Being released earlier isn't really an advantage on iTunes. Either way I just checked Kworb and the substitute does in fact beat the original. - 14 Ariana Grande - The Way (feat. Mac Miller) 0.3612
- 15 Mariah Carey - #Beautiful (feat. Miguel) 0.3534
Plus it was a Mariah stan who brought up the comparison, not me. Just figured I'd mention that he's wrong. chatoyant is not a Mariah stan, and what they said was true at the time they posted it. They weren't wrong.

When you factor in everything airplay+sales+ quality it's still not beating the original and we will see who places higher on the billboard hot 100 soon enough.

The whole comparison is ridiculous because Ariana is hardly a substitute in any manner for Mariah.
And if you factor in airplay, I think the difference in airplay trumps the barely existent one on iTunes. So, does the substitute really beat the original?

I meant that they weren't right anymore In my criteria (iTunes, I don't think airplay should be counted yet as it still includes the CC deal) Fat Ass Kelly Price & @haunted Considering it's going to lose 25 million AI before the H100 is calculated, I wouldn't be surprised if #Beautiful debuted below The Way this week. It climbed 19-15 last week so I assume it has a lot of streaming points.

Isn't the Clear Channel deal irrelevant to the daily gains at this point?

Chatoyant was talking about overall airplay, not daily gains.

Yes I'm sure Chatoyant is the root cause for you trying hard to discredit the song. It has nothing to do with the fact you have already stated you don't like it, which btw is perfectly fine.

Codex, I knew you would say something like that. But by the logic you've been expressing, what happened then and in the future is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is this very moment. And at this very moment, the original is trumping the "substitute."

Ariana isn't substituting a thing, so basically this whole argument is irrelevant.

Ariana isn't substituting a thing, so basically this whole argument is irrelevant. I agree, "the pupil beats the teacher" or a similar phrase would have been a better fit, in my opinion. Codex, I knew you would say something like that. But by the logic you've been expressing, what happened then and in the future is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is this very moment. And at this very moment, the original is trumping the "substitute." Coco brought up this week's H100, I was replying to that. Otherwise I have been talking about "this very moment". The clear channel deal inflates the rolling chart, if you only look at today's airplay Mariah had 6.730 AI today, while Ariana had around 7.427, it's just below it on the overall rolling chart since it's lacking the 30 million artificial AI that Mariah has. Though, I'm sure Mariah will pass her in daily airplay in a couple days, but I don't think it's fair to compare their AI until the CC deal is rinsed out. :)

The hourly airplay promo wouldn't be affecting daily gains; but, if there was other airplay "incentive"/promo for the first week, that would. We have no way of knowing that. What we do know is that radio doesn't have viable listener feedback/data to determien whether it should spike airplay for a track in its debut week. So, initial airplay like this isn't unprecedented (it was common for radio favorites, Mimi included, in the past).
And this Ariana comparison is pretty silly. She's 19 years old, with her first hit, for cryin' out loud.

Tomorrow is Mariah's eight day, correct? If so, then she's going to drop about 25 million AI tomorrow, knocking her down to the 40s, but it was to be expected due to the huge first day with the CC deal and everything.

The chart run COULD be something similar to the lead single off Madonna's last album. (I say "COULD" because I don't want to get beat up ;) ) Once the 'purchased popularity' points; have been delivered and wear off you COULD see heavy drops in week 2 and 3 and an overall short life
of course, I could be wrong too

venturing into any kind of Madonna/Mariah comparison is asking for trouble, so I should know better than this...but I'm also curious to explore the similarities, since a chart run like GMAYL is what I fear for "#Beautiful" at this point. of course, even if it does end up performing just like GMAYL on the Hot 100, it'll still have a much better chart run than anything that Mariah's released since "Obsessed", and that's certainly something to be thankful for. :)
with GMAYL: Week 1 on Hot 100 = debuted at No. 13 thanks to Clear Channel airplay deal (which was only one day, correct?) and first-week downloads Week 2 = jumped to No. 10 thanks to download boost from Super Bowl performance. was airplay already falling at this point? Week 3 onwards = tumbled off chart
with "#Beautiful" Week 1 on Hot 100 = likely debut between No. 15 - No. 20 thanks to first-week downloads (partially aided by the video premiere on AI), strong airplay (but no CC deal, since that was the chart week prior), and video streams (not a factor when GMAYL was charting) Week 2 = likely tumble, but how far? it's stabilized between No. 15-No. 20 on iTunes for now. will this week be affected by her AI finale performance? I forget when that's happening.
I don't remember much about GMAYL's airplay performence, but I think "#Beautiful" is gaining more than GMAYL was at this point, no? hopefully that's a sign of a brighter future for "#Beautiful".

I believe Madonna's deal was for one week. Also, Unless airplay slows down over the next 7 days, there shouldn't be much, if any, fall in week 2 for Beautiful. I am going to guess that it'll debut top 20 and consistently rise from there. Any slight drop in downloads in week two should be compensated for with airplay/streaming.

GMAYL was for one weekend, Superbowl weekend....Friday/Saturday/Sunday. (remember the video premiered on Idol on Thur) Over the next week it still saw gains, but the week after that, it collapsed.

thanks for the responses!
it looks like, based on how "#Beautiful" is doing airplay-wise since the end of its CC deal, the outlook is much brighter than it was for GMAYL. there's no guarantees for the future, of course, but the signs (thus far) sound pretty promising. :)

I know the salivating's gonna be intense in here tomorrow for that 8th day. I don't understand why people make such a fuss over it anyway. All it is is the previous day increase - the increase the week before, the same as any other day. It's just negative because the week before was so high. Really a -25 million AI would be very good in this case. Every song with those radio deals people have celebrations about them "flopping" on day 8 and most of them end up big hits in the end. You'd think people would learn.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/1561411/chart-highlights-mariah-carey-miguel-blast-onto-radio-rankingsMariah Carey soars onto a host of Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based airplay tallies with "#Beautiful," featuring Miguel. The song starts on Pop Songs at No. 22; Adult Contemporary (No. 23); Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop (No. 29);and Adult Pop Songs (No. 35). Coordinated airplay on Clear Channel Media and Entertainment stations aided the song's first week. Beginning at 7 a.m. EST on Monday, May 6 (the first day of the chart tracking week), "#Beautiful" played at the top of each hour until 11 p.m. on approximately 230 Clear Channel outlets. Still, stations in other chains played "#Beautiful" over its first seven days of availability, including CBS Radio-owned Pop SOngs panelists WBBM Chicago (61 spins), WNOW New York and KMVQ San Francisco (32 each). With the bow of "#Beautiful," the lead single from Carey's forthcoming 13th studio album, due this summer, Carey ups her count to 30 Pop Songs entries dating to the chart's Oct. 3, 1992, launch, tying Britney Spears for the second-most appearances. Only Rihanna (35) has tallied more visits. The song's debut rank is Carey's third-best, trailing only the starts of "Dreamlover" (the list's all-time top starter: No. 12 in 1993) and "Endless Love," with Luther Vandross (No. 20, 1994). Miguel makes his second appearance on Pop Songs. He previously charted with "Adorn," which reached No. 35 in December.
