www.billboard.com/articles/news/5725173/jack-johnson-scores-fourth-no-1-album-on-billboard-200Jack Johnson Scores Fourth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | September 25, 2013 Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson claims his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as "From Here to Now to You" bows atop the list with 117,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The new effort is his third consecutive studio set to debut at No. 1, following "Sleep Through the Static" (2008) and "To the Sea" (2010). (He also opened at No. 1 with his soundtrack to the film "Curious George" in 2006.) "From Here to Now to You," however, starts with Johnson's lowest debut sales week since his first album, 2001's "Brushfire Fairytales." That set arrived in February of that year, selling fewer than 1,000 copies in its first week. Comparably, Johnson's last two albums started with more than twice the opening sum of "From Here." His last studio set, "To the Sea," sailed in with 243,000, and "Sleep Through the Static" bowed with 375,000. Johnson leads a debut-filled top 10, where all of the top five titles are new entries for the first time in a little more than a year. That last occurred on the Sept. 29, 2012, chart (reflecting the sales week ending Sept. 16) when Dave Matthews Band, Little Big Town, Bob Dylan, the Avett Brothers and the xx started at Nos. 1-5, respectively. About 20,000 copies behind Johnson this week is country singer Justin Moore, who logs his best sales week yet with his new album, "Off the Beaten Path." It debuts at No. 2 with 97,000 and secures him a second No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. The new set is his third full-length studio album, following "Outlaws Like Me" in 2011 and his self-titled debut in 2009. The former bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 65,000 in its first week. The self-titled album entered at No. 10 with 34,000. "Off the Beaten Path" is currently enjoying a No. 2 single on the Country Airplay chart: The song "Point at You" rises 3-2 this week. Moore's "Off the Beaten Path" is one of five country albums in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 this week—the most in the region in more than three years. Joining Moore in the country parade are the debuting Chris Young ("A.M." at No. 3) and Billy Currington ("We Are Tonight" at No. 10), along with Luke Bryan ("Crash My Party," moving 4-6 in its sixth week with 47,000; down 11%) and Keith Urban ("Fuse," falling 1-8 in its second week with 31,000; down 69%). Country last swamped the top 10 with five titles way back on Oct. 30, 2010. That week, Darius Rucker's "Charleston, SC 1966" (No. 2), the Band Perry's self-titled album (No. 4), Kenny Chesney's "Hemingway's Whiskey" (No. 6), Zac Brown Band's "You Get What You Give" (No. 8) and Toby Keith's "Bullets in the Gun" (No. 9) reigned in the top 10. Young's "A.M." bows with 53,000 and becomes his highest-charting album (though not his best sales week). It’s his second top 10 effort, following 2011's "Neon," which claimed his biggest sales week when it started with 73,000 at No. 4. Currington, meanwhile, nets his second top 10 album, as "We Are Tonight" enters with 26,000. That's a smaller start than what he saw with his last album (and previous top 10 set), 2010's "Enjoy Yourself." It bowed at No. 9 with 45,000. In the No. 4 slot this week is the debuting compilation "MMG: Self Made 3," with 50,000. The Maybach Music Group-branded release features contributions from Meek Mill, Wale, Rick Ross and others. It's the third consecutive "Self Made" compilation to bow in the top five. The first started at No. 5 with 59,000 in 2011, while the second launched at No. 4 with 98,000 in 2012. One more debut populates the action-packed top five this week: Avicii's "True" starts at No. 5 with 50,000. It marks the biggest bow for a solo EDM artist's first studio album. The set's smash hit single, "Wake Me Up!," rises 8-4 on the Pop Songs airplay chart this week (known as Mainstream Top 40 on billboard.biz). A whopping 91% of first-week sales for “True” were downloads, equating to 45,000 digital albums. Comparably, 68% of the first-week sales for Johnson's No. 1 debut were from digital sales (80,000 downloads). To finish wrapping up the top 10 this week: 2 Chainz's "B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME" slips 3-7 with 35,000 (down 46%), and the Weeknd's "Kiss Land" falls 2-9 with 26,000 (down 73%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, history is made. The top three songs each sell in excess of 300,000 downloads for the first time outside of the Christmas holiday season. Lorde's "Royals" jumps 3-1 with 307,000—up 17% for its first week at No. 1 and best sales week yet. Behind her is Katy Perry's "Roar," which holds steady at No. 2 with 301,000 (down 10%) and Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," down 1-3 with a little more than 301,000 as well (down 37%). (The sales of both titles have been rounded to the nearest thousand. "Wrecking Ball" is behind "Roar" by a margin of less than 1% in sales.) The top three songs on the tally have each moved 300,000 downloads in six previous weeks, but all were during the post-Christmas time period. That's when digital song sales are extraordinarily high thanks to consumers redeeming just-received gift cards. Perry has a second song in the top 10 this week, as her new track "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J) bows at No. 4 with 194,000. Right behind it is Avicii's "Wake Me Up!," which slips one rung to No. 5 with 189,000 (down 6%). Britney Spears' "Work B**ch!" debuts at No. 6 with 174,000 downloads. It's the first single from her forthcoming studio album, due in December. Comparably, her last album's first single, "Hold It Against Me," launched with 411,000 in January 2011. Lady Gaga's "Applause" is down 13% this week, slipping 5-7 with 160,000. Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" (featuring Majid Jordan) is steady at No. 8 with 150,000 (up 5%). Eminem's "Berzerk" descends 6-9 with 147,000 (down 11%), and Jay Z's "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) moves 7-10 with 134,000 (down 8%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 22) totaled 4.543 million units, up less than 1% compared with the sum last week (4.541 million) and down 16% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.42 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 200 million, down 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (212.7 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 21.9 million downloads, down 1% compared with last week (22.1 million) and down 7% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (23.5 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 954.3 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (986 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Mumford & Sons' "Babel" debuted at No. 1 with 600,000 sold, while Green Day's "Uno!" bowed at No. 2 with 139,000. The previous week's leader, P!nk's "The Truth About Love," fell to No. 4 with 94,000 (down 66%).

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-sept-22-2013-albums-aloha-hawaii-152823767.htmlWeek Ending Sept. 22, 2013. Albums: Aloha From Hawaii Via ChartsPaul Grein - Chart Watch Sept. 25, 2013 Hawaii is the 40th most populous U.S. state, but it's currently near the top in terms of musical output. Jack Johnson this week becomes the second native of Hawaii to land a #1 album on The Billboard 200 in 2013. The surfer-turned-balladeer scores with From Here To Now To You. Bruno Mars rose to #1 in March with Unorthodox Jukebox. Johnson, 38, first topped the chart in 2006 with the Curious George soundtrack. He returned to #1 with 2008's Sleep Through The Static and 2010's To The Sea. For all his success with albums, he's had just two top 40 singles: "Upside Down" (from Curious George) and "You And Your Heart." A third native of Hawaii, Yvonne Elliman, appeared on two iconic, multi-artist albums that hit #1: Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (1978). Three other natives of Hawaii have had top 10 albums. Nicole Scherzinger reached the top 10 as part of two female groups: Eden's Crush (#6 in 2001) and the Pussycat Dolls (#5 in 2005 and #4 in 2008). Bette Midler climbed as high as #2 in 1989 with her highest-charting album, the Beaches soundtrack. Arthur Lyman rose as high as #6 in 1959 with Taboo. All of the above-named Hawaiians were born in Honolulu, except for Johnson, who was born on the North Shore of Oahu. (Martin Denny, whose Exotica topped the chart for five weeks in 1959, lived in Hawaii for more than 50 years, but was born in New York.) This week's headline is of course a play on Elvis Presley's 1973 album Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite. The double-disk live album knocked Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon out of the #1 spot (!) in May 1973. Johnson's album sold 80K digital copies (out of 117K total), which also puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. Shifting gears, country music accounts for five albums in this week's top 10. That's remarkable because it's not, say, the week following the Country Music Assn. Awards. But, as we've seen, country sells week-in and week-out. Leading the country pack is Justin Moore’s third studio album, Off The Beaten Path, which debuts at #2. Moore just missed becoming the third "Justin" to reach #1 in 2013. Justin Bieber hit #1 in February with Believe Acoustic. Justin Timberlake logged three weeks on top in early spring with The 20/20 Experience. All three of Moore's albums have made the top 10. Justin Moore hit #10 in August 2009. Outlaws Like Me hit #5 in June 2011. Moore's album enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Keith Urban's Fuse. It's Moore's second #1 country album. Outlaws Like Me interrupted Jason Aldean's run at #1 with My Kinda Party in the summer of 2011. Chris Young's fourth studio album, A.M., debuts at #3. It's his second top five album in a row. Neon hit #4 in July 2011. (We nearly had two albums with nearly identical titles in the top 10 at the same time. Arctic Monkeys' AM drops from #6 to #28 in its second week.) Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made: Vol. 3 debuts at #4. The album features Rick Ross, Wale and Meek Mill, among others. All three volumes have made the top five. Vol. 1 reached #5 in May 2011. Vol. 2 hit #4 in June 2012. This is only the second time that a record label or music group has had three self-saluting compilation albums that made the top 10. The first came in 1960-1961, when mighty RCA Victor hit the top 10 with 60 Years Of Music America Loves Best and three sequels. (Those albums were pop samplers. The fourth was a classical sampler from its Red Seal label.) Avicii's debut album, True, debuts at #5. The Swedish DJ has a top five hit on the Hot 100, "Wake Me Up!" Guests on the album include Nile Rodgers and Adam Lambert. (Spandau Ballet's 1983 album True peaked at #19.) Lorde's "Royals" jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (307K), displacing Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" (301K). Also of note: Three songs top 300K in digital sales (the aforementioned two and Katy Perry's "Roar," also 301K). This is the first time that has ever happened outside of the weeks that include and/or follow Christmas. Will "Royals" also displace "Wrecking Ball" at #1 on the Hot 100? Or will "Wrecking Ball" eke out a second week on top? Or will "Roar" return to the summit? You'll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Jack Johnson's From Here To Now To You debuts at #1 (117K). It’s his sixth top 10 album…Justin Moore’s Off The Beaten Path debuts at #2 (97K). It's his third top 10 album…Chris Young's A.M. debuts at #3 (53K). It's his second top 10 album… Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made: Vol. 3 debuts at #4 (50K). All three volumes have made the top 10… Avicii's True debuts at #5 (50K). It's his first top 10 album. The Second Five: Luke Bryan's Crash My Party drops from #4 to #6 in its sixth week (47K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…2 Chainz's B.O.A.T.S. 2# METIME drops from #3 to #7 in its second week (35K)…Keith Urban's Fuse drops from #1 to #8 in its second week (31K)… The Weeknd's Kiss Land drops from #2 to #9 in its second week (26K)…Billy Currington’s We Are Tonight debuts at #10 (26K). It's his second top 10 album. Arctic Monkeys' AM drops from #6 to #28 in its second week. The album holds at #1 for the second week on the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart. Five other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Janelle Monae's The Electric Lady drops from #5 to #23. Sheryl Crow's Feels Like Home drops from #7 to #24. Tamar Braxton’s Love & War drops from #8 to #11. Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly drops from #9 to #15. John Legend’s Love In The Future drops from #10 to #13. MGMT’s third studio album, MGMT, debuts at #14. It’s their second top 20 album in a row. Congratulations reached #2 in April 2010. Elvis Costello and the Roots' Wise Up Ghost debuts at #16. It's Costello's fifth top 20 album; the Roots' eighth. (It's not really fair to compare the two artists' tallies. Costello was active in the '80s when it was considerably harder to make the top 20.) Costello has previously charted with album-length collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Burt Bacharach and Allen Toussaint; The Roots made the top 10 with an album-length collabo with John Legend. Bacharach received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Costello is about due for one too, come to think of it. The Grateful Dead's Sunshine Daydream debuts at #19. The three-CD (or four-LP) set was recorded in August 1972 at the band's concert at the Old Renaissance Faire Grounds in Veneta, Ore. There is also a music documentary by this title. The legendary band first cracked the top 20 with Wake Of The Flood in the issue dated Dec. 8, 1973, giving them a nearly 40-year span of top 20 albums. The Devil Wears Prada's fifth studio album, 8:18, debuts at #20. It's their fourth top 20 album or EP. Grouplove’s second studio album, Spreading Rumours, debuts at #21. The act's debut, the intriguingly titled Never Trust A Happy Song, reached #75. Imagine Dragons' Night Visions drops from #23 to #25 in its 55th week. The album this week becomes the third album to reach the 1 million mark in 2013 sales (1,013,000, to be precise). It follows Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience (2,280,000) and Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (1,215,000 sold this year). Two more albums are poised to cross the 1 million threshold next week. Mumford & Sons' Babel has sold 994K copies so far this year. Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail has sold 990K. Assuming those two make it next week, that would be just five million-selling albums in the first nine months of the year. That is, to put it mildly, not so hot. But, amazingly, it would be better than last year, when there were only three million-selling albums in the first nine months of the year. It would put 2013 on par with 2011, when there were also five million-sellers in the first nine months. Without going back to the boom years, when albums were selling like, well, albums, let's look at the number of million-selling albums in the first nine months of each calendar year since 2004, per Nielsen SoundScan's official counts. 2004: 36; 2005: 27; 2006: 28; 2007: 20; 2008: 11; 2009: 11; 2010: 8; 2011: 5; 2012: 3; 2013: 5 (projected). America, you're just going to have to buy more albums. The Teen Beach Movie soundtrack drops from #25 to #34 in its 10th week. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 10th week. It’s the first TV soundtrack (from a made-for-TV movie or a series) to top this chart for 10 or more weeks since High School Musical 2 was #1 for 17 weeks in 2007. The Great Gatsby: Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film drops from #39 to #66 in its 20th week. It’s the week’s highest-ranking soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie for the 10th non-consecutive week. Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans drops from #82 to #91 in its 153rd week. It’s #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 11th week. That's the most weeks that an album by a male artist has logged at #1 on this chart in a calendar year since Michael Jackson's Number Ones spent 19 weeks on top in 2009. All of those weeks came after his death that June. Madonna's MDNA World Tour holds at #1 on Top Music Videos for the second week. The video sold 3K copies this week amid reports of manufacturing defects. At least those reports let people know that a) Madonna has a music video out and b) they still make music videos. Madonna's MDNA album logged one week atop The Billboard 200 in April 2012. Prisoners was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Coming Attractions: Drake’s Nothing Was The Same is expected to debut at #1 next week. Also due: Kings of Leon’s Mechanical Bull, Elton John’s The Diving Board, Cher’s Closer To The Truth, Sting’s The Last Ship, Alan Jackson’s The Bluegrass Album, Icona Pop’s This Is…, Metallica's Metallica: Through The Never, Nirvana's In Utero 20th anniversary edition, Glee Cast's Glee Sings The Beatles, Dream Theater’s Dream Theater, Sammy Hagar's Sammy Hagar & Friends, Krewella's Get Wet, Wow Hits 2014, Gov’t Mule’s Shout! and R5’s Louder.

Kendrick's sales are extremely impressive. He's sold close to Macklemore, who's had great pop success and outsold Frank Ocean, whose album was a bigger critical darling.

^This year will end with more million sellers than 2012.
Last year we had 10. This year, we may have 13.

^Yep- as well as Current Albums. Even a soft decline wouldn't have kept it on the chart (i.e. a 50% dip would have brought it down to 2K, not enough for the BB 200).

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/digital-and-mobile/5740615/chart-moves-grateful-deads-highest-charting-album-sinceChart Moves: Grateful Dead's Highest Charting Album Since 1987, Mumford & Sons' 'Sigh' Hits 3 Million & Josh Groban's TV-Fueled Return By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | September 27, 2013 11:59 PM EDT This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Jack Johnson scored his fourth No. 1, as "From Here to Now to You" arrived atop the list with 117,000 sold in its first week (according to Nielsen SoundScan). Also noteworthy was how there were five country albums in the top 10 for only the fourth time since the chart began using SoundScan data in May of 1991. Outside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 there were a number of movers and shakers, as usual. Let's take a look at some of them: -- Robin Thicke, "Blurred Lines" - No. 12 - His sixth album, "Blurred Lines," becomes his second-largest seller this week, as it moves another 19,000 (down 10%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) to bring its cumulative sum to 489,000. Of his releases, only 2006's "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" has sold more, with 1.7 million. -- Elvis Costello and the Roots, "Wise Up Ghost and Other Songs 2013" - No. 16 - Costello's collaboration with the Roots gives him his fourth-highest charting album ever. Only "Armed Forces" (No. 10, 1979), "Get Happy!!" (No. 11, 1980) and "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane" (No. 13, 2009) have gone higher. -- Grateful Dead, "Sunshine Daydream: Veneta, Oregon - August 27, 1972" - No. 19 - Grateful Dead notch its highest-charting album since 1987 on the Billboard 200, as its new archival live release, "Sunshine Daydream: Veneta, Oregon - August 27, 1972," debuts at No. 19. The band last went higher with "In the Dark," which climbed to No. 6 off the strength of the group's only top 40 Billboard Hot 100 single: "Touch of Grey" (No. 9 peak). The 16,000 start marks the largest sales week for Grateful Dead since October of 2008, when "Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978" bowed with a handful of units more than Sunshine (but still rounded to 16,000). The new album's sales were powered largely by orders placed on the band's official Web site, Dead.net. (It offered a number of exclusive, limited-edition versions of the album.) -- Jonny Lang, "Fight For My Soul" - No. 50 - The singer/guitarist locks up his fourth No. 1 on Blues Albums with his first studio set for Concord Records, which also debuts at No. 50 on the Billboard 200. The new album additionally bows at No. 2 on Top Christian Albums, marking Lang's second title to chart on the Christian tally (following the No. 1 "Turn Around" in 2006). -- Zendaya, "Zendaya" - No. 51 - The 17-year old singer/actress (Disney Channel's "Shake It Up") bows with her debut album, selling 7,000. The set's single "Replay" rises 15-11 on Dance Club Songs this week and is getting a smattering of play at top 40 radio. 13 of the top 40 panel's 164 stations played the cut this week, according to Nielsen BDS. -- Mumford & Sons, "Sigh No More" - No. 84 - The folk/rock quartet sees its debut effort sail past the 3 million mark (3.004 million). It continues to reign as the fifth-largest selling folk album of the Nielsen SoundScan era (1991-present). -- Ellie Goulding, Frank Sinatra and the National - Nos. 88, 102 and 114 - After Sinatra's "Sinatra: Best of the Best" was discounted to $5 in the Amazon MP3 store, it returns to the tally at No. 102 with 4,000 sold and a weekly gain of 185%. Meanwhile, Ellie Goulding's "Halcyon" takes Greatest Gainer honors at No. 88 (up 39%) after iTunes promoted her set for $6.99. Like the Sinatra album, the National's "Trouble Will Find Me" was also sale priced at Amazon for $5. With a little over 3,000 sold, it re-enters at No. 114, logging its highest rank since the July 27 chart (No. 100). -- Josh Groban, "All That Echoes" - No. 124 - Following performances on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and NBC's "America's Got Talent" (both on Sept. 18), his album zips back onto the list with a 115% sales spike and its best sales frame (3,000) since June.

^Didn't even realize it charted there. The label made the audio such a non-event release (not that it did much better with the video, but at least it charted OK).

MILIION SELLERS CLUBMumford & Son's Sigh No More has crossed the 3 million scanned mark. (blurb above) Phillip Phillip's The World From the Side of the Moon has crossed the 1 million scanned mark: www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5740618/phillip-phillips-american-idols-latest-million-sellerPhillip Phillips: 'American Idol's' Latest Million-Seller By Keith Caulfield | September 28, 2013 11:28 AM EDT This week, Fox TV's "American Idol" series yields back-to-back million-selling debut albums from its winners for the first time since 2008. 2012 champ Phillip Phillips sold another 4,000 copies of his debut set "The World From the Side of the Moon" this past week, bringing its total sales to 1.004 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's No. 87 on the Billboard 200 this week, after 44 weeks on the chart. (Phillips was named the 11th-season winner of "American Idol" on May 23, 2012.) Phillips followed 2011 winner Scotty McCreery, whose first album, "Clear As Day," reached 1 million in sales in April of 2012, following its October 2011 release. It has sold 1.2 million to date. The last two seasons of "American Idol" to generate consecutive million-selling albums from its winners was its 2007 and 2008 editions. Jordin Sparks and David Cook, respectively, took home the "American Idol" crown those years. Sparks' self-titled debut, which was released in November of 2007, reached 1 million in January of 2009. Cook's self-titled debut reached retail in November of 2008, and surpassed 1 million in March of the following year. The only "American Idol" winners that have not shifted a million with their first post-show album (or any album), are Taylor Hicks, Kris Allen and Lee DeWyze. The three gents won the 2006, 2009 and 2010 editions of "American Idol," respectively. (As an aside, the biggest-selling "American Idol"-related album -- debut or otherwise -- is 2005 winner Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" debut: 7.3 million.) As for 2013's "American Idol" winner, Candice Glover, her debut album "Music Speaks" is due out Oct. 8 on Interscope Records.
