I just read that Sugarland's debut has just been certified gold. Can't wait until it goes platinum.
Congrats to Sugarland and may their journey continue and get bigger and better.

As of 5/1 (the latest info I have available) Soundscan says the CD had sold 256,656, and was selling at just under 20,000 per week.

This seems to be a classic case of shipping cds to get a certification and generate press.
Sugarland is a new act. Mercury seems determined[/B] to turn them into huge stars.
Though is must be mentioned that Sugarland has been much more successful in terms of industry support, public support, and support from country radio than Mercury's last venture, Julie Roberts.
Putting my personal feelings about the lead singer's voice aside, I think Sugarland will give Rascal Flatts a run for their money in the Group category at the CMA awards in November.

Latest Soundscan for Sugarland...
WEEKS ON:28
COUNTRY RANK: 2W: 5 LW: 7 TW: 6
SALES LW: 19,688 TW: 25,398 (up 29%)
TOTAL: 282,054
Very hefty increase in sales this week, no doubt helped along by the VERY heavy pushing of the new single by major market stations like WUSN and KZLA.

Billboard magazine itself acknowledged (in a recent reply to a fan's email inquiry) that both Come On Over and The Woman In Me were greatly overshipped by Mercury, and overcertified by the RIAA. And I bet anything that it also has to do with generating press and creating buzz ("Wow, COO just reached 20 times platinum") Note how the 20 times platinum for COO came conveniently during the time she was releasing the GH. Note how the UP cd was only certiified by the RIAA after it had shipped 5 million, while the GH was certified as soon as it did 2-3. (a Since UP would be counted as two units each, it would look better to have a ten next to the certification on BIllboard, which would feed the self-generated hype. Nice way of creating buzz just in time to get those nice little captions "The third album in a row to sell 10 million copies, yada yada

Shania isn't the topic of this thread. SUGARLAND is. "NY" has officially returned.

Sugarland is the topic of a positive thread created to praise them, and yet you turned it into a negative one, by implying...nah, STATING that their label must be overshipping their albums in order to generate buzz. ("This seems to be a classic case of shipping cds to get a certification and generate press.") Ironic, coming from a fan of a woman whose albums have been proved to be overshipped and overcertified. If Shania's ceiling is made of glass, you shouldn't throw stones at their neighbors... ;)

Although I am not surprised with Nashville celebrating Sugarland's "Gold" cert....Nashville seem to be more impressed with an album hitting Gold then Platinum or....I dunno.....Diamond! But anyway, congrats to them.

Especially if two of those diamonds are obtained by : 1- Overshipping and overcertifying (COO's 20 mil figure versus the actual 16 million sold) 2- UP's "ghost" diamond (the album actually SHIPPED 5.5 million versus the actual 5.1 sold and the "11 million" certification) Maybe if the Diamond was obtained the old-fashioned way (how TWIM did it) , by actually SELLING 10 million copies, it would be an impressive feat. ;)

I suppose Pink Floyd-The Wall, Billy Joel-Greatest Hits, The Beatles-White Album, Garth Brooks-Double Live etc. are also "ghost Diamond" albums then, huh? 3- ....your username looks awfully familiar...

I suppose Pink Floyd-The Wall, Billy Joel-Greatest Hits, The Beatles-White Album, Garth Brooks-Double Live etc. are also "ghost Diamond" albums then, huh? Care to name your source for this alleged 3 million in club sales? And how many of those ALLEGED 3 million are paid for and how many are giveaways(as part of music clubs' usual get-7-cds-for-the-price-of one and such?) And those alleged 3 million still leave 1 million left...why would she still have the album certified at 20 if she sold 16, and allegedly moved 3 through Music Clubs?) Shania fans always grasp at straws. The reality that BILLBOARD itself corroborated was that Shania's last two big-selling albums were grossly overcertified. And it's a manipulation that Shania knows about. She can't be THAT clueless. And all those double albums u mentioned comprise of two discs with different selections on each disc, while Shania had the same 19 songs, the same 19 set of vocals "dressed" with different arrangements. (How laughable that she actually thought people would believe that she recorded each song twice... ) That's a truly "ghost diamond"...

I started this to be a POSITIVE thread about SUGARLAND. Can one of the admins please delete the bullshit posts in this thread? I would greatly appreciate it.

It's not just that one person though. If it were, the other ones would keep their damn mouths shut.

Honestly, I'm glad that this topic was inadvertantly covered. If overcertification does occur it's not the fault of the artists. And may I just say that I like both Sugerland and the old Shania. I think it's a healthy for fans to understand the marketing ploys of the record labels. These crazy measures make it extremely difficult for new artists to break because radio and media focus on these publicity stunts.....and so we get to hear the same 20 songs over and over again daily. If we all acknowledge that overcertification occurs.....maybe it will lose its effect and stop....and we can focus on the merits of the MUSIC! Can't we all just get along?!?!

Good optimism, and you will learn that the members here believe that more should be fixed, however radio won't change, the labels won't stop, and it will go on until they realize they are shooting themselves in the foot. Sad, but true.
