Albums: Great Gatsby Off To Great StartBy Paul Grein | Chart Watch Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film The Great Gatsby enters The Billboard 200 at #2, just behind Lady Antebellum’s Golden. Gatsby sold 137K copies, about 50% more than initially forecast. This is the biggest one-week sales tally for a soundtrack since The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond sold 175K in its first week in March 2012. This is the third soundtrack to a film directed by Luhrmann to reach the top three. Romeo + Juliet hit #2 in January 1997. Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film Moulin Rouge hit #3 in June 2001. All three of these albums have spawned hit songs. Romeo + Juliet featured the Cardigans’ “Lovefool” and Garbage’s “#1 Crush.” Moulin Rouge yielded a chart-topping remake of LaBelle’s 1975 smash “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and P!nk. The Great Gatsby has spawned Lana Del Rey’s “Young & Beautiful” and “Little Party Never Killed Nobody” by Fergie, Q-Tip & GoonRock. Jay-Z served as executive producer of the Gatsby soundtrack, which also features such artists as Andre 3000, Jack White and Florence + the Machine. The album is an instant front-runner to win the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media, an award won in February by Midnight In Paris. The album sold 119K digital copies (87% of its total), which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. That’s the biggest one-week digital sales tally ever for a soundtrack, surpassing Glee: The Music: Journey To Regionals, which sold 106 copies in its first week in June 2010. Among movies from theatrically-released movies, the old record was held by the aforementioned The Hunger Games, which sold 100K digital copies in its first week. Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in The Great Gatsby, also starred in Romeo + Juliet. (He also starred in a non-Luhrmann movie that spawned a rather successful soundtrack, Titanic.) DiCaprio is 38, one year older than Robert Redford was when he starred in the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. (Wanna feel old? DiCaprio wasn’t even born yet when Redford’s movie came out in March 1974. DiCaprio was born that November.) The Great Gatsby has far eclipsed the soundtrack to that 1974 film, which peaked at #85. Legendary arranger and conductor Nelson Riddle conducted the album, which included such vintage 1920s songs as “It Had To be You,” “What’ll I Do” and “Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby.” Riddle won an Oscar for his work on the film in the now-defunct category of Best Original Song Score And/Or Adaptation. While Luhrmann appreciates the jazz that Fitzgerald describes in the novel (and which dominated the 1974 soundtrack), he chose to go another way. “No matter how much I like that music, it’s classical music now,” he told the Los Angeles Times’ Mikael Wood. “Gatsby was intoxicating everyone in New York with champagne and music…Now there’s another form of African American street music—hip-hop—that speaks in exactly the same way to our lives.” The Great Gatsby album enters Top Soundtracks at #1, displacing Iron Man 3: Heroes Fall, which drops to #6 on that chart. The two movies were in reverse order at the box-office over the weekend. Iron Man 3 was #1 for the second weekend in a row. Gatsby debuted at #2. Romeo + Juliet was the highest-ranking soundtrack on The Billboard 200 for three weeks. Moulin Rouge was the top soundtrack for eight weeks. Lady Antebellum’s Golden debuts at #1. It’s the trio’s third studio album to reach #1. (It follows Need You Now and Own The Night.) This puts Lady A just one album behind Rascal Flatts, which reached #1 with four studio albums between 2004 and 2009. Dixie Chicks also reached #1 with three studio albums. One country duo, Sugarland, has had three #1 albums, but that tally includes a live album. Golden displaces Kenny Chesney’s Life On A Rock from #1. This marks the first time that country albums have appeared at #1 back-to-back since Jason Aldean’s Night Train and Taylor Swift’s Red did it in October. (If you don’t consider Red to be country album, you have to go back to October 2010 for Sugarland’s The Incredible Machine and Swift’s previous, more country-oriented Speak Now.) Golden enters Top Country Albums at #1. All four of the trio’s studio albums have topped the country chart. Now 46 debuts at #3. It’s the 43rd consecutive regular Now installment to debut in the top five. An offshoot, Now Country Party, debuts at #31. Pistol Annies’ Annie Up debuts at #4. It’s the trio’s second top five album in a row. Hell On Heels reached #5 in September 2011. The trio features Miranda Lambert, who has also had three top 10 albums on her own. In a unique circumstance, Lambert’s husband, Blake Shelton, is also listed in the top 10. Based On A True Story… logs its seventh week in the top 10, which is Shelton’s best showing to date. It surpasses Red River Blue, which spent four weeks in the top 10 in 2011. That album is close to becoming Shelton’s first million-selling album. It is up to 973K. Rod Stewart’s Time debuts at #7. It’s his first studio album of new material to crack the top 10 since Vagabond Heart in May 1991. Time is Stewart’s ninth consecutive studio album to make the top 10, but the previous eight consisted of vintage material—five volumes of traditional pop standards and one volume each of rock, soul and Christmas classics. The Great American Songbook albums, though derided as cheesy by critics, brought Stewart back to prominence. None of his three studio albums immediately prior to the release of the first standards album in 2002 even cracked the top 30. The last of the three, Human, stalled at a dismal #50 in 2001. Time is Stewart’s 17th top 10 album (not counting a 1972 album with Faces). That puts Stewart in a tie with his pal Elton John for the second most top 10 albums by a British male solo artist. (Elton’s tally counts a collabo with Leon Russell.) They both trail Paul McCartney, who has had 18 top 10 albums apart from the Beatles. (McCartney’s total counts eight albums with Wings and one with his late wife, Linda McCartney). This week’s debut gives Stewart a nearly 42-year span of top 10 albums. He first cracked the top 10 in July 1971 with Every Picture Tells A Story. Stewart is one of six male solo artists in this week’s top 10. By comparison, the highest-ranking female solo artist is P!nk at #11. “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton holds at #1 for the third week on Hot Digital Songs (241K). Will it also hold at #1 for the second week on the Hot 100? And how high will “#Beautiful” by Mariah Carey featuring Miguel debut? (It enters Hot Digital Songs at #10 with sales of 114K). You’ll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Lady Antebellum’s Golden debuts at #1 (167K). It’s the trio’s fifth top 10 album...Music From Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby debuts at #2 (137K)… Now 46 debuts at #3 (91K). It’s the 51st album in the Now franchise to reach the top 10… Pistol Annies’ Annie Up debuts at #4 (83K). It’s their second top five album…Michael Buble’s To Be Loved drops from #2 to #5 in its third week (74K). The Second Five: Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience drops from #3 to #6 in its eighth week (65K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Rod Stewart’s Time debuts at #7 (52K). It’s his 17th top 10 album…Kenny Chesney’s Life On A Rock drops from #1 to #8 in its second week (48K)…Blake Shelton’s Based On A True Story… drops from #6 to #9 in its seventh week (38K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox drops from #8 to #10 in its 22nd week (32K). This is its 19th week in the top 10. Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Fantasia’s Side Effects Of You drops from #4 to #18. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist drops from #5 to #12. P!nk’s The Truth About Love drops from #7 to #11. Randy Rogers Band’s Trouble plummets from #9 to #87. Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions drops from #10 to #14. The Music Of Nashville, Season 1, Volume 2 debuts at #13. The first volume reached #14 in December. She & Him’s Volume 3 debuts at #15. It’s the pair’s third top 20 album. Volume Two reached #6 in April 2010. A Very She & He Christmas hit #12 in October 2011. The duo includes Zooey Deschanel, the star of TV’s New Girl, which debuted in September 2011. Deschanel received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the first season. Natalie Maines’ first solo album, Mother, enters The Billboard 200 at #17. That’s far below the level of success that Maines enjoyed as a member of Dixie Chicks. All four of that trio’s studio albums reached the top five; the last three debuted at #1. Mother is a rock album, not a country album, so it doesn’t appear on Top Country Albums. The title track first appeared on Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall. Fitz & the Tantrums’ second studio album More Than Just A Dream debuts at #25. It has far surpassed the #140 peak of the band’s 2010 debut, Pickin’ Up The Pieces…Straight No Chaser’s fourth studio album, Under The Influence, debuts at #28. This edges out the group’s previous album, With A Twist (which peaked at #29) to become its highest-charting album to date. George Jones’ 1987 compilation Super Hits jumps from #90 to #68 in its third week on the chart. The album jumps to #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Jones’ 1998 compilation 16 Biggest Hits. Jones is the first artist to top the catalog chart in each of the first three weeks after his or her death since Whitney Houston did it in each of the first five weeks after her death in February 2011. Though Super Hits didn’t crack The Billboard 200 until after Jones’ death (when it finally debuted at #56), it has been a big seller. It has sold 2,278,000 copies. Eagles’ History Of The Eagles, a three-disk documentary/concert video, is #1 on Top Music Videos for the second week. It sold 10K copies this week, down from 23K in its first week. Coming Attractions: Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires Of The City, Demi Lovato’s Demi and George Strait’s Love Is Everything will battle for #1 next week. Also due: Trace Adkins’ Love Will and Amy Grant’s How Mercy Looks From Here.

What was the last time that a husband and wife both appeared in the top 10 with competing albums? I feel like it has happened before.

I know it's just a minor typo of one missed character, but this threw me the first time I read it.
Interesting. Elton John is supposed to drop a new album later this year; we'll see if he can tie himself with McCartney.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1562288/lady-antebellum-scores-third-no-1-album-gatsby-debuts-strongLady Antebellum Scores Third No. 1 Album, 'Gatsby' Debuts Strong at No. 2 By Keith Caulfield | May 15, 2013 Country trio Lady Antebellum earns its third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as its new Golden debuts with 167,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album sold slightly better than initially forecast: A week ago, industry sources suggested that Golden was to move around 150,000 copies. But the album performed well over the weekend, thus granting it a more robust debut. Blame Mother's Day gift shopping for some of that sales bump, as the holiday fell on the final day of the tracking week, Sunday, May 12. Golden follows Lady Antebellum's previous No. 1s Own the Night (2011) and Need You Now (2010). Their first set, a self-titled effort released in 2008, debuted and peaked at No. 4. Own the Night started bigger than Golden -- 347,000 when it was released in September of 2011. Before that, Need You Now, bolstered by its title track, launched with 480,000. Starting strong at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 this week is the soundtrack to the new movie "The Great Gatsby." The set charges in with 137,000 -- the best sales week for a soundtrack in over a year. The last to sell more in a week was "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond," when it entered at No. 1 with 175,000. "The Great Gatsby's" sales were overwhelmingly driven by downloads: Its 119,000 digital haul is the largest digital sales week for a soundtrack ever. In turn, the set bows at No. 1 on the Digital Albums chart. The previous digital record for a soundtrack was set in June of 2010 by the "Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals" EP with 106,000 downloads. "The Great Gatsby," directed by Baz Luhrmann, opened in U.S. theaters on Friday, May 10. Its soundtrack is an all-star affair, as it includes songs by Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jack White, Fergie, Lana Del Rey and Sia, among others. "The Great Gatsby's" sales debut is much higher than the 95,000 that it was projected to sell a week ago. It would seem the film's strong integration of music, and the movie's box office success over its opening weekend, were clear drivers in the album's sales. Two earlier soundtracks from Luhrmann-directed films also had great chart success: 1996's "Romeo + Juliet" climbed No. 2, while 2001's "Moulin Rouge!" reached No. 3, after debuting at No. 5 three weeks earlier. At No. 3 on the Billboard 200 this week is the new Now 46 compilation, starting with 91,000. All of the regular numbered Now albums have reached the top 10, and all but the first debuted in the top 10. Now 45 entered at No. 3 earlier this year with 87,000, while Now 44 bowed at No. 2 last November with 99,000. Rounding out the top four is Michael Buble's To Be Loved, falling 2-4 with 84,000 (down 12%). At No. 5 is country trio Pistol Annies, whose second album, Annie Up, debuts with 83,000. The act comprises Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley and superstar Miranda Lambert. The start for Annie Up almost doubles the launch of the group's first album, 2011's Hell on Heels (44,000 at No. 5). There's one more debut in the top 10 this week: Rod Stewart's Time clocks in at No. 7 with 52,000. It's the legend's highest-charting studio album of original material since -- believe it or not -- 1979, when Blondes Have More Fun spent three weeks at No. 1. Of course, Stewart has charted many albums since Blondes, but everything that reached the top six between then and now were either a Christmas set of mostly oldies (Merry Christmas, Baby, No. 3 in 2012), one of his many successful covers collections released between 2002 and 2010, or a live album (Unplugged. . . And Seated, No. 2 in 1993). As for the other chart holdovers in the top 10 this week: Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience slips 3-6 with 66,000 (down 3%). Last week's No. 1, Kenny Chesney's Life on a Rock, falls to No. 8 with 48,000 (down 68%), Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story slides 6-9 with 38,000 (though it's up by 9%), and Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox is pushed back 8-10 with 32,000 (despite a 24% increase). The latter title's gain can be owed in part to Mother's Day shopping, as it's likely a set sure to appeal to moms. Same goes for Shelton's set at No. 9, and just outside the top 10, P!nk's The Truth About Love. It gains by 14%, but falls 7-11. Over on the Digital Songs chart, the entire top five are non-movers, led once again by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton), with 241,000 (down 8%). At Nos. 2-5: P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason" (featuring Nate Ruess) with 230,000 (down 10%), Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" with 168,000 (down 5%), Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" with 151,000 (up 4%) and Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko) with 145,000 (up 4%). Selena Gomez's "Come & Get It" jumps 9-6 with 143,000 (up 24%), while Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" is steady at No. 7 with 141,000 (up 5%). Icona Pop's "I Love It" (featuring Charli XCX) falls 6-8 with 128,000 (down 5%) and Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" rises 10-9 with 115,000 (up 6%). Closing out the top 10 is a new entry from Mariah Carey: "#Beautiful," featuring Miguel. It starts with 114,000 at No. 10 and marks her best sales week for a song since 2009, when "Obsessed" arrived at No. 9 on Digital Songs with 119,000. "#Beautiful" is the lead track from Carey's upcoming album, due out this summer. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending May 12) totaled 5.53 million units, up 8% compared with the sum last week (5.11 million) and down 1% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.58 million). Year to date album sales stand at 106.29 million, down 5% compared to the same total at this point last year (112.31 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.26 million downloads, up less than 1% compared with last week (24.17 million) and down 3% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (24.96 million). Year to date track sales are at 506.75 million, down 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (520.35 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Adam Lambert scored his first No. 1, as his second album, Trespassing, arrived atop the list with 77,000. Tenacious D's Rize of the Fenix was the second-biggest debut, bowing at No. 4 with 49,000

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1562724/chart-moves-dixie-chicks-natalie-maines-makes-solo-debut-she-him-bows-onChart Moves: Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines Makes Solo Debut, She & Him Bows on CassetteBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the top three were all debuts, as Lady Antebellum, "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack and the "Now 46" compilation moved in. Lady A's latest, "Golden," gave the country trio its third No. 1 album, selling 167,000. Elsewhere on the Billboard 200 this week there were a number of movers and shakers. Let's take a look at some of them… -- Natalie Maines, "Mother" (No. 17): Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines debuts at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 with her first solo album, "Mother," selling 23,000 copies in its first week. It also bows at No. 4 on Rock Albums -- the highest-charting set from a solo woman since Lana Del Rey's "Paradise" EP also debuted at No. 4 on Dec. 1, 2012. Dixie Chicks, who have sold more albums than any other female group in the SoundScan era (27.2 million; 1991-present), last released a studio album in 2006 with "Taking the Long Way." The country trio's set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 2.5 million to date. While it's been a spell since the group last dropped a new album, its members have been busy with side projects. The other two-thirds the group -- Emily Robison and Martie Maguire -- formed Court Yard Hounds and released its self-titled debut on Columbia Records in 2010 (No. 7 debut and peak; 61,000). The duo's second album is due later this year. Dixie Chicks also have a smattering of concerts lined up this year -- their first since 2010. They'll play the KLRU All-Star Celebration Benefit Concert on May 16 in Austin, Texas, and then head to Canada for four festival dates starting on July 6 in Ottawa. -- Soundtrack, "Nashville: The Music of Nashville, Season 1, Volume 2" (No. 13): The second volume of music from the ABC TV series starts a bit softer than the first album, as the new set bows with 27,000. The first album started at No. 14 on the Dec. 29, 2012 list with 56,000 sold. So far, it has shifted 266,000. -- She & Him, "Volume 3" (No. 15): The album -- which debuts at No. 15 with 26,000 -- is likely the highest-charting set also available on cassette tape in a very long time. Sold for $9.99, the cassette also came with a download of the album. Label sources suggest that cassettes comprised about 1% of the set's overall first-week sales. -- Josh Groban, "All That Echoes" (No. 39): Mother's Day gift-giving likely spurs the 100% gain for Josh Groban's "All That Echoes," which rises 76-39 this week. It also racks up its best sales week (11,000; up 100%), since early April. -- Joe Satriani, "Unstoppable Momentum" (No. 42): The rock guitarist debuts his latest release at No. 42, immediately earning his highest-charting album since 1992's "Extremist" debuted and peaked at No. 22. As the new set also bows with 11,000, it's Satriani's best sales week since 2006's "Super Colossal" entered with 12,000. -- Alan Jackson, "Precious Memories" (No. 170): It's not surprising to see this collection of recordings -- originally intended as gift to his Jackson's mother -- see a jump in sales in the week ending Mother's Day. The album, first released in 2006, is up by 48% and re-enters at No. 170. Meanwhile its 2013 sequel, "Precious Memories: Volume II," gains by 106% in sales, rising 36-20.
