Week Ending June 30, 2013. Songs: Macklemore’s Timely Hit~~ Updated with positions below the Top 10! ~~Here’s another winner of last week’s historic Supreme Court decisions on gay marriage equality: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. “Same Love,” the pair’s plaintive song on the subject featuring Mary Lambert, leaps from #28 to #16 in its 16th week on the Hot 100. The hit is already #8 on Hot Digital Songs. The song sold 110K copies in the past week, its largest weekly sum to date. The song is just a week away from becoming a million-seller, which raises the question: Will Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ship off a gold record to the Supreme Court?
Other gay-friendly hits have charted, most notably Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which topped the Hot 100 for six weeks in February and March 2011, and Miley Cyrus’ current “We Can’t Stop,” which is more broadly a “do your own thing” kind of song, but includes these seemingly applicable lyrics: “It’s our party, we can love who we want/We can kiss who we want” and “Remember only God can judge us/Forget the haters ‘cause somebody loves ya.”
This isn’t the first time that a hit song has tied into current events. In March 1965, the same month that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 demonstrators on a 50-mile march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol in Montgomery, two classic songs about racial progress appeared in the top 40. Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” reached #31 the first week of March. The Impressions’ “People Get Ready” (written by group member Curtis Mayfield) hit #14 the last week of March. In June 1967, with civil rights still very much at the forefront, Aretha Franklin’s version of Otis Redding’s “Respect” hit #1. All three of these songs have been voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” hit #1 in December 1972, just as the women’s movement was cresting. Ms. Magazine began publication that January. The Senate passed the Equal Rights Amendment in March. Maude debuted on TV in September.
“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell tops the Hot 100 for the fourth week. The song sold 423K copies this week, down just slightly from last week’s tally of 424K. It’s the first song to top 400K two weeks in a row since “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which topped the mark three weeks running in April 2012.
Only three other songs in digital history have topped 400K in weekly sales two weeks in a row. They are Flo Rida’s “Right Round” (two weeks in February 2009), Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” (two weeks in December 2010-January 2011) and Lady Gaga’s aforementioned “Born This Way” (two weeks in February 2011). (One other song has topped 400K in weekly sales twice, but not in back-to-back weeks. That’s Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.,” which did it in October and December 2012.)
“Blurred Lines” tops the 2 million mark in sales this week. The song has sold more than twice as many copies as Thicke’s previous best-seller, “Lost Without U” (954K).
“Blurred Lines” appears to be in the midst of a very long run at #1 on the Hot 100. It has an advantage in that it shot from #6 to #1, so it didn’t waste time in runner-up slots on the way up. In addition, the song is #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the fourth week.
“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams is #2 for the third week. It’s #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for a seventh week.
Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” jumps from #5 to #3. It’s already Cyrus’ second biggest hit to date. Only 2009’s “Party In The U.S.A.” climbed higher (#2 for three weeks). “We Can’t Stop,” which is easily Cyrus’ edgiest hit, has surpassed the #4 peak of possibly her squarest hit, “The Climb.” The new song is vying to become the first song by a female solo artist (not a billed collabo) to reach #1 since Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”
Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” dips from #3 to #4. It’s #1 on Hot Rock Songs for the 15th week. It’s up to #17 on Nielsen SoundScan’s running list of the best-selling rock songs in its history.
“Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton rebounds from #6 to #5. As I noted earlier today in a Chart Watch Extra on the biggest songs and albums of the first six months, the duo has two songs in the mid-year top 10. “Thrift Shop” (featuring Wanz) is #1. “Can’t Hold Us” is #6. This marks the first time than an artist has had two songs in the mid-year top 10 since Katy Perry scored two years ago with “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West) and “Firework.” It marks the first time that a new artist has achieved the feat since B.o.B scored in 2010 with “Airplanes” (featuring Hayley Williams) and “Nothin’ On You” (featuring Bruno Mars).
“Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly drops from #4 to #6. The song has sold 4,748,000 copies, which puts it at #3 among all country songs in digital history. It trails only Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” (6,168,000) and Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” (5,587,000).
“Cruise” is #1 on Hot Country Songs for the 18th week. It’s the first song to spend 18 or more weeks at #1 on Hot Country Songs since Leroy Van Dyke’s “Walk On By” spent 19 weeks on top in 1961-1962. (That’s not the subsequent Burt Bacharach/Hal David song.). “Cruise” is the longest-running #1 by a group or duo ever.
Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” holds at #7 for the second week. The song is #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for the seventh week. It ties T.I.’s “Dead And Gone” (which featured Timberlake) for his personal best. The weird thing about that? Neither of these smash radio hits made #1 on the Hot 100. Both of these songs peaked at #2.
“The Way” by Ariana Grande featuring Mac Miller, which evokes the sound of vintage Mariah Carey hits, rebounds from #11 to #10. This is its fourth week in the top 10. At the same time, Carey’s current single, “#Beautiful” (featuring Miguel) dips another notch to #17. The song has climbed as high as #15. Nobody ever said the life of a diva was without frustrations.

The song has sold 1,366,000 copies, pretty good for someone who doesn’t even have a full-time music career.
