I just wanted to let u all know, since the last thread is closed...I'm all for stations playing gold and recurrents....variety is the spice of life after all. I'm really sick of pop stations playing "yeah" 25x/day. Seriously, the station in milwaukee plays its top 5 songs between 85-110x/week... that means you will hear it again about every 80-90 mins!!!! It wears out a song within a week for the most part for me. I like AC stations, where you can hear songs from 10+ years ago on a regular basis...provided that they don't play the same ones over and over and over. I even wrote the station manager at our new "hits of the 80s" station here. I was hearing the same 5 or so songs over and over and over....nearly every day. That's not acceptable IMO for an all gold station. They got 20,000 songs to play from, mix it up a little....they are better now

This is how I think it should be..60% of an hour dedicated to current music.
1. Current 2. Current 3. Current 4. Current 5. Current 6. Current
The final 4 songs can be gold or recurrent
7. Gold/Recurrent 8. Gold/Recurrent 9. Gold/Recurrent 10. Gold/Recurrent
Also, they should also try to implement the rule: hear an artist one hour, don't hear them again for 2 hours. So, let's use Shania:
10-11: Shania 11-12: No Shania 12-1: No Shania 1-2: Shania
You get the pattern...you hear the same artists too many times with the same songs you have heard the last 5 months. The new music right now is great! Give it a chance. If there is no single, obviously to keep the artist hot you have to play recurrent/gold. But just because a single isn't performing well doesn't mean you should ignore it.
I am all for letting the listeners decide. Not through "callouts". I mean live ballots and polls. Each day have them rate 5 songs. The top songs get put high on the playlists. Listen to the requests. If Gretchen is getting 10 requests an hour to Martina's 4 then play Gretchen more. But if it is Shania 10 to Kenny 2 don't play Kenny because nationally he ranks higher or is charting better. Listen to your own market.
And weight should be done with. It's not fair that one station, KZLA, can decide if a single goes #1 or peaks #2. All KZLA should have the privlege is saying 'we have more listeners per spin than every other station'.

Sorry, I'd like to hear some Alabama, older George Strait, earlier Tim, even some of the Oak Ridge Boys bigger hits, Statler Brothers, Bellamy Brothers, etc mixed in with today's music. I loved listening to our AC station when it was up when I had it on all day at work....you NEVER EVER EVER heard the same song during an 8 hour period. So in that case, I didn't mind hearing My heart will go on 1x/day for 8 months in a row. That's only about 160 plays that I heard on that station for instance. Now you take a country station or worse....a top 40 station. One day at work we had the top 40 station on, and Amazed was not a big hit, more medium sized...I counted 8 times in 1 day I heard that song. Again, that was not their most played song. I personally would like to see most stations not play the same song twice in any given 4 hours or maybe even 6.
On a side note....it's really amazing how true Bowling for Soup's 1985 song is true. It's sad that Motley Crue is considered classic rock now. The same is true with country music....anything over about 4 years seems to be a classic and seldom heard.

Don't get me wrong. I love the older music from 10 years ago. I think country has a problem with recurrents, not golds. But more current material needs to be played..

The fact that 'When The Sun Goes Down', 'Remember When' & 'Letters From Home', which ranked #2, #1 & #3 for the year in R&R LAST Year, currently sit at #36, #40 & #42 for THIS year is insane.
Too many stations are leaning WAAAAAYYYY too much on their recurrents, and not giving enough exposure to the tons of new artists who've made their debuts on the charts over the past 18 months.

Exactly... we have a local station, who I only heard three current singles on during a two and a half hour roundtrip on the road just Monday.
They played: "Anything But Mine" "Baby Girl" "Honkytonk U"
But in that same time, I heard Kenny 3 other times, Lonestar twice, Alan Jackson twice, and Toby Keith one other time.
Kenny: "When The Sun Goes Down" "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" "How Forever Feels"
Lonestar: "Mr. Mom" "My Front Porch Lookin' In"
Alan Jackson: "5:00 Somewhere" "Monday Morning Church"
Toby Keith: "Stays In Mexico"
** I remember all this because I wrote it down and emailed the station when I got home. **
