In Canada, don't know In the US, at first glance, Chubby Checker did the deed in 1960 and 1962 LeAnn Rimes also did it with How Do I Live in 1997 and 1998 Candle In The Wind 1997 was #1 in 1997 and #8 in 1998. Since Canada's HOT 100 does not include streaming (at least I don't think it does), its' results have started diverging somewhat from the US HOT 100. No "Harlem Shake" at #1.

11 weeks to go at #1 for "Iris" XD
The #1 song in the 20th anniversary of Billboard Mainstream Top 40. I don't think another song will ever top it.

Yah, the Canadian singles chart got real bad in the late 90s/early 2000s, when labels stopped issuing CD singles for the hits- it sorta was like what Hot 100 Single Sales became- only trouble was, that was Canada's official chart. In France they only started including downloads a few years ago, so until quite recently, their chart was only physical sales, and the figures were really low. Like really low, I think a song could chart with less than 10 sales at one point. And that was their official chart too.

Airplay has more weight than sales though on Canada's Hot 100. A song that's not even top 25 / top 30 on sales can go top 10 due to heavy airplay.

And now it's time once again to look back at the Billboard Top 10 singles for exactly 55, 50, 45, and 40 years ago this week.
September 8, 1958 (for week ending September 14)
TW LW WK 01 01 06 Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) - Domenico Modugno (3 weeks at #1) 02 02 06 Little Star - The Elegants 03 03 06 Bird Dog - The Everly Brothers 04 04 06 Just A Dream - Jimmy Clanton And His Rockets 05 06 06 Patricia - Perez Prado & His Orchestra 06 05 06 Poor Little Fool - Ricky Nelson 07 07 06 My True Love - Jack Scott 08 17 06 Rock-in Robin - Bobby Day 09 09 06 Ginger Bread - Frankie Avalon 10 14 06 Western Movies - The Olympics
September 14, 1963
TW LW WK 01 01 07 My Boyfriend's Back - The Angels (3 weeks at #1) 02 04 06 Blue Velvet - Bobby Vinton 03 03 08 If I Had A Hammer - Trini Lopez 04 02 07 Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp) 05 06 07 Heat Wave - Martha & The Vandellas 06 15 05 Then He Kissed Me - The Crystals 07 12 07 Surfer Girl - The Beach Boys 08 08 10 The Monkey Time - Major Lance 09 29 03 Sally, Go 'Round The Roses - The Jaynetts 10 07 13 Mockingbird - Inez Foxx (with Charlie Foxx)
History was made the week of September 14, 1968. For the first time since the 1958 inception of the Hot 100, an artist debuted within the the top 10. It had been over five months since the Beatles had released their last single, and so the anticipation for "Hey Jude" when it was released in late August 1968 was especially strong and so were its sales its first few days out. They were so strong in fact, that "Hey Jude" managed to debut at #10 on the Hot 100; the highest debut on the Hot 100 up until that time.
September 14, 1968

September 15, 1973
TW LW WK 01 03 13 Delta Dawn - Helen Reddy (1 week at #1) 02 01 10 Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye 03 04 10 Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose - Dawn featuring Tony Orlando 04 06 07 Loves Me Like A Rock - Paul Simon 05 08 08 We're An American Band - Grand Funk 06 02 13 Brother Louie - Stories 07 05 16 Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross 08 09 09 Gypsy Man - War 09 07 11 Live And Let Die - Paul McCartney & Wings 10 10 11 Here I Am (Come And Take Me) - Al Green

^ All 7 of those are very solid tracks imo. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we heard Maniac sampled on a modern pop hit at some point.

Replace that JT song that nobody is requesting or purchasing with Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" and move it into the Top 3. THEN you may have a point. (Also, replace Miley with Lana Del Rey- yes I'm quite a fan of "Summertime Sadness" now)

Why is it racist if you prefer certain kinds of music over other kinds? Some people don't like pop music. Some people don't like country music. Some don't like rap music. It happens.

Especially since the guy singing Wake Me Up is black, and Blurred Lines also features two black artists.
Not to mention Miley Cyrus.

As if I would ever use the word "hella" in seriousness, calm down cowboy! (But in reply to your new post: pretty sure people of color make music across multiple genres. Wouldn't know from that hypothetical Top 10 that, go figure, included two songs by white artists imitating black artists).

www.billboard.com/articles/news/5680123/avenged-sevenfold-earns-second-no-1-album-on-billboard-200Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry rules at No. 1 for a third week with "Roar," selling 448,000 downloads. The song gained 14% in weekly sales, thanks in part to Perry's performance of the cut on the Aug. 25 VMAs. "Roar" debuted at No. 1 with 557,000, then slipped to 392,000 in its second week. At No. 2 on Digital Songs this week is a new entry from Eminem, whose "Berzerk" blasts in with 362,000 downloads. "Berzerk" is the first single from "The Marshall Mathers LP 2," due Nov. 5. Sales for "Berzerk" are comparable to the first-week performance of his last album's first single, "Not Afraid." That 2010 song, which led "Recovery," bowed at No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart with 379,000. Eminem's 'Berzerk' Headed For Big Chart Debut Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, falls 2-3 this week with 244,000 (down 3%). Lady Gaga's "Applause," meanwhile, rises 5-4 with 213,000 (up 31%). "Blurred Lines" and "Applause" were both performed on the VMAs. (A decline for "Blurred" this week isn’t surprising, as the song had already peaked in sales weeks ago. This is its fourth consecutive weekly dip in sales.) Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus — who sang "Blurred Lines" on the VMAs with Thicke after performing her hit "We Can't Stop" — jumps 13-5 with her new track, "Wrecking Ball." It moved 201,000 downloads in its first full week on sale (up 124%), after bowing last week with 90,000 after less than two full days of availability. (It went on sale on Saturday, Aug. 24.) Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" is pushed back 3-6, despite a 1% gain this week. It sold 176,000, up from 175,000 a week ago. Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Timberlake, falls 4-7 with 170,000 (down less than 1%). Lorde's "Royals," like "Wake Me Up!," is also forced down the chart, slipping 6-8 with 167,000, though it gains by 16%. Cyrus also has another song in the top 10: "We Can't Stop" descends 7-9 with 157,000 (though it's up by 10%). It was part of a three-song medley that Cyrus performed on the VMAs with Thicke, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar. Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" (featuring Majid Jordan), another cut performed on the VMAs, returns to the top 10 after a two-week absence, climbing 12-10. The song moved 141,000 downloads — up 57%. Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.6 million downloads, up 2% compared with last week (22.1 million) and down less than 1% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (22.6 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 888 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (916.3 million).

So, "Roar" has a 204K sales advantage. Its BDS airplay probably will trail by some 120m or so?

That should be enough for Roar I think. Does anyone know what the difference in streaming was last week?

Using the airplay/7500 and digital sales/12 formula (not completely accurate)
Blurred Lines: 210m AI, 244k sales = 20333 + 27973 = 48306 Roar = 97m AI 448k sales = 12938 + 37333 = 50271
It all comes down to streaming.
Last week Robin had 6.1 million streams, down 8%, and Katy had 4.7 million, up 24%. This week they should be around the same, with a small lead for Katy in streaming.
BUT then we have to remember that this formula predicted an 8% difference between Roar and Blurred Lines during its debut week, and it turned out to only be 3%. Meaning the BB formula gives a bit more points to airplay than this one, which would put Katy and Robin at basically a tie... Going to be a nailbiter.

Looks like "Roar" is a lock for #1, especially since it is now #1 on Spotify with more than 1.9M streams. This weeks Digital Songs top 10 is a good reminder of how misleading chart movement can be. "Wake Me Up" and "Royals" both increased by more than 10% but lost 2 positions.

Ooooooh Shitttttt. its going to be very close.. i fear Robin might just sneak it. It depends on what weighting one gives to downloads. The last known weighting was 12:1, I have been using 9:1. If it is 12:1, then "Roar" has about an 17,000 point advantage in sales. If airplay difference is 120M and using 7,500:1 as the weighting, Blurred Lines has a 16,000 point advantage. So Blurred Lines would have to make up a 1,000 point deficit in streaming. Roar is leading Blurred Lines on Spotify by 429,000 on demand streams which makes Blurred Lines task that much more difficult. Now if you believe like me that weighting for sales is 9:1 then "Roar" has no problems hitting #1.

Spotify is but just one component in streaming, though.
Nonetheless, "Roar" probably will climb to the top.
