I had the privilege of looking through Billboard's Hardcover Country Singles chart book yesterday (it only goes up to early '02).
Why does no one ever cite Jo Dee Messina as a hot force on the charts? You never hear a thing about her in comparison to Shania, Martina, Faith, and Lee Ann "Can Do No Wrong in Any Country Fan's Mind" Womack, but my goodness, she had one heck of a hot streak. Maybe she didn't have the same peaks on "R&R," but there was a string of chart-toppers and top 10's on BILLBOARD ... yes, I know everybody probably thinks she "failed" with the songs from Greatest Hits, but as I don't think a #15 peak ("I Wish") is a failure, I can't agree ... especially since she managed to score it at the tail end of the No Women Allowed year.
Just wanted to say props to Jo Dee for a hot chart streak, currently being continued with "My Give A Damn's Busted."
p.s. I saw a profile of her on CMT in which it talked about how proud she was to lose weight and then the fans ridiculed her for showing her "scars" ... well, I say shame on you to any of you who put her down for not looking like a precious Barbie doll

She's been hot, but not as much lately. I didn't include her in the roundup of the other ladies because they have a good 10 Top 40 hits more than her.

Since it was such a HUGE hit for her, you may want to cite how many wks she was at #2 with Lesson in Leavin'.

I know "Lesson in Leavin" is her biggest hit to date. It has been played 357,943 times, compared to "Bye Bye" which has been played 297,997. Thats actually quite a bit more plays if you ask me!

I believe "Lesson In Leavin'" was #2 for about 9 weeks. I know it was stuck behind "Amazed" for probably about 7 of those weeks.
As far as i'm concerned, Jo Dee has been the most consistant both musically and on the charts as far as Women of country are concerned..She's probably one of the most underrated artists out there.
I'm so excited to see her new single do so well and I really really hope this album hits as big or bigger than her "I'm Alright" album. She deserves it.

I guess LIL's weeks at #2 would depend on the trade magazine. On Billboard, I know it spent 7 weeks at #2, all of which behind Lonestar's monster smash (which spent 8 weeks at #1).
On R&R, "Amazed" spent 9 weeks at the top, so perhaps Jo Dee also got an extra week at #2, but I don't think so. I'm guessing either "Single White Female" or "You Had Me From Hello" moved up (and possibly peaked) at #2, or "Write This Down" spent an extra week at #2 on the way down.

She's been a great seller as well...here is how her albums have sold:
1996: Jo Dee Messina - 454,527 1998: I'm Alright - 2,099,534 2000: Burn - 1,221,180 2002: Joyful Noise (Christmas Album) - 101,902 2003: Greatest Hits - 497,136
Her "Greatest Hits" was up 61% in sales -- it re-entered the Country album charts several weeks ago and jumped from No. 70 to No. 56 this week.
