It occurs to me that this weekend(ish) marks the 25th anniversary of Shadoe Stevens taking over as the second regular host of American Top 40.
Casey Kasem departed from his creation the previous weekend. His departure came as a result of not being able reach an agreement with the ABC Radio Network on the renewal of his contact with them. Casey would be off the air for the remainder of the year and would, in the interim, sign on with Westwood One and develop his new show, and AT40 rival, Casey's Top 40 to debut in January 1989.
Shadoe introed his first show with a tribute to Casey and the show's history to that point. As far as I know, no extras were played. The Long Distance Dedication took a week off and returned on 8/20. Shadoe would, eventually, add new features to the show during his tenure like the Sneak Peek and the Flashback.
Some notable musical happenings from this period:
• This week's highest debut marks the first AT40 entry for New Kids On The Block. NKOTB would, of course, become global superstars troughout the next several years to the delight of teenage girls, everywhere. Impresario Lou Pearlman was fascinated by the group's success and would, in the coming years, attempt to replicate it by pumping out an, almost, endless stream of boy bands (most notable among them, Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync).
• The most notable one-hit wonder to debut this week -- Bobby McFerrin. "Don't Worry, Be Happy" became a huge hit and would go to #1 six weeks from now.
• Two other acts who had their first hits on this week's chart: DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (The Fresh Prince, himself, Will Smith, would go on to have continued solo success and make a name for himself as an actor) and Tracy Chapman (it would be another 7 years before she makes her second appearance -- her only #1, "Give Me One Reason").
• One of the biggest movies of the day was Dirty Dancing. The soundtrack was a big hit too. The Contours' 1962 single "Do You Love Me?" was rereleased and recharted after being used in the film. Eric Carmen's "Make Me Lose Control", undoubtedly, built off the success of his soundtrack single "Hungry Eyes".
Shadoe was the host of AT40 when I, first, discovered the show in 1991. I've always had a soft spot for his tenure as host. Here's how it all began...
