I doubt this is a sign of things to come. This was just a bad single choice. I can still hope.

The songs now is back with +118 spins. It's up to +207 now. However I think this single is about done for. This is having a similar run like "Hey Good Lookin'" did, where it re-gained its bullet multiple times before plunging. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Toby Keith went from having no bullet for a few days running, to out-of-nowhere gaining 76 spins between yesterday and today on Mediabase. When I saw that sudden turnaround, I thought it looked suspiciously like his label is hiring so-called 'independent promotors' to buy spins in the wee hours of the morning to prop up the song. When I compared his spins in the OVN column (the 'Overnight Daypart' ) vs. the numbers you see in the am-mid-pm-eve hours it was obvious he was getting big increases at various stations in the Overnight daypart.
This week on Billboard he moves up one to #5 by virtue of Strait falling five positions to #7. Toby had no bullet (-1 change). I'm almost certain that #6 Chesney with his +515 bulet will easily pass him this week, though, despite the attempt to keep "Stays in Mexico" from falling.

The apparent overnight spin buying continues... Toby's got over 40 spins in the Overnight daypart at KWJJ in Portland, while during the remainder of the day at that station his total for the last 7 days is just 18. That same station is doing a simliar thing for Brooks and Dunn right now, too. Other stations participating in the out-of-proportion overnight increases for "Stays in Mexico" are WBEE in Rochester and WGGY in Wilkes-Barre. There may be other stations, but it's not a widespread thing, yet. The three stations I mentioned account for over a third of his bullet of +102.

Has to be payola. When a song that was -100 plays is up to +370..the album can't push it that much. SHania's is out on the same day, and she has had more promo, her bullet is barely over +100.

The fact that the top of the charts is VERY soft right now--look at the spins for the number one song, easily the fewest for any charttopper this year, MAY have inspired somebody at his label to think they can buy the #1 slot the way that Reba's & Terri's label did in BB.
However, Kenny is a lock to pass him in a week or two, and Tim will pass him too--both of those should slug it out for #1 before the year is over.

Toby is Greatest Gainer on today's mediabase chart, very close to #2. >:( How is that happening? Also, I see a 3-4 week run at #1 for Lonestar, but it's going to be a tight race between Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw for #1 in a month or so.

I don't particularly care for this song. Toby has made some great music over the past couple years, but this is not that great.
I just want it to go to number one soon so that it will go away.

definatly payola at work. The song looked to have peaked about 2 weeks ago. It did peak two weeks ago... on the Music Row chart. I kind of doubt anyone bothers to use payola in any significant amount to manipulate the Music Row chart since it tracks about 85 or so small market stations that are shut out of the R&R and Billboard panels. It may be more honest about what songs are really popular, though, because of that. To give credit where credit is due, Toby did manage to peak at #2 on Music Row, and I would guess he got there without the aid of payola since nobody really pays much serious attention to that chart. Here's this week's Music Row chart for the curious... www.musicrow.com/pdfs/bo-chart/Break04-45.htmlSwitching gears back to Mediabase, here's a graph of the Top 30 as of today... home.earthlink.net/~oceanblue831/shedaisy/graphs/all_spins2.gifToby's spin buy really sticks out. It started just after Gary Allen had passed him. Also, notice how Blake Shelton's spins were suddenly pulled way back just as he was getting too close for comfort to Tim Mcgraw. It looked like Tim was on the verge of being passed, but that's a No-No since he's a Big Name and Blake isn't. Just more country radio politics at work, I guess.

Toby's spin buying may be faltering... On Mediabase he lost 114 spins today, and had a huge drop of 1.3 million in audience.
On Billboard this week he's #3 with a +527 bullet (the 2nd largest after Gretchen).

Don't these record companies just realize that they're lying to themselves when they stoop to such underhanded tactics to boost a song's popularity?
The fact that this song died after only 14 weeks on the charts (which has been close to the average amount of time for any given song to climb to #1 for over three years now is obviously something that perturbed his record label.
But with the top of the chrts being VERY soft right now (based on the small number of spins for Phil Vassar's charttopper), I guess the record label had to do something to push the song upward; it would otherwise go into the books as a flop for him, given his chart accompplishments of the past 2 1/2 years.
Kenny and Tim are both headed to #1, and he can't stop them, and that's the bottom line.
Mr. Jackson appears headed to #1 by Super Bowl Sunday or thereabouts.
He's up to #3 in the new R&R, and gained 411 spins. most of which were undoubtedly purchased.

Looks like "Stays In Mexico" is finally losing ground! (or is it?) LOL! Geez, it looked like at four different times it was going to be done for good. But this time, I'm pretty confident it's finally over. "Stays In Mexico" now has the 8th largest audience on the chart, despite currently sitting at #4, an obvious sign this single is about to lose many spins. "Stays in Mexico" officially ends Toby Keith's long streak of consecutive #1 singles. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

His 'long streak of #1 singles' is non-existent, since his label killed 'Rock You Baby' because too many heavyweights were playing the heck out of 'Beer For My Horses'.
Setting aside that episode, he does have a nice streak of consecutive #1s, and he might wind up being the #1 singles artist of 2004, which would make it three straight years, but Kenny Chesney will have TWO songs in the year-end top five, while TK will have 'American Soldier' finish #2 for the year, so it's going to be REAL close!!!!
'Remember When' is a lock for #1 for the year, which has been the case since late summer.
I know Tim McGraw leads everybody with 17 #1s since 1997, and Toby is undoubtedly in the top 5 since then.

That's even more than Reba lost following her week at #1 isn't it?
This song is just so bad, it's revolting.

Buying all those spins was a HUGE boo-boo just to push the song to #3 @ R&R; he just lost a Reba-like 1,077 spins in the new R&R and fell from #3 to #8.
I'm sure his label didn't want to release another single BEFORE Chritstmas, but when this song started to slow down rapidly after only TWELVE weeks on the charts, his label must have known that this song was a lost cause as it pertains to hitting #1.

WOW...this single is continuing to collapse at an alarming rate!
I think this will be the first time a Toby Keith single in my memory, and certainly before the "How Do You Like Me Now?" breakthrough era, failed to go as a top five recurrent.
Peaking at #3 may seem strong, but by Toby Keith standards, I consider this single a flop.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Wow!!!!

Judging by the fact that there is a LOT of resistance to 'Mockingbird' (it did reach 'Breaker' status---airplay on 60% of R&Rs reporters) in this week's issue of R&R, the fact that it's stuck again at #31 after 4 weeks on the chart must be alarming to his label, given the stupendous drops which 'Stays In Mexico' has made in the past 4-5 weeks.
Having been replaced by Kenny Chesney as country radio's #1 singles artist of 2004, it's safe to say he won't finish second again, since Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Chesney, Alan Jackson and even Gretchen Wilson figure to outpoint him in 2005, especially if Ms. Wilson has a fourth single from 'Here For The Party' lined up.
Since 'Back When' has hit #1 in both trades this week (Tim's 22nd charttopper @ R&R, and his 21st in BB), that's also his FIFTH straight #1 @ R&R as well.

This coiuld be his worst-charting single in SEVERAL years.
I don't have his new CD, but unless there's a GREAT ballad with the power of 'My List' or 'You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like That', he's in a REAL fix!!!
Kenne Chesney replaced him at #1 insofar as R&Rs most played artist of 2004, is and he did finish second, but Tim McGraw, Chesney, Gretchen Wilson & Keith Urban all have HUGE leads over him for 2005 airplay honors, even though the 2005 chart year is only three weeks old as of midnight (EST) this Saturday.
The fact that KC had THREE of the top fifteen singles of 2004 isn't good new for Toby either, who only managed one!!!!
