rafik4u- is there another single with more chart points than "Roar," that should be No. 1? How could anyone, including Billboard, have missed that? :o
Seriously- hasn't it been discussed a few hundred times that the chart is a measure of popularity, not perceived quality? :)
SPREE- that's the quick-cut info, which could differ a bit from the published-panel info. The audience showing on Hot AC and rhythmic wouldn't bring the gain down to that.
In any event, we know the BDS figure is 39 million (+7% from a week ago). :)

(UPDATE 2:30 ET: Due to a data error, the rankings for Jay Z and Lady Gaga were revised after posting.) Jay Z's "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) re-enters the Hot 100's top five, rebounding to its peak to date (6-5). Lady Gaga recedes 4-6 on the Hot 100 with "Applause," with which she opened the VMAs. Funny -- this is the exact opposite of what happened with Alejandro -- was originally at #6 and then the chart re-ran to have it at #5. So Gaga's karma has evened out now. :) |

There was another instance The Walmart box set of the Garth Brooks albums a couple years earlier would have been an easy #1 Then of course Michel Jackson was #1 for six weeks in 2009 |

I've tried again and again and again to listen to Royals and every time I have to shut it off by the first chorus, there's just nothing appealing about it for me. It's so....dull.

Around the time of the Eagles album release there was a reference to this being #1 had the numbers been released. It sold bunches. reference, the rapid increase in RIAA certs in 2006 I just listed the MJ album for completeness. |

LADY GAGA – Applause: 50.324 (+ 0.263) can someone explain how this is the end result of today's updates combined? Didn't it get a +0.625 on pop? Has there been a mistake? The updates are for all stations. It got +0.7AI on total for pop, -0.43AI for total Rhythmic then -0.01AI on total HAC based on Kworb. So it works out at about +0.26 when added together. |

An unassuming love letter-turned-song has become an historic hit, as "Oh Sweet Lorraine" by Green Shoe Studio featuring Jacob Colgan and Fred Stobaugh debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 42. The touching song swells to 100,000 downloads sold (up from 6,000 the week before), according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The chart will refresh on Billboardbiz tomorrow, Sept. 5.)
Stobaugh, the song's writer, is 96 years old, making him the senior-most credited artist to appear on the Hot 100 in the chart's 55-year archives. Born on Aug. 22, 1917, Stobaugh bests Tony Bennett, who was 85 years and two months old when "Body and Soul," with Amy Winehouse, spent a week on the survey (No. 87; Oct. 1, 2011).
Beyond any records, however, "Lorraine" seems most meaningful for its subject matter.
Stobaugh wrote "Lorraine" for his wife of 72 years, who died in April, and entered it in Peoria, Ill.-based Green Shoe Studio's songwriting contest. As Green Shoe Studio CEO/producer Colgan explains in the official documentary video of the song, which has drawn 3 million YouTube views since its July 19 posting, "Lorraine" stood out at first simply for how Stobaugh submitted it.
"It's an online contest. People [were] supposed to upload their videos," Colgan says. "But, we received a manila envelope. Lo and behold, it was a letter from a 96-year-old man who said, 'I've written a song for my [late] wife.' Listening to the passion behind the lyrics, it was just so heartwarming."

I didn't say anything about popularity. ;) I think Thinking Of You takes that crown easily with The One That Got Away being a distant second for worst single honors. I'd put Roar on part with Wide Awake. |

This is kind of cool.
Most chart records broken in the last few years have been made possible by itunes and the digital era. Biggest jumps to #1, most 'hits' etc.
Those are difficult to compare to prior eras because things are so different now but...
Recording a song at 96 and having it connect is amazing.

One should be able to figure out the HOT100 formula based on this week's BB column since the top 2 song's #s for all the sub-components have been provided. So far I have not had any luck, but I will keep trying.
