It's time for my Hot 100 questions! -How long will "Roar" stay on top? Do you think that the next #1 is in plain sight? (4 to 5 weeks)(Avicii and Lorde )-Will "Blurred Lines" leave the top 2 next week? If so, how many more weeks will it have at #2? (1 more week )-Will "Wake Me Up" go top 5 next week? (Probably, It would beat Berzerk and Applause)-Will "Royals" go top 5 next week? (This would probably beat Berzerk and Applause too)-Will "Berzerk" stay in the top 10? (8-10 maybe)-Will "Holy Grail" hit a new peak next week? (If it would have higher points than Wake me Up and Royals it is possible)-Will "Applause" hit a new peak next week? (Sadly , radio is Mileying her so probably #4 is the peak )-Will "Hold On, We're Going Home" enter the top 10 next week? (Hard to say but if "Radioactive" would give its slot it would)

I've tried again and again and again to listen to Royals and every time I have to shut it off by the first chorus, there's just nothing appealing about it for me. It's so....dull. I can't stand that weird thing her voice does from time to time during the song, but then again, I'm not exactly the audience they are aiming it at either. What is the audience she's aiming for, exactly? "Royals" is becoming a huge hit on HAC and AC stations.

Week Ending Sept. 1, 2013. Songs: Hear Katy “Roar”Katy Perry’s “Roar” jumps from #2 to #1 in its fourth week on the Hot 100. It’s Perry’s eighth #1 hit, a total matched by only five female solo artists since Billboard introduced the nation’s first weekly chart in 1940. Mariah Carey leads with 18, followed by Madonna and Rihanna (12 each), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10). (If you combine group and solo work, Diana Ross is tied with Carey with 18 #1 hits. Ross had 12 #1 hits with the Supremes and has had six in her solo career. Also, if you combine group and solo work, Beyonce has nine #1s. She had four with Destiny’s Child and has had five as a solo artist.) “Roar” is the first single from Perry’s third album, Prism, which is due Oct. 22. The first singles from her first two albums likewise reached #1. “I Kissed A Girl,” the first single from One Of The Boys, hit the top spot in its seventh week. “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), the lead single from Teenage Dream, hit the top in its fourth week. “Roar” is Perry’s seventh #1 of this decade. Since January 2010, only two artists have had seven #1 hits. Rihanna is the other. “Roar” is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the third straight week. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. “Roar” sold 448K copies this week. It’s only the third song by a female lead artist to top 400K in weekly sales twice. The first two were Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble. “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell dips to #2 following a 12-week run at #1. “Blurred Lines” is #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 13th week. It’s one week away from tying a record set earlier this year by “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz for the longest run at #1 on the R&B chart by a hit where the lead artist was white. “Thrift Shop” and “Blurred Lines” are both blockbuster hits, no doubt about it. And both have R&B influence and shading. But are they really two of the biggest R&B hits of all time—or just two blockbuster hits that happen to have R&B content? Discuss amongst yourselves. Eminem’s “Berserk” is the top new entry on the Hot 100 at #3. It’s Eminem’s 10th top five hit; his fourth to debut in the top five. (His other songs to debut in the top five were “Not Afraid,” which debuted at #1; “Love The Way You Lie” (featuring Rihanna), which debuted at #2 and rose to #1; and Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor” featuring Eminem and Skylar Grey, which debuted at #5 and peaked at #4. “Berserk” is Eminem’s sixth song to enter the Hot 100 inside the top 10. Billboard’s Gary Trust reports that only two other artists have had as many songs enter the Hot 100 in the top 10. Taylor Swift has had 11. Lil Wayne has also had six. “Berserk” sold 362K copies this week, a tally Eminem has reached twice before. “Crack A Bottle,” his 2009 collabo with Dr. Dre & 50 Cent, sold 418K in its first week. “Not Afraid,” his 2010 solo smash, sold 379K in its first week. “Berserk,” which enters Rap Songs at #1, is the first single from The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which is due Nov. 5. Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” dips from #3 to #4. (It’s #1 on Streaming Songs for a record-extending 11th week.) And Cyrus’ follow-up, “Wrecking Ball,” vaults from #50 to #14 in its second week. Both songs are ranked in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs. “Wrecking Ball” jumps from #13 to #5 on that chart (201K). “We Can’t Stop” drops from #7 to #9 (157K). No other artist has more than one song on this week’s digital sales chart. (At the VMAs, you might say she aimed low and hit her target.) Lady Gaga’s “Applause” dips from #4 to #5. It’s #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for the third week. Lorde, a 16-year old singer-songwriter from New Zealand, lands her first top 10 hit as “Royals” jumps from #12 to #8. It’s hard to believe that Lorde is just 16 when you hear this classy record. The spare, evocative song (some call it “chillwave”) has more in common with Adele’s striking hits than the bouncy hits we’ve gotten used to from America’s teen pop queens. Lorde (real name: Ella Yelich-O’Connor) has already made chart history as the first female “lead artist” to reach #1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart since Tracy Bonham scored in June 1996 with “Mother Mother.” Lorde is the youngest female “lead artist” ever to reach #1 on Alternative. That distinction had been held by Alanis Morissette, who was 21 when she topped Alternative for the first time in July 1995 with “You Oughta Know.” Lorde’s first full length album, Pure Heroine, is due Sept. 30, which (not coincidentally) is the last day of eligibility for next year’s Grammy Awards. Lorde has a very good chance of making the finals for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. (She co-wrote “Royals” with the hit’s producer, Joel Little.) “Royals,” which is currently in its fourth week at #1 on Alternative, is the 10th song by a female lead artist to reach #1 on that chart. Morissette had three of them: “You Oughta Know,” “Hand In My Pocket” and “Ironic.” Sinead O’Connor had two: “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” The other five are Kate Bush’s “Love And Anger,” Suzanne Vega’s “Blood Makes Noise,” Tori Amos’ “God,” Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” and now “Royals.” Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” drops from #5 to #9. This is its 20th week in the top 10; its 24th week at #1 on Rock Songs. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: Katy Perry’s “Roar” jumps from #2 to #1 in its fourth week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (448K)…“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell dips from #1 to #2 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 14th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (244K)… Eminem’s “Berzerk” debuts at #3. It’s his 15th top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #2 (362K)…Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” dips from #3 to #4 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (157K)… Lady Gaga’s “Applause” dips from #4 to #5 in its third week. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (213K). The Second Five: “Holy Grail” by Jay Z featuring Justin Timberlake holds at #6 for the second week in its eighth week on the chart. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Digital sales rank: #7 (170K)… Avicii’s “Wake Me Up!” holds at #7 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (176K)…Lorde’s “Royals” jumps from #12 to #8 in its ninth week on the chart. It’s her first top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #8 (167K)…Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” drops from #5 to #9 in its 53rd week on the chart. This is its 20th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #15 (92K)…“Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais dips from #9 to #10 in its eighth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (129K). Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Capital Cities’ “Safe And Sound” drops from its #8 peak. “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams drops from #10. It peaked at #2. “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Drake featuring Majid Jordan, which ranked #17 last week, is expected to move up. Digital sales rank: #10 (141K). “I Need Your Love” by Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding, which was #22 last week, tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s his fifth million-seller; her third. Here are key songs vying to enter the chart this week. “Oh Sweet Lorraine” by Green Shoe Studio featuring Jacob Colgan. This is the song that was created out of a poem written by Fred Stobaugh, a 96-year old widower in Peoria, Ill. Lorraine was his wife of 73 years, who died in April. Colgan set the poem to music. The human interest story has brought heavy TV and Web exposure to the song. Avril Lavigne’s “Rock N Roll.” It’s the second single from Lavigne’s fifth studio album, Avril Lavigne, which is due Nov. 5. A Led Zeppelin classic titled “Rock And Roll” reached #47 in April 1972. Three months later, Gary Glitter hit the top 10 with an instrumental titled “Rock And Roll Part 2.” John Legend’s “All Of Me.” It’s from his fourth solo studio album, Love In The Future, which is set to enter the top 10 on The Billboard 200 next week with first-week sales in the 50K range. Jason Derulo’s “Marry Me.” It’s from his third studio album, Tattoos, which is due Sept. 23. (Derulo’s girlfriend, Jordin Sparks, had a top 10 hit titled “Tattoo” in December 2007.) Cassadee Pope’s “11.” It’s from her debut album, Frame By Frame, which is due Oct. 8. Dierks Bentley’s “I Hold On.” It’s from his seventh major-label studio album, Riser, which is due later this year. Justin Moore’s “Off The Beaten Path.” It’s the title song from his third studio album, which is due Sept. 17. “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz tops the 7 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the sixth song to top 7 million. (A seventh, Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” will cross the threshold next week. It’s just 2K units away.) What was the first song to top 7 million? That would be the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” which achieved the feat the week ending March 20, 2011. J. Dash’s “Wop” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales his week. To My Readers: I’ll have more to add after I’ve seen the full Hot 100. Source: music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-sept-1-2013-songs-hear-katy-192236358.html

I can't stand that weird thing her voice does from time to time during the song, but then again, I'm not exactly the audience they are aiming it at either. What is the audience she's aiming for, exactly? "Royals" is becoming a huge hit on HAC and AC stations. And pop, and alternative, and AAA, and rhythmic... lol Yessssss!!! I assumed she was being aimed at a teenybopper audience. She's not my cup of tea regardless.

Really not surprised Katy took over #1...all week long we had the numbers to go by...so no shocker..I myself don't care for the song...but also not a huge fan of hers nor most of the female singers that are charting. I would rather Blurred Lines get 20 weeks at #1, too late...Avicii is awesome and hope he can make it to #1, but since that new (horrible) britney spears (not capitalized)(undeserved) is coming out with a new song...we all know who will be the next #1 (untalented)(horrific singing voice)....but we all lose our hearing at some point in life. It is also sad that that Sweet Lorraine song didn't do better, it goes to show people dont really care for older people here in the US. That is proven time and time again with the great OLDER artists who continue to release music yet radio wont play them and young people wont buy music by artists their parents grew up on.

It's time for my Hot 100 questions! -How long will "Roar" stay on top? Do you think that the next #1 is in plain sight? -Will "Blurred Lines" leave the top 2 next week? If so, how many more weeks will it have at #2? -Will "Wake Me Up" go top 5 next week? -Will "Royals" go top 5 next week? -Will "Berzerk" stay in the top 10? -Will "Holy Grail" hit a new peak next week? -Will "Applause" hit a new peak next week? -Will "Hold On, We're Going Home" enter the top 10 next week? 1.no more than 5 & that may be pushing it, yes the next number one is obvious, either Royals or Wake Me Up 2.Yes sales, streaming and airplay are falling 3/4.Since radio hates applause and beserk will obviously fall wake me up 7-4, royals 8-5. 5.Since holy grail may have enough points to beat BL, it will be 2/3 6.Since the radio pretty much hates applause 4 will be its peak. 7.since radioactive will sadly drop out, there will be a good chance of it happening.

I dont think the fact that hes old has to do with it, I realize the song is touching and all but the song itself is quite boring and the lyrics are meh. And maybe britney will turn a new leaf(probably not).

"Sweet Lorraine" is pretty much the "Clouds" of the moment. Both songs serve a nice purpose, but neither are anything you want to hear on the radio several times, and both will be forgotten quickly until someone goes, "Hey, remember that old guy that made that song for his dead wife?" or "Hey, remember the one guy who died and had that one song?" Neither are meant to be hits, but rather just a touching moment in the music industry.

My point I was trying to make about Sweet Lorraine was I never expected to hear it on the radio..except made on Delilah...is that older artists or singers are pushed aside no matter how much more impressive they are (with the vocal abilities)...to allow the likes of Demi, Miley, Lorde, gaga, rihanna, Katy, and not to mention any rap artists who think they are gods sell huge numbers and get played every hour. I would rather see the likes of Elton John, or Cher having top 10 hits than any of the forementioned artists.

yeah, how many more weeks does it look like Robin will stay at #2 (and who is likely to take over)? Im amazed at how fast and abruptly his song is falling in every way when it just kept getting bigger and bigger (like..for forever lol) and reeked from a serious contender for longest #1 of all time. Even though Mariah may be feeling relieved its kind of a double edged sword 'cause the singer who took over at #1 couldnt be hotter now and (like Mariah) at her peak, played it safe and rarely if ever f*cked up with single releases, success and timing. Both Katy and esp. Rihanna are both easily young enough and A+ radio royalty (as long as they dont do anything too crazy musically or in their personal lives) easily have a shot at getting the most #1s for a female. I normally wouldve first said Rihanna def. is within striking distance but I think Katy may now def. have a serious shot.

We all have our likes and dislikes and it seems whenever someone says something negative about any of the new Divas, people really chew ya a new one...Its my opinion..I won't say another word about them...but CHER and Madonna are still and always will be the Creme de la Creme!

You're gonna hear me ROOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR :'( :'( :'( Congrats to Katy on her eighth #1! Yay at "Royals" top 10. Damn "Blurred Lines" had a massive run at #1. :o 12 weeks is absolutely great and a smash but not 'massive'. Massive nowadays is 14 weeks or more imo. Since the 90s, there have def. been more than a few 12+ week #1s. Personally, I think BL (based on its insane record breaking airplay, continued strong sales w/ most of the weeks being massive, consistent strong streaming etc etc..actually deserved at least 14 weeks. I like Katy, but don't think Roar is even semi close to being one of her best songs and simply got to #1 due to her name brand popularity. Yes, BL def. was starting to get tired but I still think he lost #1 simply due to Katys name brand being like Madonna, MJ, Whitney and Janet in 1988. Shes just *that* big now even if the song is sub par. She played it safe...so safe she couldnt lose and even most people who thought it was meh from the beginning, admitted it was positively going to smash.

Hard to read? No.
Time consuming? Yes, but I find the article interesting, even more so than Billboards.

"Roar" didn't get to #1 because of her name. If so, it would've done so its second week when it shot to #2. If that was the only reason, it would be falling by now, but it's not. It's obviously connecting with people. Of course, she's at an advantage where whatever she releases will get noticed a lot faster than if someone else released the same song (see: Sara Bareilles), but it's not big now because of that reason. "Applause" had the same advantage "Roar" did and it's not #1 right now, and struggling a bit in airplay.
And how is 12 weeks not massive? It's the longest running #1 since "I Gotta Feeling" held it for 14 in 2009. It's tied for fourth longest-running #1 ever. Only nine songs out of over 1,000 have held the top spot for longer.

One Sweet Day Macarena We Belong Together I Gotta Feeling Candle In The Wind 1997 I Will Always Love You I'll Make Love To You So only these songs were massive? Of course no, many #1s and songs that didn't hit #1 were massive hits I mean BL has sold over 5 million, broke airplay records, 12 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, how is that not 'massive' enough? ...and the only that spent more than 14 weeks at #1 is "One Sweet Day".

Massive, but not on H100 - think about My Heart Will Go On. Airplay massive, TWO Diamond Albums with song at same time (Titanic soundtrack and Let's Talk About Love), but only 650,000 copies of single released, just so it could hit #1 because of Billboard "rules." Iris by Goo Goo Dolls - another example of a massive hit - same situation.
BL is unquestionably a "massive" song that will be a key track when this decade wraps. for all the reasons mentioned above. There aren't that many records that achieve across-the-board #1 (and it wasn't even a close situation on Pop, Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, Hot AC). It hit #3 on Spanish and Tropical and it's Top 10 in AC and wouldn't be surprised if it somehow climbs Top 3 there before holiday play kicks in.

We all have our likes and dislikes and it seems whenever someone says something negative about any of the new Divas, people really chew ya a new one...Its my opinion..I won't say another word about them...but CHER and Madonna are still and always will be the Creme de la Creme! Child... please stop while you're still behind.

Boo, your formatting needs some work. This was more difficult to read than any Yahoo! article. Also, I'm not going to say that ageism in the industry is non-existent, but its extent is overblown by some. Most older artists simply don't have an interest in putting out material aimed for pop success, which they are of course 100% entitled to. If the material isn't contemporary sounding, you can't expect them to be big mainstream hits.
