Did Gretchen Wilson sounding a lot like Natalie Maines cause her to become as successful as the Dixie Chicks once were?
Did Julie Roberts' name looking like that of a movie stars and her story reminding people of Faith Hill contribute to her successful debut?
I believe that less successful new artists who do not sound like or look like an established star have been cast aside because there original in sound and look. This mostly applies to the other new solo female artists.
Even Sugarland's lead singer has been said to sound like Patty Loveless, Sara Evans and Martina McBride. There successful, too.
It's driving me crazy that you have to sound or look like someone to make it or even have the chance to make it.

I don't think Gretchen sounds anything like Natalie Maines.
And you've also hear me say time and again that Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland's lead singer) sounds NOTHING like ANYONE else....I don't see where people get that she sounds like Sara when she doesn't even come close.

Yeah, the Sugarland girl sure as heck dosen't sound like any of those wonderfully talented girls. She has a sound all of her own. ;) ;)

When I heard Redneck Woman for the very first time, I thought a tiny part of the vocals sounded sort of like Maines, but looking back on it now, I don't see the resemblence anymore.
I agree that Sugarland's lead singer doesn't sound like anyone else.

When I first heard Gretchen I immediately thought of Natalie Maines. But then occasionally (**for about a note or two or three) I hear a little Natalie Maines in Miranda Lambert too. I don't think that's a bad thing. Natalie Maines has a great tone and a great style.
Gretchen didn't make it because she sounded similar to Natalie Maines.....she made it because she has a great voice and great songs that were totally different than what other chicks were doing. They're not THAT similar.
