 and #4.

So PSY presumably peaks at #5.
You know, this new formula is not as radical as initially thought.
Again, Billboard unveiling it at the height if the Harlem Shake craze (& unveiling their new genre formulae last year with Rihanna, Taylor & PSY atop r&b, Country and rap Songs respectively) did themselves a huge disfavor when it came to first impressions.

It was clear they just wanted "Harlem Shake" to hit #1. They really should not count 30 second clips. That part is radical.

13.9 million US streams out of 150 million worlwide? That's what Thrift Shop was getting when Harlem Shake debuted. No wonder he's flopping on iTunes in the US, they don't even know about the video, let alone the song. However, it's good to know that the views are from other countries, because it's top 3 in sales everywhere else

I still don't have a favorable impression of the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. None of the songs to top the chart since the change been Urban/Urban AC radio hits ("Diamonds" was the only one of the three #1s to even chart at Urban radio and it missed the Top 10). Macklemore has had two songs top the chart and has been atop the chart for months with extremely minimal airplay at Urban radio ("Can't Hold Us" is #1 without ever hitting the Top 50 at Urban and isn't even in the Top 40 gainers there). Not to mention, "Diamonds" and "Thrift Shop" are both now tied for the second longest run at #1 on the chart. The turnover at the top is slower than it was before. The reformulations turned it into an entirely different chart.

Are you talking about Billboard's site? If so, I hate what they have done to that site. It's become a hassle to read through the charts. I like it much better how it was prior to their 2013 overhaul. I think he was talking about the ProBoards v5 update (and the update was automatic, so no going back to normal). I also noticed his was a mobile post. I like the look of the site on my computer, but I've heard v5 mobile really blows. ha. correct on all counts. the website on my computer looks fine, but on my iPhone, horrible. unreadable. which is too bad because I read this site mostly on my phone.

He would be #1 if he kept the same ratio from the first 3 days It went from 16% to 8%, there was no way of predicting that.

Comments to multiple posts:
Billboard did not want "Harlem Shake to be #1". The formula change was due to Psy(Gangnam Style), not Harlem Shake, the fact that it occurred the same week was just a coincidence.
Harlem Shake is a domestic virus. Gentlemen is an international one.
I don't think there was a formula change this week. 13.6 million views is not alot. By the time Harlem Shake fell to 13.6 million it was no longer #1.

Oh, boy. This might be a stupid question, but here it goes... Those radio audience impressions, is that 191 million for the #1 song? If true, are we really comparing 191 million to 25 million YouTube views? Come on now. How is that any different than comparing 100 million AI to 100,000 sales? ???

This week is a perfect example of the hazards of trying to predict the HOT100 in the era of YouTube streaming. As it turns out my initial prediction that I gave last week was more accurate then my second prediction. YouTube streaming in the US for "Gentleman" must have slowed considerably as the week went along (it seemed to follow the same downward trajectory as digital downloads).
Next week should be an interesting race to #1. So far Pink is (barely) ahead in sales, significantly ahead in airplay, but starting to lose ground in streaming. Although its' chart position did not change, "Mirrors" had a great week in terms of point gains, and could be a #1 contender in 3-4 weeks.

Yay! JGMAR stays at #1! Now I doubt "Gentleman" will ever hit #1, the sales next week will be very poor, 3 hours ago it was #50 and now it's #55 on iTunes and I expected 25+ million streaming in the US. :o "Can't Hold Us" could be #1 next week, yay!

Again, Billboard unveiling it at the height if the Harlem Shake craze (& unveiling their new genre formulae last year with Rihanna, Taylor & PSY atop r&b, Country and rap Songs respectively) did themselves a huge disfavor when it came to first impressions. The most radical aspect of "Harlem Shake" going to #1 was the inclusion of user generated YouTube videos. Without those it never would have gone to #1. The fact that "Gentleman" beat out "Stay" with no airplay and less than half the sales, indicates that at the very least Billboard's weighting for YouTube streams is "generous". I agree with 2M, the formula does not appear to have been tweaked. According to my math "Gentleman" received more than 40,000 chart points (JGMAR was around 51 to 52 thousand), just a few thousand less than "Can't Hold Us" and "When I Was Your Man". while "Stay" was in the high 30's.

Week Ending April 21, 2013. Songs: Duo of the Year
As recently as seven months ago, few of us had heard of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. This week, the hip-hop duo (rapper Ben Haggerty, 29, and producer Ryan Lewis, 25) has two of the top three hits on the Hot 100. “Can’t Hold Us” (featuring Ray Dalton) jumps from #5 to #2. (It will probably rise to #1 next week.) “Thrift Shop” (featuring Wanz) dips from #2 to #3. Moreover, they have the top two hits (and back-to-back #1 hits) on Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs. And their debut album, The Heist, returns to the top 10 on The Billboard 200.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the first act to have two of the top three hits on the Hot 100 in the same week since Rihanna scored in October 2010 with Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” (on which she was featured) and her own “Only Girl (In The World).” They’re the first duo or group to achieve the feat this since the Black Eyed Peas scored in 2009 with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”
“Can’t Hold Us” jumps to #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. “Thrift Shop” dips to #2 following 14 weeks on top. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the first act to have back-to-back #1 hits on this chart since 2 Chainz scored in August 2012 with “Mercy” (which co-billed Kanye West, Big Sean and Pusha T) and “No Lie (which featured Drake).
“Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us” have sold a combined total of 7,058,000 copies in the U.S. The Heist has sold 610,000 copies. That dramatizes how we’re living in a singles market. (Of course, new and previously unproven acts like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the most prone to having this lopsided result.)
“Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess holds at #1 for the second week. It’s P!nk’s first song to spend two or more weeks on top since another collabo, “Lady Marmalade,” spent five weeks on top in June 2001. P!nk was joined on that movie smash by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim and Mya.
On Hot Digital Songs, “Just Give Me A Reason” is #1 for the fourth time the past five weeks. That’s the longest run at #1 on the digital chart for a female-led collabo since “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris had five weeks on top in late 2011.
PSY’s “Gentleman” vaults from #12 to #5 on the Hot 100 in its second week. It’s the K-Pop star’s second top five hit in a row. “Gangnam Style” spent nine weeks in the top five, including seven straight weeks at #2. “Gentleman” is succeeding on the strength of YouTube and other streaming data. It’s receiving only minimal radio play. It registered a scant 65 plays in the April 15-21 tracking week, according to BDS data. That puts it at the lower end of the 100 most-played “mainstream top 40” track in that span.
“Gentleman” jumps to #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs, displacing “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera.
“Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake featuring Jay-Z drops from #6 to #8. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the first 2-million seller from Timberlake’s current album. His last album spawned three 2-million-sellers: “SexyBack” (featuring Timbaland, 4,185,000), “What Goes Around…Comes Around” (2,375,000) and “My Love” (featuring T.I., 2,208,000).
Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.
The Top Five: “Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess holds at #1 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (262K)…“Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton jumps from #5 to #2 in its 11th week. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (245K)…“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz dips from #2 to #3 in its 29th week on the chart. This is its 18th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (147K)…Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” dips from #3 to #4 in its 18th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (128)…PSY’s “Gentleman” vaults from #12 to #5 in its second week on the chart. It’s his second top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #20 (72K).
The Second Five: “Stay” by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko drops from #4 to #6 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (162K)… Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” holds at #7 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (142K)…“Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake featuring Jay-Z drops from #6 to #8 in its 15th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #17 (83K)… “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera dips from #8 to #9 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #15 (86K)…Drake’s “Started From The Bottom” dips from #9 to #10 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #21 (71K).
Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” drops out of the top 10 after a single week in the winner’s circle.
Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” expected to continue to hover around #11. Digital sales rank: #6 (129K). The song is expected to hold at #1 on Hot Country Songs for the eighth week. It has already posted the longest run at #1 by an ongoing duo since “Don’t Let Me Cross Over” by the husband-and-wife duo Carl Butler and Pearl topped the chart for 11 weeks in 1962-1963.
“I Love It” by Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX is expected to move up from its #16 ranking last week. Digital sales rank: #8 (127K).
Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” is expected to remain in the top 20. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the band’s second song to hit this level. “It’s Time” has sold 2,315,000.
“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams debuts at #20. Digital sales rank: #10 (113K). The song is already Daft Punk’s highest-charting hit to date. The act had previously climbed as high as #61 with 1997’s “Around The World” and 2001’s “One More Time.” “Get Lucky” is from the electronic duo’s fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, which is due May 17. That will be the pair’s first studio album in more than eight years. In the intervening period, they recorded the music for Tron: Legacy, which seems to have boosted the pair’s profile. The soundtrack has sold 581K copies.
Here are other songs that are vying to enter the Hot 100.
“Fall Down” by will.i.am featuring Miley Cyrus. It’s a promotional single from will.i.am’s fourth studio album, #willpower, which is due to enter The Billboard 200 next week with first-week sales of about 20K copies.
Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side.”
“Beat It” by Sean Kingston featuring Chris Brown & Wiz Khalifa. It’s from Kingston’s upcoming third studio album, Back 2 Life.
Emblem3’s “Chloe (You’re The One I Want).” Emblem3 came in fourth on Season 2 of the U.S. version of The X Factor.
“No New Friends” by DJ Khaled featured Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. It’s from DJ Khaled’s upcoming seventh studio album, Suffering From Success.
“I Need Your Love” by Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding. It’s from Harris’ third studio album, 18 Months. The song is also a bonus track on Goulding’s second album, Halcyon.
Neil Diamond’s 1969 smash “Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good)” sold 19K copies last week. Diamond performed the song at a Fenway Park in Boston on April 20, five days after the Boston Marathon terror attack. The song, which has become associated with Boston, was also played at other ballparks around the country (and the world) in a show of support. The song has sold 1,745,000 digital copies. You may be surprised to learn that it never reached #1. It peaked at #4 in August 1969 (behind Zager & Evans’ long-forgotten novelty hit “In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus),” the Rolling Stones’ rock classic “Honky Tonk Women” and Tommy James & the Shondells’ trippy pop hit “Crystal Blue Persuasion.”
The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week.
“The Motto” by Drake featuring Lil Wayne tops the 3 million mark this week. The song reached the top 20 on the Hot 100. It’s Drake’s second best-selling hit. “Forever,” featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, has sold 3,265,000.
R.I.P. Richie Havens, whose evocative version of George Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun” reached #16 in May 1971, died this week. He was 72. The song appeared on the Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road, but wasn’t released as a single.
To My Readers: I’ll have more to add after I’ve seen the full Hot 100.

JGMAR declined and No. 2 increased in chart points, yet there's a greater gap in chart points for this week? Did Billboard reverse the 4k and 7K?

Congrats P!nk for holding at number one! Hoping that Can't Hold Us can hold Gentleman off of number one in the coming weeks and then Mirrors may have a go.
