Cried Damn Passenger Kiss Me Coulda Been Me
Those are the only songs that struck me as being tailor made for her project. Everything else sounds like leftovers and reject ballads given to her just because she has a big voice.

AllMusic Review (3 Stars):
In a matter of four years, Candice Glover went from being told that her career wouldn't go farther than a hotel lobby, to recording a song co-written by her favorite artist. Descriptively dispatched by Simon Cowell during the Hollywood round of American Idol's ninth season, she returned for the 11th season and fared only a little better. On her third attempt, during season 12, she won the competition -- the first woman champion since season six's Jordin Sparks. Her progression through season 12 was built on traditionally minded, guts-spilling ballads originally recorded by the likes of Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Emeli Sandé, and Adele. Heartrending ballads are indeed what make up the majority of Music Speaks. Album opener "Cried," co-written by inspiration Jazmine Sullivan, lays it all out. Glover belts "I tried to be the girl that never complains, but holding it in is driving me insane" with such force that the sentiment is 100-percent believable. It's no outlier. In each song, Glover sings with complete conviction, best heard in the winding "Die Without You" (somewhat redolent of Usher's "There Goes My Baby"), the floating kiss-off "Thank You," and the self-smacking "Same Kinda Man" -- the last of which was written by producers Rock City and the Co-Captains, though it's easily mistakable for the work of Sullivan. Given the dominance of slow material, the album is a bit stifling; Glover loosens up a little for only "In the Middle," co-written by Fantasia Barrino with a touch of "Ting-a-Ling," yet even that has some heartache. At the end is "Love Song," a cover of the Cure's "Lovesong" that lacks the emotionally raw drama of the version she performed on American Idol. It closes Glover's debut on an anticlimactic note, but the singer should be around for a while -- hopefully long enough to make some albums that have as much character and boldness as Sullivan's Fearless and Love Me Back.

#8 on iTunes. $8.99 at Target. Unless those original pre-orders are included, if this sells over 25k, I'll be shocked.

I wanted to purchase this album since its announcement, but now I'm having trouble clicking "buy"... I'm just not impressed enough with the samples to spend the money.

I actually really like the album.
I'm not sure if the lack of buzz is informing people's aural perceptions upon first listen.

It's actually a pretty strong album, but I can see people being bored with it as it has a very mellow vibe. The only real single here is Kiss Me, which I think could be a decent sized R&B hit with a rapper with strong urban presence like Future. I really don't like In The Middle, but everything else are growers that are good records. It sucks that the big producers (Mike Will Made It, Darkchild) didn't come through with strong enough records to give her some hits, and I feel like there was a missed opportunity to work with Drake's producer.
Other than Kiss Me, my favorite record is easily Same Kind of Man even if it sounds like it should be a bonus track to Jazmine Sullivan's debut. One thing no one can say is that the girl isn't SANGIN on these records. This is one of those good records that people who want to learn how to technically sing runs and riffs should study. I would love to hear her own lyrics, bc even though she sings with conviction, it doesn't always feel believable.
I feel like she's gonna sell around 18k. There's just no buzz anywhere for this project. Really unfortunate.

Which will put her somewhere between #11 and #25, depending on how strong or weak overall sales are this week.

I feel like she's gonna sell around 18k. I better work for guessing right, but I was hoping I wouldn't be. I really think those iTunes pre-orders effed her sales up. I want to say it might've charted higher during that pre-order period than this actual release week, smh. I'm wondering if these are the lowest numbers for a winner.

I want to say it might've charted higher during that pre-order period than this actual release week, smh. I'm wondering if these are the lowest numbers for a winner. I'm pretty sure they are. The previous low was Lee DeWyze and I think I remember him doing 30-35k, somewhere in that range. All the negative comments actually had me putting off listening to the album b/c I was not ready for the disappointment, but I finally ripped off the band-aid and unlike most other people I think it's pretty good. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. The flaws - 1. It's a UAC geared album, immediately limiting its potential audience when the production could have easily been tweaked on the songs to make it more contemporary and, if not make it pop friendly, at least giving it some urban/rhythmic appeal. 2. Cried should not have been a single. 3. Die Without You is really nice as is, but while we're on the subject it should have been arranged as a pop power ballad and the sample made a little more prominent. Same goes for Passenger (minus the bit about the sample). Either one of these songs could have been a strong lead. 4. In the Middle is WACK, and Coulda Been Me isn't much better. The album is too short to have any room for filler like this. 5. Would it have killed them to have at least one guest rapper? This goes back to flaw #1 really. She's young, give her some youthful songs! Kiss Me with a 40 production and a Drake feature would have been clutch. Not really an album issue, but TY is basically a retooled I Am Beautiful, too bad it wasn't around when they were picking coronation songs.

I'm confused, do the people whose preorders got cashed back in October not get the actual album? Because didn't she have some decent pre-order sales? I can't believe that 18k also counts the people who were prepared to buy her album back when she had even a little bit of buzz in addition to people buying it this week.
I also listened to the album snippets again. The material isn't bad, it's just so disappointing and feels so undercooked. Everything from the production to the songwriting to the arrangement of her voice sounds so incredibly dated, cheap and out of touch. Not even in a soulful throwback way, it just feels like this album was made 10 years ago trying to channel the 90s. And like I said before, it's a shame because they could've easily made a really great album for her if they had tried to give her material that Jazmine, Jennifer or even K. Michelle would've been singing. The highlights for me would probably be Cried, Forever That Man and Kiss Me.

She's performing on Idol next Thursday. Performances probably won't help sustain any second week drop at all, but I figured I'd at least mention it. She's apparently doing "Cried" and "Same Kinda Man".

My understanding is that the people who preordered were refunded their money. So if you wanted the album you had to preorder (again) or remember to keep up with the moving release date and buy it when it finally came out. In the HITS thread I was saying the refunds were a bad idea - the label/iTunes should have instead sent out a simple statement apologizing for the mistake and saying that those who had preordered would receive the album when it's finally released. She'd gotten up to #4 on iTunes when the accidental downloads happened and I'm guessing she lost almost all of those sales b/c of people not bothering to do another preorder and probably not even knowing her album is out now. Sigh.

She has a lot of ear worms on there that initially sounded like duds to me because they weren't instant. It's definitely not something you can form an opinion on based off of the snippets. I had to listen to the album a couple of times to really appreciate it. To one of the earlier posters, I remember an interview of hers from like December where she spoke about trying to get Drake on the remix to one of the records, so hopefully her label and Drake care enough to come through for her...

From the HITS Daily Double Rumor Mill: So where are any of these 11,000 people to confirm whether or not their pre-order was fulfilled and/or refunded? lol

I pre-ordered. Might have been refunded but not sure. Believe it was 8 bucks so wouldn't have missed it coming or going. Definitely did not get album on release day though, had to buy it again.

I don't recall getting reimbursed, so that fucked a lot of people over. That, and Candice for sure lost those presales.

The album, after a few days of listening has a few standouts.
"Cried": is definitely an album gem, but I still can't get over the fact that it seems to end just when the song is warming up.... You're escalating to this big Mairah-like ending and then... nothing.
"Passenger": is a nice song too, it's actually one of the growers. Upon first listen, I was "over it" by the second verse, but a few more listens definitely helped the song, for me at least.
"Forever That Man": perhaps the best on the album? The chorus is gorgeous, vocals are stunning, lyrics are great - an excellent song!
"In The Middle": not exactly something I'd expect, but it's catchy and the vocals are killer!
"Coulda Been Me": is a great song, very catchy, but definitely not the best.
"Thank You": I absolutely love the structure and escalation of the chorus, it's definitely one of my favorites on the album - beautiful lyrics, production, vocals, etc...
.... Her cover of "Love Song" is killer, too, to be expected of course!

Not sure what's more depressing; her final total or the fact that an album selling less than 20k in a week can almost crack the top-10 in 2014.

WTF? I didn't even know this was out!!!! YIKES. What kind of nonexistent promo.........? I don't even think I saw her tweet that it was out. She was retweeting fan suggestions on what color to dye her hair last time I checked..
But I DLed it today. I pretty much like every song on the album. It definitely doesn't suck. It's really safe, and ALMOST crosses the boring line, but didn't get quite there. It's a pleasant listen. She sounds really good. But overall, this sounds like a collection of demos for other artists between 2006-2011. SHE is pretty forgettable, and so is this album. Damn shame. She's one of the best voices to come from Idol in a minute...

Did she get any promo for this outside of Idol? That's such a shame, Idol winners used to be such an event.

How many did Lee DeWyze sell in his first week, and where did his post- Idol album debut? #19 with 39k I don't remember exactly which chart it was, but with a release date of 11/16/2010, certainly he had the benefit of the holiday rush. Now, suppose if his album were released in February 2011, how many would he have sold in the 1st week?
